Day 149,

Got up early and hurried out the door.  Still no Maiko.  Ran down the road to town as fast as I dared in the rain with slick cobblestone.  So more like a brisk jog.  Got to the library only mildly damp and with just enough time to hide my laundry downstairs and make an attempt to not look so disheveled before the arrival of impressionable young minds.

Despite the initial rush though it wound up being a slow day overall.  I’d had some concerns about Cass after the other night but she appeared to be fine.  I’m continuing to feel tentatively confident regarding the paired tutoring sessions in the latter half of the school day.  Went through more birth and death records.  Haven’t seen much more mention of Devi despite keeping an eye out for entries about her.  Did she not get up to much, did the archivist at the time not pay much attention to her, or is writing down every unusual thing an outsider does an archive-cluttering waste of paper?

I imagine that with joining the guards Devi would have encountered Theo sooner and more regularly than I did.  I wonder if he gave her the same talk about not looking for answers.

While I’m thinking about it and have my journal in front of me: another oddity that I realized the other day.  Either a disproportionate number of stories in that half of the archive were contributed by Devi and the old archivist (plausible considering he was well in position to do so) or the arrival of outsiders doesn’t temporally correlate to the passage of time in the world I remember coming from.  Or, I suppose, Theo cleaned out stories as well as records.  Why he would, I don’t know.  Then again they weren’t exactly cleanly separated before I got here, so he may have just grabbed them as well out of simple convenience.
