The next few days I spent alone, undisturbed, in my room. It was peaceful for the most part, until one evening when I had been trying to decide on my next course of action.

I was scribbling down thoughts and plans to escape for hours. The light of the candle had almost completely burned out and my back was beginning to hurt.

I set down the quill and stretched– covering my mouth on a yawn.

Suddenly, a bright light flickered in the center of the room. I glanced over wondering what was going on. The light grew brighter giving off the sensation of warmth. What is going on exactly?

The light exploded and in its place was a small looking creature. Its hair was a dark blue, and its eyes were the deepest green I had ever seen. What threw me though was not that fact that some floating creature appeared in existence– it was that its ears were twisted to a point and wings that looked like they were made of molten glass flickered quickly.

"Hmm." The creature mused, flying forward– stopping inches from my face. "Hmm. I thought I smelled something odd."

"Excuse me." I jolted back. "Who– no what– are you?"

"That's my question." It tasked, shifting back and crossing its arms. "I was minding my own business just doing what sprites do– and suddenly– BAM!" The sprite smacked its chest– widening its eyes. "I felt something strange."

"How is that my problem?" I asked, rubbing my eyes. I don't remember sprites being in the story either. Something is very wrong with this world.

I could have been remembering wrong– but I know the book. Sure it was mostly focusing on romance, but the female lead never encountered sprites or any other type of magical creatures. The only thing she ran into was an ancient key way later in the story.

"It's your problem 'cause you don't belong here." It pointed a finger at me. "How did you get into this world and who are you?"

"Why does it matter?" I sighed, standing. "I don't know how I'm here and I don't feel like being harassed by a weird little creature."

"How dare you." The sprite snapped. "I am the all-mighty sprite of the fields. If you were from here you would be falling over yourself in awe."

"Well, as you said, I'm not from here." I walked over to the bed, pulling down the blanket. "I'm tired– see yourself out."

"Hold on!" The Sprite flew over as I sat. "Don't you want to know why I came to you?"

"Wasn't it to question my existence?" I asked, unimpressed. What type of game is this thing playing at? It was already hard enough being stuck in this world, being locked in my room, and having to not lose my mind over the knowledge I already had.

"Of course not." It huffed. "I came to offer you a contract."

"Why?"

"Why?" The Sprite laughed. "Because I can. Image it," He spread his arms out. "You'll have the power of me backing you up. I can protect you from danger."

"I still don't understand why you'd offer to help me." I shrugged. "You showed up out of nowhere, started asking me questions, and now you want to form a contract? Sounds suspicious to me. I don't have any desire to be scammed."

"It's not a scam." He huffed, sitting mid air. "Look, I've been alive for a very long time. I've seen everything this world has to offer. However, I have never met someone who's soul is not from here."

"I'm still not interested." I laid down, turning my back toward him. "Go find someone else to bother."

"Listen lady," The Sprite flew over– landing on the bed before my face. "Your soul is unstable right now and anyone with half a brain will know that you're easy prey. Just let good old Sayvren help you."

"I don't want–" I broke off when an idea occurred to me. If this little creature is actually offering help, I could use him to escape. I pushed off the bed and looked down at him. "If I accept your contract, does that mean you'll do anything in your power to aid me?"

"Didn't I just say that?" Sayvren asked, tilting his head. "Once we're bound together– I'll be able to help you with my power."

I didn't say anything for a few minutes as I rolled around the ideas in my mind. Accepting an unknown factor could either help or hinder me. Since sprites weren't mentioned at all in the story, I had no idea what to expect.

Despite that fact, I already knew the hell that awaited me in the near future. It would be hard enough to handle what's to come on my own, but with the help of Sayvren, I might have an easier time to avoid the plot and get out of this place.

Either way, I don't really have much choice. I thought, recalling when I tried to leave yesterday. Guards had showed up moments after I attempted to climb out the window. They returned me to my room, locked the door, and put a magical barrier on the glass so it could no longer be opened.

"Okay." I said at last, sighing. "I accept your contract."

"Great!" Sayvren shot into the air, clapping his hands. "I, Sayvren Opoto The Sage of the Field willingly bind myself to–" He broke off suddenly. "What's your name?"

"Kyla Thornevale."

"I willingly blind myself to Kyla Thornevale of House Thornevale." Sayvren's body began to glow and he held out his palm. "Repeat it, human."

"I, Kyla Thornevale the youngest daughter of House Thornevale, willingly bind myself to Sayvren Opoto The Sage of the Field." I held out a finger and gingerly touched Sayvren's palm.

The light that surrounded him– washed over me. I gasped as my senses opened up and I could feel each breath being taken inside the mansion, each whisper that filled the air, and each brush of fabric as people moved about.

Suddenly, the sensation vanished when Sayvren pulled back– a smirk on his face. "We're bound." He pointed at the back of my hand.

I looked down to see a small elaborate symbol that looked similar to a leaf on my skin. It glowed faintly before disappearing entirely.

"Well, I gotta go take care of some things." Sayvren waved. "If you need me just touch the brand and call me."

I didn't get a chance to answer– Sayvren disappeared as quickly as he had arrived.

I guess…I'm bound now. I thought, sitting back on the bed.

I didn't know what that meant entirely, but I knew one simple fact:

Sayvren was either going to be an obstacle in my path or my way to salvation.
