Waking up was slow, confusing, and painful. The fire had gone out in the night and luckily I hadn’t burned to death wrapped in oil treated canvas; gotta take note of the good.

“Ah yes, a return to form… hangovers without drinking, efficient.”

This time along with the headache, I felt feverish and sick to my stomach; the menu helpfully gave me an explanation along with a throbbing wave of pain from that damn alert sound in my ears.

I’ll admit my confidence deflated a bit after reading that. I dismissed the alert and buried my face in my hands hoping the pain would go back down; as I did a dreadful realization came upon me.

“... charcoal, those home made filters are supposed to have charcoal in them.”

I groaned feeling disappointed in myself.

Yeah, I’ve got a history of forgetting small but important details apparently. I dragged myself off the stone floor and did a double take when I caught sight of a sprig of moonlight mint growing through some of the cracks in the tile.

"Moonlight mint is a lightly mana charged variant species of mint; good for treating mild to moderate stomach upsets, freshening breath, brewing invigorating and focus enhancing teas, seasoning meat with a strong gamy flavor, and for use as a weak antimicrobia-"

For a moment I considered the plant, or more accurately the string of information I was rattling off about it; it didn’t look like any mint I’d ever seen before, but then… how did I know about it?

“Wait…”

I looked closer at the plant and got this:

[Moonlight Mint]

Rarity: Common
Quality:
C-
Medicinal Uses:
Treatment of nausea, indigestion, mild allergies, halitosis, rash and inflammation; mild analgesic effects
Magical Uses: A common ingredient in cheaper restorative potions for Health, Stamina, and Mana as well as potions that dispel a number of common magical diseases.
Description: Moonlight mint is a hardy, mildly mana charged species of mint that grows best in areas charged with magic and exposed to moonlight. Different medicinal properties are heightened in the foliage depending on which phase of the moon the leaves are sprouted under; information easily discerned by the shape of the small white speckles that run down the midrib of the leaf matching the phase in question.
Other Names Include: Moonmint, Peasant's Balm, Sweetbreath, Pennytea

“Holy shit, this is that herbalism skill!”

I jumped up from my spot on the floor in excitement and quickly regretted the sudden movement; then yelped gripping my stomach and falling back into a sitting position on the pew.

“Yep, its going to be a rough day.”

My eyes locked onto the little plant that until now I had thought of as a weed.

“Or… maybe not.”

I had new knowledge now, paid for in pain, and I was going to use it. Bending over to pluck the leaves was rough and I nearly lost my nonexistent breakfast in the process.

Another tidbit of useful info I learned this morning: the magic bag’s ranged collection doesn’t work on parts of living things unless separated from the whole. Guess that ruins my plan of just storing someone’s left arm off their body as an attack.

Damn, no exploit there… but hey, I’m sure I can find one; Anywhere things are decided with numbers, things can be exploited.”

Once I had a good handful of leaves, I stuffed them into my mouth and started chewing, and ‘et me tell you, this shit is better than pepto; within five minutes the cramps and headache were almost gone and I could move again. Bonus, they have a pretty nice flavor too.

“Hm, refreshing.”

After confirming I wasn’t going to be dry heaving, I planned the rest of the day with one goal in mind: fixing my mistake; this time I’d make sure I properly filtered and boiled the next batch of water.

I learned a bit more about my herbalism skill when stepped outside, my headache came back with a vengeance as my vision filled with too many of those little windows to read, each was addressing the potential practical uses of every plant within my cone of vision. I had a hard time focusing but eventually got the menu to bring up what I was hoping for.

Hurray.”

Even after that sensory nightmare was resolved, It was slow going; as it turns out a bundle of those mint leaves can only be chewed for about an hour before turning into an inert bitter paste and I had to gather more as I went.

The most challenging part of that was finding more of the mint that was ready for harvest; the skill, manifesting as information I don’t remember learning, told me that if the leaves I plucked were too young or too old the differences in something called ‘mana concentration’ would ‘reduce the effectiveness of the desired medicinal properties’.

With the extra step. it took twice as long to go back down to the beach this time, but I had to collect more sand and gravel to remake my filter correctly.

Luckily, the charcoal was easy enough to find in the remnants of last night’s fire, and within a few hours I’d fumbled through properly constructing another towering stack of glassware.

