Narrator's POV
A demon.
With black mist covering the body, the demon's presence was intense. It gave off a dark and heavy aura and the atmosphere turned into a ghastly one.
The demon's eyes were bright red, its horns were so long and bizarre, and its wide mouth was unable to cover its sharp teeth. The demon's face was disfigured, and its limbs were stuck in weird places. It was unrecognizable to know what it was before, but its figure was standing on two legs and had four arms with bony claws protruding out of its hands and feet.
The demon's body was black as if it was burnt.
"Where did it come from?!" asked one of the nobles.
The whole scene was a chaotic mess. No one had expected a demon would pop out during this celebration. Scattered demons had been hiding for the past three years and now, one appeared in the palace.
How?
Fortunately, Sir Rowan was still on duty and was near the demon. So, before it got out of hand, Rowan unsheathed his sword and released his divine powers.
The sword glimmered with a white aura and Rowan lunged fast towards the demon. With the swing of his arm, Rowan slashed his sword but the demon dodged it.
The next second, red symbols floated in the air forming two rings that encircled the demon. Its four arms were waving wildly.
"It's a caster!" someone shouted.
Rowan quickly stepped back and materialized his powers into a barrier surrounding him.
People near the fight ran away with the help of the other knights. The nobles who had no divinity to withstand demons were shaking with fear, especially since no one could stop a demon spell once it was cast.
The demon roared and suddenly, there was a wide black beam with wisps of scarlet lightning rushing out from it and aimed at Rowan!
The black beam thundered, flashed, and whizzed through the air.
The red-haired knight went into a slight panic as he never thought that the demon caster belonged to the upper class. The attack felt so strong! With its figure, it was supposedly a lower grade one.
Another barrier surrounded Rowan and the others near him, completely different and superior.
Icarus had also cast a spell and the instant it was created, it collided with the demon's attack beam, making it disappear. Rowan felt a shockwave and stood his ground. So powerful!
Almost immediately, there was an arrow flying past and made the target. The demon was hit, and part of its shoulder melted as the arrow was made from divine powers.
"A critical hit, brother!" Jarl Amund shouted, seemingly excited with the sudden turn of events.
The demon was taken aback and avoided Jarl Amund's divine lance. It did not hesitate to cast another spell but before it did, the Duke of Redgrave appeared beside it!
The demon didn't notice him, and the spectators also could not help but marvel at the scene when Duke Redgrave moved.
The Duke's sword swung, and it chopped off the demon's other arm.
The demon cried out in anger and backed away, leaping. Duke Redgrave, Jarl Amund, and Rowan Griffith followed instantly and cooperated in their attacks with Jarl Runar at the back.
The demon, quite frustrated, roared loudly and used its powerful legs to create a large gap between it and its enemies.
The priest and clerics that were part of Icarus' procession went on and used their divinity for longer-range attacks. Small white orbs appeared on their staff and flew fast towards the demon.
The demon moved agilely and evaded but the remaining knights who were on duty surrounded it, leaving no room for escape. It made the dark creature growl.
The demon's blood-red eyes flickered, its gaze towards its enemies. As the demon felt it had no chance of winning, it cast another spell. This time the red symbols glowed brightly, completely enveloping the demon. The black mist grew intensely, enshrouding the area.
Rowan's heart beat fast as he shouted, "It's self-destructing!"
The demon let out another roar as it neared the end of its spell. This scene made other nobles cry out in fear.
And then...
"Regnier's Authority, incante de sellamento."
White symbols appeared and shined brightly. It gave off a strong sense of the divine and sailed through the air. It formed a golden chain that detained the demon. A second later, the demon's spell had finished, and it finally exploded.
However, no one was hurt.
Ashes fell into one place, red lightning lapsed, and the black mist gradually disappeared. The dark aura vanished into thin air. What remained was the faint mystical sense.
And the once chaotic hall went silent.

The Redgrave Duchess' POV
Seeing Ethan and Emilia were fine at the Summer Wing, I went back to the Royal Rex Hall.
After that scene, King Henry consoled the nobles and promised to find out why there was a demon that got into the Royal Rex Hall. I saw my father's exhausted face, pale and ashen. Wisps of white strands on his hair were visible.
King Henry was born with a little amount of divinity compared to others. Despite that, he showed excellent results in all other aspects and was finally chosen as the heir amongst his brothers. The royal family made no complaints.
But still, using the royal ring artifact Gormal required a huge amount of divine powers. Even one spell would put him into such a state.
Despite being tired, the King stood tall and gave orders to his subjects.
A demon during the twins' first birthday celebration, no less...
