Two hours later, Kommandeur Janz finally left the control room. Survival wasn't just about him anymore; he had 800 people to care for. Food, water, power. Without them, chaos was a thin wall away.
As he walked through the corridors, he saw people moving back and forth, carrying ration units. He followed, until he reached the military dining hall. Inside long tables were serving army portions. Among those handing out meals, was Erdmann Warner.
Janz approached him. "Representative."
"Kommandeur."
"How did you set it up so quickly?"
"I didn't." Erdmann replied. "But I do have some useful information if you'd like to listen."
"I would."
"First, what would you like to eat?"
"Steak. Medium rare."
"Unfortunately we don't have that. May I recommend today's special, Beef and Gravy."
"That would be perfect."
As they sat at the table, Erdmann began, "After the attack, some kids raided the storage units—mostly for drinks. The Zieglers took over, and set up distribution. The Clines and Baumanns did the same for their people. Every major family seems to have come prepared."
"That's... Convenient. We'll need to speak with them." Janz said. "Did you get any information about the kids who did this?"
Erdmann replied, "Not really. The cameras might've picked something."
"Most of them aren't working." Egon said. "We need to go now," Egon stood up. Erdmann followed.
"Where are we going?" Erdmann asked.
"To the Ziegler family. You'll guide me to them."
They met Katharine Ziegler, the head of her family. After a brief meeting, it was agreed; the Ziegler family would continue handling food and distribution, but under oversight. A rations department would be formed to monitor portion control ensure that resources were used wisely.
Finding someone to lead was harder. It needed to be someone they could trust who was capable of managing such a structure. Many refused, but one accepted: Anneli Dieter, a friend of Erdmann's. She accepted on the condition that she could decorate her office as she liked. They handed her a digital inventory and left her to form a team.
Water was next. The station ran without any errors. Erdmann proposed an idea; engineering scarcity to help maintain order. He suggested limiting the output to match only the basic needs of the 800 living there. They got Herta Wolter, the only one with the needed experience in water engineering or whatever its called.
Herta implemented their request, reducing the water system's output to 5%. They cut water supply to gyms and shower outlets to manage the reduced supply. Also, she noted another fault in the system; its maximum functional capacity was only 85%.
Energy was not a concern. The building had solar panels and eight nuclear generators. Still, they locked non essential areas—labs, gyms, research bays— to keep usage lean.
The last step was to tell the people. Erdmann had gotten filming equipment from aspiring actresses who had hopes to make it in the porn industry. They headed to the control room as Erdmann wrote the announcement. They set up the equipment, Egon prepared himself, and the broadcast began.
Egon's voice spread across the shelter:
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, residents of this shelter. It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of our current predicament. This shelter is now our home, likely for the year ahead. Until we understand the danger outside, our primary focus will be surviving inside the wall.
Departments have been established to manage essentials. The Rations Department will oversee food distribution and The Water Department will safeguard our supply. However, due to unavoidable technical issues, certain amenities such as hot showers, saunas, and gyms will be unavailable.
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Erdmann Warner for his tireless work That enabled us to set up these systems within a single day.
Lastly, I ask for your assistance in guiding our community towards a safer and more secure future. Your patience and cooperation will see us through. Together, we will endure."