For as long as rigging up the new filter took, I spent even more time trying to figure out a rig for boiling it in a flask over the fire without the glass giving out from uneven uncontrolled heat; no bunsen burner in that alchemy kit and setting the glass directly in the coals was out of the question.

In the end, my solution was as simple as it was inelegant, but it worked; I suspended the bottle using the broken end of a pew and chunk of masonry from one of the nearby ruined houses.

By the time the sun went down I was exhausted, but I had a flask of moonlight mint tea to settle my stomach enough to sleep; I didn’t do much else and settling in for the night was like a mirror image of yesterday, but with a lot more introspection.

“It’s not like there’s a clinic I can visit the next time I get hurt or sick.”

Not that I could afford it back home anyway, I was on my own if I got sick there too… so not much has changed.

“I got lazy and I got lucky; if it had been anything else in that water, I’d probably be dead. I need to pay more attention.”

If there’s any good news really, it’s that I wasn’t hungry today; not that a lack of appetite is a good thing medically, just… I guess it’s another day of jerky before I’m down to hard tack alone. I should save the jerky for last.

With that conclusion out of the way, I settled in for a night’s sleep.

I got another little menu prompt about when I closed my eyes.

A well rested mind and body are key to success, you have both. 09:43:26

“Okay… good, infection is gone. Surprising, but good.”

"I wonder why I recovered so quickly... I guess it's possible the tea helped, or maybe this church is holy ground? I remember in a lot of games sleeping in a church put you back to 100% right away."

"... could be the disease resistance."

After I finished that status check I felt hungry and decided to reserve the last of the jerky; I’ve had a long love affair with cured and dried meats so I couldn’t bear the thought of being completely out of it.

My mind wandered for a minute before I ate, and I stared up at the ruined fresco on the ceiling of the church, the form of the goddess only barely visible. My thoughts ranged from deep enough to drown in to shallower than a kiddy pool and I settled on one of the lighter ones to voice so I wouldn’t get bogged down.

“Sleeping naked on bare wood was a bad idea… I think I have a splinter in my ass.”

Thankfully, I didn’t. I got dressed and prepared myself mentally for the great challenge the day had laid out before me: hardtack.

I discovered that the hardtack was more palatable than I’d expected, it seems like it was flavored with pork or whatever equivalent this world had; it wasn’t all that good though, I still had to soak it in water to make it soft enough to eat without losing a tooth.

“Okay, that’s not as terrible as I expected, but I’d like to eat food that isn’t made with longevity as a priority over taste at some point in the near future.”

“Now… what to do today...”

Running around the wilds randomly seems like a bad idea, and I’m not keen on swimming back across the lake, even if I know that I can; there are probably more goblins over there and I’m guessing they wouldn’t be too happy to see me.

“Oh right, skills and abilities; I should give some of those a try.”

I was too miserable yesterday to bother much with the menu, but just one had been enough to keep me from being helpless; I need to see what they do, at least the ones that aren’t self explanatory.

I pulled up the lists and mentally noted which ones were most relevant.

I started with the more ‘indoors’ options; alchemical analysis, basic compounding, camouflage, dynamic planning, iron lungs, multitasking, and refine potion. Everything else was either not something I wanted to test indoors, or not something I wanted to test at all.

Alchemical analysis was easy enough, though it did take me a bit to figure out. At first, I just stared at one of my mana potions until I got bored.

“Nothing…”

Then I really started to look at it, it was slate blue and murky, slightly syrupy as well; clinging to the sides of the bottle when I turned it, but it had a faint glow and fizzed a bit when jostled. The little flecks of what I assumed to be some herbs danced past my vision, carried on fine bubbles, and I felt like I was on the edge of a discovery.

On a lark, I uncorked it, sniffed it, and took a little taste. The smell was a good indicator of the flavor, but not good enough for me to expect what I got.

“Eugh, shit, that’s worse than I thought”

I nearly retched; it was bitter, sour, and sickly sweet all at the same time; like rotten fruit. Before I could complain much more, I got what I was looking for.

[Pathetic Mana Potion]

Rarity: Common

Yes!