I stared at King Henry and felt that this event will certainly put more strain on our relationship.
Will he blame me? But it's not like I wanted this to happen.
The twins... My children had nothing to do with this matter.
Ethan was also fine earlier.
Lately, the curse has not flared up at all except at that time when I was tired with the birthday preparation. I was determined to rest and make my body healthy to help Ethan withhold his curse.
Was I too greedy to think that everything will be fine?
I glanced at my husband who stood beside the guests from the other kingdoms, talking about the current situation.
Oh, Edward, what do I do? How I wish I could tell you right now...
But as I remembered what my teacher told me two years ago, I put down the thought of telling my husband.
Almost two years ago, when I was pregnant with the twins, I found out that I was cursed. At first, I thought it was just pregnancy symptoms, but the pain was so intense while I was having nightmares about Lucifer - the Prince of Darkness.
Then, one day I saw red symbols covering my body - just like the one the demon had had earlier.
I was so terrified that I didn't know what to do. Edward was at the knights' training ground and if I went there, others would see me creating a scene.
And so, I went to the person I could always rely on since I was a child. My teacher - the royal tutor, Hayden Osborne. After the demons were defeated, he left the Royal Library and his abode turned into a quiet and humble home, filled with books.
Hayden Osborne was an expert at artifacts and relics and held a vast amount of knowledge about demons.
He told me I was cursed by a demon and most likely, the child within me was cursed too. I cried hard that day, begging my teacher to save me and my child.
"Lillian, one way to end this suffering is to abort the pregnancy so the chance of you surviving the curse is higher. The curse is eating away your divinity and likely converting it into demonic powers, " My teacher told me, and I cried even harder.
But my teacher continued, "We humans cannot control such demonic powers, and it would only drain you of your divinity. And little by little, your life would be at stake. Worst, you'll even become a demon."
I shook my head, and I could not help my tears from falling. I could not even mumble a few words.
"You would be able to hold on for a little longer since you could fight against it and already have divine powers, but the child had not developed it yet and would not survive."
I cried, "No! No..." I felt myself losing to my emotions, almost fainting.
"So instead of waiting for the worst to come, it's better to end it now."
But how could I ever do that? To kill my child with my own hands?
Or to let the curse do it? Sooner or later, it was the same...
Without any way to vent my frustrations, I lashed out at God, asking 'What did I do to deserve this? Why me? Why involve my innocent child?'
What do I tell Edward? I didn't even know how I got cursed?!
"How did I end up this way? For the past few months, there aren't any demons at all!" I shouted at my teacher as if he was the one who sinned against me.
Edward was the hero! A child of light! What would he think when a demon cursed his wife and child? The hero who led thousands of knights and even defeated Lucifer...
Lucifer...? I keep having nightmares about that demon...
Wait, was it Lucifer who cursed me? No... but... I never had gotten close to Lucifer himself.
Thinking about it, for the past few months, ever since we got married, I stayed around Edward. And then I was pregnant with his child.
I hesitated for a moment then spoke about my suspicions. I calmed down so I could speak.
"Before Edward and I got engaged, Edward spent a year at the Holy Empire," I muttered to my teacher.
"What do you mean?" my teacher asked, rather confused at my sudden state.
And so, I told him everything that happened.
After we won the war, Edward never got close to me nor talked to me - even though he promised to come for me if he ever made it out alive. But suddenly, he went to the Holy Empire with the Grand Priest.
What happened?
I waited and waited. Almost seven months had passed when Edward went and stayed at the Holy Empire without talking to me or sending me any letters.
What went wrong? I asked myself every day.
I miss him.
One day, a letter came from the Holy Empire. It was from Edward, but it wasn't for me.
It was made for King Henry's eyes.
I saw the King's expression change from happiness to an indescribable one. That look on my father's face showed that he was thinking deeply and was considering his choices.
The next moment, before I could ask him what was wrong, he hurriedly went to his study.
I never knew what was on that letter. And every time I ask my father about him, he said 'Edward is fine.'
Four months passed by and suddenly, Edward came back. He was the same as before - tall, strong, handsome, and his sincere gaze that came along with his amber eyes.
I like this person.
Edward and I got along then as if the long months without contact never happened. I never asked him anything but he did explain that he was doing a mission for the Grand Priest - a follow-up errand to destroy the remaining demons.
Was it the truth? Or was he hiding something?
And then, we got engaged and got married, and I never asked about it again.
Until I was pregnant.
I was suddenly cursed out of the blue, and I assumed that the real reason why Edward went to the Holy Empire with the Grand Priest had something to do with my current situation.
