Eating in the lively cafeteria while avoiding the gaze of others. Alum tried to stay as low as possible. Why, one might ask?

Well… he was sitting beside a princess and across a saint, one of which has a crush on him. It appears to be a major one at that…

(Noel is unusually quiet… He enjoys the tense atmosphere I’m in… doesn’t he?)

Alum turned to his friend Noel, only for the other party to smugly grin while he slowly ate. It wasn’t all bad since Amethely absentmindedly gazed at him occasionally. Each time their eyes met, Amethely would turn away shyly and glance back—but this made the food taste slightly sweeter for anyone watching.

Whenever either of them tried to start a conversation, they’d tense up and stare into the eyes of one other, which went on for a while.

After finishing her meal, Luna went to prepare for the lecture. Chely also went with her. Not wanting to be left behind, Amethely left with them. Shortly after the three left, all the eyes befell on Alum.

Alum wasn’t bothered and leisurely took his time snacking on treats. He knew full well what the others wanted to ask. But, he had no obligation to tell them. Still…the teasingly smug stare from Emely and Noel made him somewhat flustered.

Emely, the cousin who took him in after his parents died, felt happy now that he finally had someone in his heart. But she couldn’t help but feel pity for him. No family member wanted to take him in. Even her mother, who had been his tutor for a few years, didn't want to.

She was surprised that no one wanted to take him in, but as it turned out, whatever they did, they wouldn’t be able to get the money left by his parents. But she doubted that money was the only reason. For them, Alum might as well be the devil's child. Cold and was too knowledgeable for his age, which many found uncomfortable.

While Emely wasn’t close with her family or the other members, she couldn’t help but spite them more, which led to her adopting him.

That’s why it wasn’t appealing to any of them. But Emely wasn’t after the money, nor was she trying to lure him out of said money. In fact, she did fine with her own capital despite being only 20 at the time.

She let him do whatever he wanted with it and never questioned it, but… it wasn’t like he cared either way. For him, it was only a reminder of a bloody night.

Nevertheless, he spent it on lawyers and private detectives. Despite being so young, he managed to get them to work for him. He even bribed criminals for clues—although he didn’t exactly know what the murderer looked like.

—But… if he were just to see the eyes of the vile monster, he would surely know.

He’d been searching for years until one day. The murderer was found. While in court and sentenced to a lifetime in prison, their eyes met.

“I really should’ve killed that kid,” the criminal said to everyone in the room.

But not too long after the criminal was sentenced, it was found that he had ‘committed suicide’ in his cell. This led to many believing that Alum had killed him in some way—it appeared that Alum wasn’t the only one holding a grudge.

Being framed and losing his purpose in life. He hollowed further. With no one to hate, how would he live on when it was the only reason that kept him going?

One day, after entering college. Alum seemed more human than before.

At first, she only wanted him to enter the college because she worked there and it was a good school. The second was that he was too much of a hollow without her. She did have some hope despite how small—she wished for him to make a friend. To her surprise, he did. It was Noel.

Despite it being a slow change, she could tell he softened up little by little and would even speak. Not too long after that, Alum seemed more interested in things.

He bought sweets home, helped and sheltered small animals until they were fine on their own or found a house for the stray. Even his interactions with her increased. But… he was still distant from everyone else. While she wasn’t sure if he had moved on, she felt happy that he was out of the dark.

Ever since they arrived in this world, he’s been getting to know more people. He befriended Princess Luna, who is known to be cold and stern.

Not only that… he had a cute girl hard-crushing on him—it was none other than The Saint! It was so endearing, and she couldn’t have hoped for any better change.

 …

 …..

 …

While all his previous classmates and recruits were curious, he pretended it was nothing despite all the stares he received.

(What is his relationship with Saint Amethely?) they probably thought. But… even more so. (Why was he with Princess Luna?) was the other question.

Since asking Alum turned out to be meaningless, everyone turned to Noel instead. It was getting too much for him to handle alone. Thus, he sent a pleading glance toward Alum.

 (…I was wrong… okay?)

But Alum just responded with a soft smile.

 (You got this.)

In the end, Miu also stepped in. Emely, on the other hand, watched from the sidelines like an elder sister who enjoys seeing things get lively.

Miu tried to calm everyone down so that they wouldn’t disturb the others who wanted to eat their breakfast peacefully.