I fist pumped in triumph and tested the other two in the same way and got similar results:

[Pathetic Healing Potion]

Rarity: Common
Quality:
D-
Type: Potion
Effect: Restore 150 HP over 30 seconds (5/second for 30 Seconds)

Description: An impure admixture, this potion restores a relatively minuscule amount of health over a short time. Prone to causing side effects including but not limited to: Flu Like Symptoms, Violent Nausea, Addictive Dependence, and Cancer
Usage Directions: Shake well and drink or apply directly to damaged area; avoid consuming more than one in a 72 hour period or mixing with other potions. Ignoring directions or excessive use of low grade Healing Potions may result in a greater incidence of side effects and/or more extreme side effects.

[Pathetic Stamina Potion]

Rarity: Common
Quality:
F+
Type: Potion

Effect: Restore 240 ST over 30 seconds (8/second for 30 Seconds)

Description: An impure admixture, this potion restores a relatively minuscule amount of stamina over a short time. Prone to causing side effects including but not limited to: Flu Like Symptoms, Violent Nausea, Chronic Fatigue, Addictive Dependence, and Glandular Dysfunctions such as Hypothyroidism

After the high of success wore off, I nearly dropped the bottle I was holding; realizing just how fucking dangerous these things are absolutely stunned me.

"What the shit!? Insanity? Cancer!? Thyroid Disease!?, I drank one of those!"

I guess it's par for the course, you don't get something from nothing; rapid regeneration probably increases the chances of errors in cell division. The mixing thing makes sense too I suppose, drug interactions all that. I suppose the only bit I'm really surprised about is the risk of addiction, but really I shouldn't be shocked.

"I'm going to have to think hard before I use a potion... I wonder if the interaction risk happens in the 72 hour window too."

I put that out of my mind and on a lark, tried out the same thing with the tea I’d made last night and got back some food for thought.

In the process, I remembered that beverages made from boiling things other than actual tea are called ‘tisanes’, and promptly called myself a hipster mentally.

More pertinently, after that thought came this:

[Moonlight Mint Tisane - Waxing Crescent]

Rarity: Ubiquitous
Quality:
B+
Type: Infusion

Effect: Mitigates the effects of nausea, cramps, and other upsets of the stomach
Description: A well brewed calming beverage that is a favorite amongst both high and low born individuals, often served after large heavy meals or between heavy courses to cleanse the palette; this tisane sits on the thin line between food and medicine being pleasant to taste and acting as an aid to digestion. Side effects are rare and almost unheard of, the active ingredients are so dilute that more than three gallons would have to be consumed to risk negative effect and at that point water intoxication is a greater concern.
Usage Directions: Drink hot or cold, try with some lemon and honey for a flavor sensation.

“So… it’s an infusion and not a potion, I wonder what the difference is?”

After that, I actually felt pretty satisfied that I’d understood the skill, and as a bonus I’m pretty sure had already used basic compounding without realizing yesterday. I suppose I was pretty anal about how long the water had to cool before I added the mint leaves… maybe if I hadn’t followed my gut it wouldn’t have turned out as effective.

Next on the list then was camouflage, for this bit I just pulled out the little box of camo paint. Examining it closely revealed that there were actually three trays with differing shades, some in grey and white and others dipping through into reds and even blues and purples. That surprised me.

“What the fuck kinds of landscapes does this world have if I need all of this?”

Adding that to my pile of questions, now looking more like a mountain, I settled on a patch stone wall to try and emulate; just on one arm though, I don’t need to waste paint on a test. It was tough at first without any sort of applicator, I kept trying to make it perfect, but the skill just sort of took over somewhere in there.

“Whoa…”

Before my eyes, my arm became part of the wall; it wasn’t perfect, but the impressionistic smears of grey just made it difficult to pick out where it began and ended when held up against the stone… at least as long as I kept it still.

It was only after the fact that I realized, with mixed feelings on the matter, that the paint isn’t water soluble and I’d have to rub it off with dirt or grit; another motivation to go bathe properly at the lake shore, it’s been three days.

“Hah… if you think about it, I haven’t had a bath for my entire life!

I tried to enjoy the unique opportunity for comedy presented by my second chance existing, but mostly it just reminded me of how gross I felt with oil based pigments covering one arm and hair greasy enough to not need product.