That was the only reason I could think of as to why I am cursed.
Everything fell into place.
I realized that Edward hid that year and never spoke to me or anyone from Glarios since something happened to him. And the obvious expression of my father when he read that letter and he was evading my questions, too.
The king knows about it ...
Why didn't they tell me?
"Is it possible that Lucifer cursed Edward? Then passed on to me?" I looked at my teacher when he didn't respond to me.
Hayden Osborne was thinking deeply then replied, "The curse is most likely passed down from generation to generation. It's that type of spell when a powerful demon will curse the human bloodline. It seems that you only appear to be cursed since the child is inside of you."
Is that what truly happened? So, all of my children will be cursed? I closed my eyes and stood on my ground. My surroundings seemed to be moving.
"I suspect Edward had the same thing that happened to him but obviously, the impact was much less since he's stronger and his divinity pool is akin to an ocean..." my teacher trailed off, in deep thoughts.
"Teacher?" I probed more about the situation.
"I'm guessing he found a way when he was in the Holy Empire. Should we tell your husband and ask since he might know something? And of course, to know the truth whether he was cursed..." my teacher suggested.
The way that Edward held onto his secret... Was he really cursed? It was possible...
Did he know that Lucifer cursed him? If so, why not tell me?
What would happen if Edward knew that it was passed down to his child?
Should I tell him? If I do, will he decide to abort the child?
Will he blame himself? Will he hide away again and never appear?
Edward may seem strong but when it comes to his own responsibility and his pride...
All I could say was that it was his weakness.
"For now, we should keep this a secret, teacher. It's best to keep this between us and avoid trouble. Lest if it was leaked, then I fear something bad will happen ... And is there a way to remove the curse without harming the child?" My tears had already dried and my mind started to plan.
I want my child to live. And save Edward from blaming himself.
Seeing my determination, my old teacher only sighed and shook his head. Walking up to his desk full of papers, he stood still for a moment, thinking, and weighing his options.
Then he faced me and told me that he might have a way to suppress it.
"If Edward is indeed cursed but was able to counter it, it is most likely due to his immeasurable pool of divinity and that overwhelmed the curse itself. Nevertheless, the curse is still there, hiding and being repressed. We can only imitate that kind of situation... then find a way to remove the curse."
I nodded, listening intently to every word my teacher said.
"First, is to let your divinity flow continuously and overpower the curse to suppress it since the child had not developed his powers yet. It's better to do it now when the child is still inside of you so that your divinity can help him survive this phase. Currently, the child is in a vulnerable state."
When I gave my assent, my teacher continued, while I fixed myself.
"It's hard to reverse the conversion of the divine to demonic so it's better to stop it all at once. But the result is rather the same, it will still drain you of your divinity and you won't be able to use your powers," he said.
When the teacher saw the adamant expression on my face, he continued, "However, this choice is better than to let the curse run free. The risk is lower for you and your child."
My teacher had a man-made artifact to link my divine powers and the child. This artifact was made by his years of researching Gormal and was only for one-time use.
"When the child is born, will they be able to find out I'm passing divinity to my child?" I asked, worried about the future.
What would happen if someone noticed it?
"Don't worry. I will modify the artifact a little bit. And this artifact is based on Gormal. Its restraint characteristics will be able to hide your current situation."
The teacher had used the artifact on me and advised me to rest well and keep a healthy body.
However, he further said that it was not enough since the curse was so powerful, and my divine powers had a hard time keeping it in place. He suggested a few more things.
"In books and historical records, there is an artifact that can completely remove demonic powers but... the artifact is a demonic one. The curse may be lifted by the same demonic powers. Somehow, it had gotten lost and seemed to be hiding itself from humans."
Thinking of the future of my child, and the Redgrave House, I convinced my teacher to have someone look for it secretly. If that artifact can save us from this situation, even though it's a demonic one, then I'll be the one to ...
"I'll go look for it myself," said my old teacher, interrupting my thoughts.
And so, my teacher took a risk, went out of the kingdom to find the artifact in the guise of returning to his hometown, and since then, I had not heard any news from him.
I spent so many sleepless nights, worrying about the future. I hope he is fine.
And lastly, was the royal ring artifact, the Gormal itself.
"The royal artifact has powers that can naturally restrain demons by completely sealing them. However, the Gormal's restriction is to seal the body and forever be sealed together with the curse." I remembered what the teacher told me despite me crying out in disbelief.
"Another way to help suppress the curse would be wearing the ring." But since it was impossible, Hayden said that the royal name Regnier would suffice.
"You have to convince the King, Princess."
