Nadia's hands shook as she undid the seat belt. They had to get away. They had to—

When she turned her head to the right she felt like her brain moved half a second after her skull did. Moshe was slumped over in the passenger seat, blood splattered, his eyes like hollow glass.

There was no time to let herself cry. She fumbled with her seat belt again until it clicked open and let her fall out of the vehicle. One of her shoes liberated itself from her feet and stayed behind in the wreck of the car. She had to keep moving, even over the broken glass. Her head throbbed.

A car drove past, ignoring the crash.

She stumbled forward in an uneven limp. Thinking was too hard. Everything in her mind wobbled around like everything had in the car in those moments before the airbags ballooned into life. Her stalker could be anywhere nearby. She hurt too much to run but knew it was her only chance. Nobody should be loved like this.

When she looked up and saw that person standing in the darkness that the convenience store security cameras couldn't cover she knew it was too late for her.