But… to them, this behaviour was more common than the quiet peace, and it was more enjoyable this way. Meaning they don't mind. To the onlookers, this behaviour was actually more common than the quiet peace.

Nibbling on the snack as he watched the lively atmosphere, he chucked.

(This isn’t too bad…) Alum thought.

He was in a good mood and told them he would only answer one question. He was honestly surprised himself, but… it wasn’t unpleasant.

Seizing this opportunity, all the recruits gathered and started to discuss what question they wanted to be answered.

While they were all curious about him and Saint Amethely, they’ve all more or less figured it all out. On the other hand, Princess Luna was a new mystery to them. Thus… they asked him what his relationship with Princess Luna was.

“We’re friends, that’s all,” Alum flatly replied.

It was short and… not the answer they were hoping for. They felt somewhat tricked that he gave such a short answer. Since one could tell by just looking…

 Yet…

““Our Princess finally has a friend!””

For some reason, they all started to cheer. And next was…

““Alum, have another friend that isn’t Noel!?””

Although they exaggerated a little, it wasn’t all bad.

 Even his friend Noel…

“Professor! Alum… Alum finally made another friend!!!” he excitedly said.

He’s fully aware that Noel exaggerated his reaction.

Noel then turned to Emely, only to find her in tears. Alum also turned his attention to her, and his eyes widened. He felt something in his chest. It was strange, but… he felt relieved somehow. But why…?

After all… she was in tears… yet… there was a gentle smile.

 “...”

 “...Professor Emely?” Noel asked.

His voice was filled with concern, but… Emely just shook her head.

 “N-No… it’s not like that… I’m just so happy, that’s all.”

It was quiet, but everyone was relieved that she wasn’t sad.

“After all… he made friends, has become sweeter, and… and might even have a girlfriend soon!”

 Noel nodded in agreement.

(Well, I’m glad I didn’t hurt her again…) Alum thought.

 “......”

Most were slightly confused. But when Noel explained that Alum and Emely were blood-related, it made more sense.

Alum didn’t say much after that and stood up and left. But… they could all see that his ears were slightly red, and they found it to be a rather nice contrast to his usual aloof self.

 …

 …..

 …

In the training ground, everyone practised magic spells and blade work. Alum observed as he read a book about the facility itself.

It had many practice targets resistant to different things. It was surrounded by magic absorbent structures and various practice weapons.

Luna would occasionally cast a few spells to demonstrate and guide. Amethely and Chely did the same, except… Amethely couldn’t use her magic.

This is why she explains difficult-to-understand concepts and lets Chely and Luna demonstrate. However… his eyes met hers on occasion, and she’d give him a small, feeble wave. To which he replied with a nod.

 Moreover…

Alum would blush slightly with a faint smile, unable to control his expressions fully. Amethely, on the other hand—was even worse at it.

Every time they had a small exchange, her face would turn red as her elegance melted. The onlookers would just chuckle whenever they saw the reaction.

Alum wasn’t so dense that he wouldn’t notice her peculiar interest in him. And he knew she held some sort of affection toward him.

Still… he doesn’t know how to ask her out or confess. Even though he had received a bunch of love confessions throughout his life, never once did he accept nor confess himself.

He also never noticed that it required courage…and felt strangely opposed to the notion despite his lack of hesitation to take action.

(Should I just ask? How close do we have to be? What is the right place and timing?)

While in deep thought and going mildly insane. Alum just knew that he couldn’t let her confess first, and he was determined to move their relationship and be the one to confess.

After all, he wanted her to think he was cool, capable and reliable. But… how does one even impress a girl like her? She’s a saint… one of the most powerful individuals on the planet, with powers that rival ancient beasts…

Regardless of any obstacle… he has to try at least… right?

 …

 …..

 …

Noel noticed that Alum seemed a little troubled while learning magic; thus wanted to start a small conversation.

“What? Already tired?” Chely flatly asked.

 (So not cute…)

He felt like she taunted him but decided not to reply with any snarky remarks.

“A little. Although… Alum seems to be troubled by something.”

 “.....”

She just meant to tease him a little… but…

(I guess that came out the wrong way…)Chely knew she wasn’t the best at coming off as friendly, but… (It was this bad, huh…?) She turned her attention to Alum, and he did seem bothered by something.

 “Has anyone witnessed his magic?”

 Noel shook his head.

“I see. What if we get Ame to teach him?” Chely suggested.

