Maxine squinted in the dim light as she scraped moss with her fingernail into a piece of cloth torn from her outfit. The guards were fools, allowing a growth of Miner’s Grass in a prison full of alchemists. If she harvested it bit-by-bit, never taking so much as to slow its growth, in a few weeks she would have enough to, once it was combined with the hot sauce one of the kinder guards had had the grace to provide, burn a hole through her wall. Once that was done, the ethereal owl feather she had found just outside her window would be dissolved in a cup of lemonade, provided by the same kindhearted guard, forming a potion hopefully powerful enough to slow her fall to the point where she wouldn’t break any bones. From there it would be a matter of running.
One way or another, she would get her child back.
I read pretty much the entirety of this book (as it is so far) yesterday, and I cannot stop thinking about how well you made the gods and rampartian nobility mirror each other as horrible selfish bastards with too much power and how well that really ties up the story's themes on the whole.
Not to mention what a great job you do of mixing humor with intrigue, especially as it comes to showing the reader why all the characters have their quirks without detracting from how deeply weird they all are. All in all A-f*cking-plus, just a very good work holy shit.
Aww, thanks! That really makes my day!
Thank you It's a great tease. Take back Drake Maxine! And Burn ISA to the ground!
Well, the coming days have come and gone (for I got distracted around the tournament arc for a day or so, and then another couple days later), and it is now 3 AM. I have just finished Narcissist, Coward, Fool, and Traitor again. Riven continues to be best girl, and my friends continue to ignore my sage recommendations.
Whether or not you will continue this story in the future, I agree with my July 5th self's appraisal of the story: you have written something great here. Thank you.
it was tricky tracking this story down again, having forgotten the title, but i managed it. in the coming days i will very likely reread it in its entirety, but before i do, i figured i should ask: is the sequel still happening?
I would like to at some point. But to be honest, a huge blow to my confidence a couple of years ago has made it difficult to come back to this story, so I've been largely focusing on other projects.
@MsBlackandBlue ah, that's fair enough! i still think you wrote something great here.
This was a really good story, can’t wait to see what you do next.
