Graham and Kris are drinking awkwardly at a booth. They both sip the drink before them and occasionally stop to look around the room. They have been avoiding eye contact for the entire time here. Marian is supposed to arrive to save Kris. Kris pulls out her phone to check the time. It's later than Marian said she would be. Kris looks awkwardly towards Graham again. They make eye contact for a moment, and then Kris looks off around the bar again. A few minutes later, Marian strolls in. She sees Kris and starts walking in her direction. Kris notices Marian and gets excited. She stands up and jumps towards her, "Hey, Marian. I am so glad you came."
Then she looks at Grahm and says, "I hope you don't mind that I asked someone else to join us?" Graham starts laughing and says, "We had the same idea." He looks at his phone, and Robin notices that Robin should arrive any minute. A few moments later, Robin also walks into the bar. He searches for Graham and then gets more awkward when he realizes Kris and Marian are here. He walks towards the group. Marian makes eye contact with Robin and smiles at him. She immediately notices that both Graham and Kris must have called for backup. Graham immediately starts towards his friend and says, "Robin!" while tapping him on the back. Robin shrugs off this attempt at physical contact.
Robin sees Marian and asks Graham, "If Marian is here, do I need to stay?" Graham nods his head yes. Robin shakes his head no. Graham grabs Robin's shoulders and says, "Besides, I need to buy you housewarming drinks. Or apartment warming." Graham smiles at Robin. Robin is considering his options. It's not often that Graham offers to pay when they go out. Marian walks up behind Robin, pats his back, and clarifies, "Technically, Robin didn't move into a new place. Just Aurora." Kris, who was mid-drink, choked on her drink, "Oh my gosh! You guys are moving in together?!" She looks at Robin with wide eyes.
He pushes back his hair and says, "Yes. And I would much rather spend tonight with her." He looks around the bar. It is not a bar he would normally visit. Graham picked it out. It was a typical sports bar with giant screens with games on them. Graham, who is still feeling nervous, looks at Robin and pleadingly says, "Only one beer. Then you are free to go home." Robin takes a moment to weigh the choices in his mind. Graham asked him to come, so it wouldn't be just Kris and Graham, but that is not the case with Marian here. He and Aurora just moved in together, and Aurora still has many boxes to unpack. But it has been a while since he went out with Marian and Graham, so he does want to spend time with them. He will go home after one beer to help Aurora. He sits next to Graham at the bar, "fine."
Graham and Robin sit next to each other on one side of the table, and Marian and Kris are on the other. The two women look at each other and Marian smirks. She knew Kris would not normally put herself in this type of situation. Kris likes to stay home on the weekends. Marian looks from Graham to Robin and back to Kris. Maybe this is the perfect way to get Kris more comfortable with going out with others. Kris finally looks at the group and says, "Alright. Well, I guess I am buying the first round for everyone. I owe Graham, and he owes Robin. And Marian came to hang out with me, so I will get you a drink too. I hope everyone is okay with whatever is on tap?" Robin nods, Graham gives a little, "yep," and Marian smiles and nods. Kris takes off to the bar. With her friend out of range, Marian looks at Graham and says playfully, "Not that I am judging Graham, but how did this weird arrangement happen?"
Graham sits back and puts his hands up to his face in a thinking pose. He reflects for a minute and then remembers, "I don't know. I bought her dinner the other night when we had to work late, and she thinks she needs to pay me back. I didn't buy her dinner because I expected something from her. I just felt bad that I had made fun of her." Marian starts nodding. It's all falling into place. She says, "Classic Kris. She hates feeling indebted to someone."
Graham looks around the bar. He normally goes out on the prowl most weekends. He takes in the place to see if any other tables have someone attractive there. He says, "I don't know what I am doing here. I didn't want to make things more awkward between us." Marian asks him, "Are you interested in anything more with Kris?" Graham instantly shakes his head, "No! She's my supervisor. I don't want to make it weird at work. Maybe I should look to see if anyone interesting is here. I am going to take a lap." At this, Graham gets up and walks around the bar perimeter.