And that was what happened. The king had seen through it since he had the Gormal.
With my own divinity continuously suppressing the curse and together with the royal name's natural control characteristics, it prevented the demon's curse from fully arising.
Whether it was fortunate or not, Ethan had taken this curse, and Emilia had not.
Ethan was now fine but what would happen in the future?
Will my family forgive me for the choices I made? Will Edward accept the truth?
When Ethan grows up, will he blame me for placing a burden on his shoulders?
For a long time, I did not know what to do. I made a choice, and the world seemed to tell me it was all a mistake.
A demon interrupting the twins' celebration appeared to be a bad omen.
A sad fact:
When the curse was triggered, Emilia's OG soul took the brunt of it and her soul was destroyed, and Ethan somehow survived. Then by chance, Jenny's wandering soul (current Emilia) took over and awoke her consciousness when the body was 5 months old.A/N:
How was the chapter length? I split every chapter when I reach around 3k, and it seems longer than most chapters that I read here, like 1.5-2k at most? Is it okay for you?
As a reader myself, I like longer chapters...

For future reference in regular writing italics are rarely used so frequently since it can be a bit disruptive when reading to shift between regular font and italicized font so much, and it loses some of the impact of being supposed to be emphasizing something. Like-the italics for when the king was casting the spell is the kind of situation/sentence section that would normally have them, and are for at least the first section of the chapter the only place I'd have put in italics(but that's personal preference for me). This seems suspect/incomplete. *No one* can stop a spell once it's cast? Or just no one in the room? Except that includes royals and the hero, who they think still has his power. (Later) And then Icarus does exactly and stops the spell with one of his own
Lillian was just cursed by a demon, no cursed artifact or deal? How boring. /s (/s =end sarcasm, in case you didn't know)
It does raise the question of why on earth was she saying it like that with "It was the only way" when the king accused her of doing something during chapter 1, since as far as we can tell she hasn't actually done anything wrong aside from not wanting her children to die-she hadn't used the cursed artifact her teacher is looking for (and presumably still hasn't)
So original Emilia's soul was destroyed and Jenny's soul wandered in? Did Jenny's soul only really "wake up" 5 months in or did her soul only show up then? There is some difference depending on which is was-the first means poor original Emilia never managed to live to be born and Jenny is fully the Redgraves' daughter, while the second means their original daughter died and was possessed by a newcomer. Was there any part of original Emilia's soul that survived and possibly merged with Jenny's? Or was original Emilia's soul entirely wiped from existence?
As for if Lillian made a mistake or not-I'd say her biggest mistake is not telling Ed about it so they can start trying to figure something out to fix it, rather than hiding things from each other. Her not wanting to let her children die isn't a mistake though
Hello! As always, I'm very grateful for your comments!
"especially since no one could stop a demon spell once it was cast." In this part, I was thinking that once a demon started casting the spell, no one can interrupt it or stop the spell from finishing. And Icarus had cast a barrier powerful enough to counter the demon's spell.
"It was the only way" when the king accused her of doing something during chapter 1. In this part, having a curse that may result in that person turning into a demon is unacceptable. Usually, the knights who were affected by demonic powers and have no way to recover are likely to be killed or something, just in case, since they could turn into a demon. But then, Edward comes in and suppresses Lucifer's curse because he's powerful (plot armor, you could say). But that isn't the case for the twins and they would not survive or maybe they'll turn into demons. Lillian's choice as she said, was the only to save her children and also Edward, even if her life was at stake or others would hate her because, in their culture/world/belief, the best way to do it is to cut it from the roots (that would be Edward and the twins).
"Was there any part of original Emilia's soul that survived and possibly merged with Jenny's? Or was original Emilia's soul entirely wiped from existence?" Hmm, I meant it to be destroyed but.. you just gave me an idea. We'll see, though.
@Turista19 So even if a demon is immediately slain midcast the spell will still complete despite it being dead? That's the part that seems odd to me. You'd normally expect the spell to either fizzle out because of being incomplete or go haywire and just explode with the magic power that had already been built up before the demon died
Ed being able to resist/not be turned by Lucifer's curse isn't quite plot armor (that would be him being entirely unaffected by it), but like was mentioned in story just Ed's raw volume of divine power being enough to hold it at bay.