Dynamic planning was sort of a crapshoot, either I’d been using it all along or not at all and I wasn’t sure how to tell; I’d have to see if something felt different when I was in an actual crisis.

“Moving on…”

I hit another stumbling block trying to figure out how to test iron lungs, but muddled through. The skill either came from breathing smoke or holding my breath while swimming… maybe both. I eventually just settled on counting how many minutes I cold hold my breath using the timer on well rested; the answer: longer than I thought, but not as long as I’d hoped. I was gasping for breath after three minutes.

“guh, that’s… well, that’s not too bad. I guess skills don’t suddenly make me superhuman, and I could probably go longer if I had to.”

I remembered something about the world record being a crazy number like twenty minutes and change, and then wondered if I used to read wikipedia for fun or something.

“Well, thats everything except for multitasking and ‘refine potion’... shouldn’t that be called ‘potion refinement’?”

System Alert!

Skill [Refine Potion] renamed to [Potion Refinement]

►Confirm◄

“...”

“Well, that pretty much settles it; this system thing is based on perceptions and opinions.”

In the end I had no idea how to test multitasking in a way that empirically told me how effective it was and filed it away with dynamic planning for field testing before moving on.

I oped not to mess with refine potion; something told me I’d have to disassemble my water filter and the idea of having to rebuild it again wasn’t too attractive, besides risking wasting one of those potions seemed pretty stupid.

With that, I was pretty clear on most of those skills even if I wasn’t completely familiar with all of them.

I decided to try and give lunch a pass to preserve what I had and my stomach was starting to complain about the lack of food as I headed outside. No time to eat anyway, if I want to have food at all after another day or two, I need to try out some more combat oriented skills.

At first I was concerned about alerting a monster, but I figured that after a few days of tromping around being loud, I figured the ruined town was safe enough that I didn’t need to make much effort to stay quiet.

My mental list for the skills read something like this: blind toss, dagger, daring leap, evasive maneuvering, lesser endurance, potion sling, simple martial arts, sprinting, and swimming; everything else seemed too hard or inadvisable to try or quantify. I couldn’t exactly test swimming here in the old town square, I’d probably have to go down to the beach to test out some abilities anyway; some of them sound... destructive.

Putting away that thought, I began testing skills; I did end up going out of order, but some of them just seemed to flow into each other.

When I held the blade in my hand, it felt practiced; not necessarily completely natural, but my swings weren’t wild and random. I might’ve gotten a bit carried away; I found myself imagining phantom goblins as I swung the blade around, jabbing and swiping at vitals before turning and blindly whipping the knife at a tree.

I gawked at what I’d done, four inches of the metal were buried dead center in the knothole of a grand old oak.

“Oh my god, that felt so badass.”

It felt less badass having to take ten minutes to wrench the dagger out of the tree, it was stuck fast and I fell on my ass when it finally gave.

Daring leap was a might harder to try, but I was feeling confident so I decided to really give it a go. The old town was practically a natural obstacle course, so when I started sprinting around the place I found myself bobbing and weaving through half collapsed structures with what I assume was evasive maneuvering and jumping over heaps of rubble.

At first I was just making a circle around the old town square but eventually I broke the circuit and started imagining invisible pursuers and intangible arrows; my mind sank into the false picture of the world and my body fell into a rhythm of movement.

Knowledge and a kinetic memory I don’t remember developing took over.

Leap with confidence but not without observation, know where you’re going before your feet leave the ground. Duck to the left, dive and roll to disperse excess force, remember to tuck your limbs to avoid bruising and breaks when you do. Keep pace, don't lose your momentum.

Though I wasn’t conscious of it at the time, I had engaged multiple skills at once. I jumped between uneven footholds up a stone wall to avoid the hypothetical pursuers on my tail and then dove off it into a tight roll, avoiding an imagined projectile before springing back up into a run.

Pace yourself and keep your breaths even to keep from burning out; there are no obstacles, just opportunities.

Dashing through the maze of collapsed structures I ran up against a dead end and simply leapt at the wall and climbed; finding handholds and scrambling over with strength I didn’t know I had.

Circle back around and strike at their vitals, retreat before they can retaliate; be quick, be quiet, be efficient, be felt and not seen. Make them fear you.