As he gets up and walks away, Kris returns. She is watching him. He is wearing a shirt that shows off his muscles. Kris is staring before she catches herself and returns her gaze to the table with Marian and Robin. She smiles and puts some tall glasses of beer in front of each person. Robin is taking a drink when Kris suddenly says, "Graham is kinda hot." Robin chokes on his beer. His eyes widen, and he looks over at his friend for a moment. He has never seen Graham as that attractive. Probably because the two friends are always bickering. Robin has also never seen Graham date anyone seriously. He looks back at Kris, who is watching Graham walk around the place with a smile on her face.
Marian looks at Kris and says, "I hope that is your second beer talking." Kris clarifies, "It's my third. But I just noticed he is kinda hot." Robin looks at Graham again and says, "If you are into guys who spend lots of time at the gym." Kris comes to Graham's defense, "Hey, he isn't dumb though." Robin looks at her, "Oh, I would never say Graham is dumb." Kris looks at Robin and Marian again and says, "Has everyone but me known that Graham is super smart?"
Marian weighs in, "I always saw him as a bro." Robin's head tips to the side, "What does that mean?" Marian explained further to him, "You know, a bro. Someone who likes to spend all their time at the gym. Someone who is only concerned with how they look." Robin takes this in and says, "He does spend his time at the gym. But he is also incredibly smart. I met him when I took an advanced math class in college. He ended up being in my group for a project. Usually, I was the one who carried the group, but in that class it was Graham."
Marian looks like she won the lottery. She knocks her hand on the table excitedly and says, "I forgot that you and Graham went to college together! He probably has some great stories about a younger Robin." Marian takes a drink. Robin sits in silence for a while. Kris asks, "Were you guys super close in college?" Robin takes another drink before he answers. "Yeah. He is why I got a job at Blahco. He called in a favor to Jace to get me an interview. I had just left my other job and was stressing about job hunting." Kris is desperate for more information, "What kind of favor? I have always been curious because you got hired without having to go through me."
Robin explains, "I don't know. After listening to me freak out about being unemployed, Graham started talking about how much he loved his job. The next week, I got an email from Jace to specifically apply for a job that had been created just for me." Kris takes all of this story in. She knew that Robin and Graham had been friends, but this story was all new information for her. She looks back at Graham and watches him again, "That was so nice of him. I didn't know he was like that. And this explains why I never saw a resume for you."
Marian is also curious about this story, "Graham made that happen? Who knew he had that type of initiative?" Robin nods his head. Yup. When Graham got the job for Robin at Blahco was the moment that Graham became Robin's best friend. Robin had never had anyone else look out for him like that before. He honestly didn't know people like Graham were out there. The three of them are waiting for Graham to return. He is getting closer to the table as the conversation about him concludes.
Graham arrives back at the table without anyone else. He sits down and can sense that they have been talking about him. He could feel it. He looks at Robin, Marian, and Kris and then asks, "What have you been talking about?" Marian smirks, "You." Graham nods knowingly, "Well, that can't be good." Robin chuckles. He pats Graham on the shoulder. He normally doesn't do something like that, but after remembering what a good friend he has been, Robin felt like Graham had earned it. Robin then comforts Graham by sharing, "I was just talking about when we met in college."
Graham winces and says, "Hopefully you didn't give away my college nickname." Robin starts laughing instantly, and Marian's curiosity rises. This sounds like an even better story about Graham. She leans in a little and says, "Now I am curious." Graham looks at Robin as if he will murder him if he says anything. Robin quickly tells Marian, "I can't tell you that. Only Graham should tell that story." Robin then finishes the last sip of his beer. He stands up, looks at everyone, and says, "Alright, that was my one beer. I have met my required limit. I am going to head home to Aurora." Graham looks at Robin and says very nicely, "Are you sure? You are already out late. Might as well stay out and enjoy it more." Robin changes his mind and sits back down. He says, "Alright, fine. You convinced me."