Lillian's phrasing was odd to me since I'd have expected she'd say something more along the lines of "I refuse to let my child die/be killed" rather than "It was the only way" given the situation. I'd expect her to use the second line if she did something like use the cursed artifact and curse herself to cure Ethan (or made a deal with a demon to get pregnant in the first place). The second line could also work I guess if the king asked her "How could you hide something like this from us?!", but even then the "refuse to let my child be killed" still works better to me. Heck, maybe she'd even phrase it a bit more accusingly and say it as something like "I refuse to allow my child to be murdered for something that isn't his fault!" I think the difference to me is the "it was the only way" line implies she's actively done something like the king accused her of (like use a cursed artifact) vs the "I won't let my child die" line implying it's something she hasn't done/is hiding something (refusing to tell people about Ethan or her curse). Of course, this is all my personal perspective on it and not objective fact, so either line could work in either situation
I do like the idea of part of Emilia's soul managing to survive and merge with Jenny's since she'd at least be able to live vicariously through Jenny and wouldn't simply be completely dead. It's a more bittersweet situation for her rather than just a depressing end. In terms of plot as well it could be the merged fragments of Emilia's soul that let Jenny inhabit the body without issues or rejection, possibly even being the parts that formed the original basis for her divine power (since she'll eventually develop/improve her own divine power later on). If you want you might even have original Emilia stay around (maybe nicknamed Emi or Lia to avoid confusion) as a ghost/spirit with Jenny who has her own consciousness and grows with her, acting as a confidante and friend for Jenny (since I expect she's going to have a rough and lonely childhood). Maybe even be something like being able to temporarily take over their body if Jenny is knocked out or something and keep Jenny from being killed. Like maybe a demon curse targets the soul and hits Jenny's soul, but original Emilia's soul steps up and starts piloting the body to make sure they don't die. That could allow Jenny's soul the time it needs to heal from the curse. If the setting allows for it, if Emilia's soul is still around and conscious it could be an eventual goal of Jenny's to be able to get/make Emilia her own separate body to use so Emilia can live her own life without just riding backseat in their shared body
Wow that went longer than I expected. If any of my mad waffling and rambling sparks some ideas or is something you think would work well, feel free to use it
@MarkofWisdom Yes! Thank you for your thoughts on Lillian's. Maybe I didn't think enough of the phrase, It was the only way. I originally wrote it, the reason being it was the only way she thought of, to save the children. I didn't explain much further to keep the mystery.
So even if a demon is immediately slain midcast the spell will still complete despite it being dead? In here, King Henry's spell was not to kill the demon but only to restrain it. There was a chain around the demon that acted as a barrier that sealed both the demon and spell inside it and so won't affect the outside. As per the royal tutor also said about Gormal. Sorry for the confusion.
@Turista19 For demons' spells going off even if they're killed-I wasn't thinking about the one this chapter with the king casting the sealing spell (that's pretty straightforward), but during stuff like the war with the demons that happened before the story started (and will resume during the story as well, because of course it will). Like, during the war with Ed at his full power, would he be able to stop a demon's spell by killing the demon in an instant? Or would he have to do something like flood the area with divine energy to cancel/overwhelm the spell and nullify/cancel it despite the demon being dead?
I ask this because it's sort of relevant to how the characters will deal with demons in the future if situations like this one pop up where a demon decides to self destruct, but the king isn't around to seal it. Like, can they stop the self destruct by doing something like cutting the demon's head off before it can complete the spell? Or do they have to bunker down/blow it away to mitigate the explosion since they may be unable to stop it. The demons having access to troops that can teleport in to some secure area and blow themselves up in a way that can't be stopped seems a bit too ridiculous for the cast to deal with
@MarkofWisdom Yes, when a demon decides to self-destruct, there are numerous ways to protect themselves. Without the king to seal it, they can also cast a barrier (like Icarus, in this case, several barriers are needed to counter the self-destruct spell), or maybe an artifact to help them seal or protect themselves.
I haven't gotten to the part where I would introduce artifacts in extreme detail though, but they're an important part of this novel.
But regarding teleporting demon troops and blowing themselves up - well, this is a situation that they need to deal with in the future (maybe). Hardships and struggles (and casualties too) are a part of this. Maybe, MC will find a way to truly stop the demons.
Thank you for commenting. Really appreciate it since this helps me in world-building and development of the characters.
@Turista19 so demon self destructing can’t be stopped, just defended against? Sheesh, pretty ridiculous and difficult to deal with. I’m sure the teleporting self destructing demons aren’t extremely numerous/expendable since if they were the demons would just spam them endlessly and blow all of their enemies up while they’re asleep in their homes or something, but that the possibility exists would cause a hell of a lot of paranoia and stress among the human cast since it could strike without warning at any time and (almost) any place
Glad to help you sort out the worldbuilding and stuff since I enjoy making wild speculations and rambling theories