I did just that, taking a side passage through a collapsed section of wall silently, I returned to that blind alley.

“[Rapid Engagement]!”

“[Cheap Shot]!”

The words came unbidden from my mouth, bound by unfamiliar phenomes on either side that I assume represent the brackets, but in my fugue I hadn’t noticed or considered it. The world blurred in my vision as I rushed forward across the uneven cobbles with precise and even footing footing; dagger drawn, I jabbed the blade into an invisible enemy’s throat from behind, wedging it's edge between two vertebra faster than my own eyes could follow. The phantom foe slumped to the ground.

Two left, use their fear, use your entire body, use anything you can. Remember, they want you dead.

“[Quick Stab]!”

“[Leg Sweep]!”

I spun on a dime, hips pivoting as I tossed the knife to my opposite hand; catching it in a reverse grip I stabbed the second imaginary foe in the heart as my leg swept the third from his feet, I barely even caught my voice crying out again and in the moment didn’t even notice the unfamiliar ability names. I rose from my crouch and felt the gears of my mind turning faster than ever as I assessed the situation.

One enemy left alive, don’t get careless. Get some space before he recovers and retaliates, attack at range.

“[Disengage]!”

The same rushing sensation came in reverse as a flew backwards skidding over the ground and threw the dagger at my final rising foe to finish the fight.

Throwing the weapon was a mistake, take a tight stance and check your flanks, confirm all targets down.

I glanced from side to side as if there might actually be something there, but the imagined enemies were dead… and back in the real world my dagger was buried in the mortar of the ancient wall behind where the goblin would’ve been.

I was left heaving for breath some 30 feet back, feeling a little dizzy from the experience.

I shook my head to clear the fog and walked back up to pull the dagger free, sheathing it safely before I did anything else After that, I simply slid down into a sitting position with my back supported by the uneven stony wall.

I was flabbergasted and a little scared, but ultimately my feelings on the situation could be summed up as follows.

“That… was… Awesome!

After I stopped expecting to see blood on my hands and my heart rate leveled off, I noticed a waiting alert.

I took an inventory of just what I’d used.

“Okay, so for skills… that had to be, sprinting, stealth, evasive maneuvering, uhh… daring leap, climbing (hell yeah, new skill), and dagger; maybe dynamic planning too?”

It was hard to take a measure of everything, so I assumed it was just the ones listed there, abilities were easier to track: I’d used rapid engagement, cheap shot, disengage, and those new ones; leg sweep and quick stab. I took some time to analyze what I could from memory.

“Rapid engagement seems to push me forward and it might also somehow keep me from tripping but I shouldn’t count on that.”

“Cheap shot seems like it’s just an automatic stab at vitals, but it might just find an opening, quick stab made my hand move faster than I ever imagined it could. I think I have a handle on those, but I need to be in a real fight to be certain.”

Even after my apparent display of martial prowess, that thought chilled my blood; I might be able move like a parkour runner and shadowbox, but actually stabbing something is probably another story.

“Disengage seems like it just does the reverse of rapid engagement… and leg sweep is pretty self evidently named; does what it says on the tin.”

I poked at the menu and confirmed something important, at least some of those abilities used stamina, but I wasn’t sure about the cost.

“So it looks like all of my stamina will be back in about 30 minutes, I’ll have to test how much each ability uses and give the others a try.”

My stomach complained even more loudly at the lack of food than it had at the start of this exercise and despite my attempts at discipline I acquiesced. Doing a bit of quick math looking at the counter for well rested, I determined it was a bit after noon.

“Alright, fine. After some food.”

Well, That was a bigass chapter!

Let me tell you, those potions scare the fuck right out me and I imagined them, I dunno if I'd be willing to drink one.

Somehow I managed to squeeze action in without any real action, I'll admit I'm not super experienced with writing fight scenes but that one feels satisfying to me at least!

We also got to see a bit of how skills and abilities work, of course we'll see more as amber does.

You might notice I switched to metric for my measures, I'm not actually from the UK and it doesn't come to me naturally but it is just a better system for exacting amounts. Conveniently, Amber will be switching to the metric system as well and no, you aren't getting an in story explanation.