(It is a good idea, however…)

“We could try, but knowing him. He probably doesn’t need any guidance.” Noel replied.

Luna was close by and happened to overhear their conversation. Thus, she decided to join them.

“Hmm, Al should know how to cast spells. Theoretically, that is.”

Noel was slightly conflicted that Luna casually called Alum by a nickname. After all, it took him almost a whole year to befriend the guy.

Seeing Noel being slightly grumpy and sour, she giggles a little.

“Al mentions you a lot, you know? How you opened his eyes and helped him out. Al is grateful and proud of you… although… he probably doesn’t want to admit it.”

Hearing this, he felt embarrassed. He didn’t know

 “Thank you…” Noel meekly replied.

(That’s Princess Luna for you…) Chely thought.

 …

 …..

 …

Leaning back on the tree, he placed the book down and picked up the next one. But Luna interrupted him.

 “Al, you got the time?”

“Oh, Luna? What’s the matter? Alum asked.

“Since you’re here. Isn’t it a waste to not participate? Everyone is curious about you and your capabilities. Beside that… Don’t you want Saint Amethely to teach you?

 (That’s it!) Alum thought.

It was his time to show off, and he got up with determination. Luna softly chuckled when she saw his change of demeanour.

 (Al is a little childish… isn’t he?)

 …

 ..

Shortly after that, everyone gathered around him. They wanted to see his abilities since he would be doing things independently. To their surprise… they’d learned that he had never cast a spell before.

Of course, Amethely was in charge of guiding him. But, there was a minor inconvenience…

(How do I show him how to cast spells if I, myself, can’t?!)

Although she wanted him to think she was cool and dependable, she wasn’t allowed to perform any magic since her mana foundation wasn’t working as intended.

 (I-I will do my best!)

Alum, on the other hand, felt slightly anxious. The last time he attempted to use magic was when he felt threatened by Chely.

Still, he didn’t want Amethely to think he was uncool. Thus, he needed to cook something up. He needed to do it fast, and it had to be impressive.

While Alum was in deep thought, Amethely realised that he still had a suppressant mana amulet.

 (Maybe…)

Alum realised that Amethely was staring at him. She was fidgeting as she blushed. She also seemed somewhat uneasy and uncertain.

 “...?”

Although he did not know why she acted that way, he found it cute, and a warm sensation struck his chest, which made him unconsciously smile. Amethely, on the other hand, had made up her mind. She was removing that amulet!

“M-Mister Alum… you still have a mana suppressant amulet on…”

 “I suppose I do…”

He just realised this himself—no wonder he couldn’t feel anything. But as he was about to remove it. Amethely had gotten closer and looked straight into his eyes. This made him blush since he didn’t know why she had suddenly got so close.

 “W-Wait…! I-I can remove it for you…!”

(She’s red, and the way she seemed anxious is… extremely adorable…!)

 “G-Go ahead…” he replied.

But what came next was even more surprising. He felt a soft sensation on his chest as her arms surrounded his neck. He was taller than her, and the way she clung to him, looking up, made it look like an embrace leaning toward a kiss.

Amethely knew that it was bold of her to do it in front of others, too! But…! This was her only option. She needed to charm Alum as much as possible, even if others were watching. She wanted to show him that she wasn’t a coward and that she was dependable, cool and cute!

—In other words, she threw logic out of her head.

image

As Luna was quietly watching, she seemed to understand The Saint a little better. (That is a nice one, Saint Amethely. I knew she was clever, but not sneaky like this. And to think she’d use this opportunity to hug him on the pretext of removing the amulet… Way to go!) She Praised Amethely in her head.

Noel and Chely had the same expression. Both seemed satisfied with the result and even high-fived unconsciously as they fawned over the two.

(Al and Saint Amethely can’t see what was happening around the—cute…)

Thinking along those lines, everyone went from silence to cheer. And there were whistles and squeaks all around.

 ““kyaaa!!!””

 ““Woooow, way to gooo!””

 (.….)

Luna wasn’t entirely sure why, but she felt slightly uncomfortable watching them. She felt happy for them, but at the same time, this lonely conflict was inside her. To be clear, she also felt this way when Alum was talking to Noel.

 …..

 …

After removing the amulet, Amethely backed away as she covered her face with her hand and peaked through her fingers.

She was too embarrassed to face him properly since her actions were too bold! She could see Alum through the gaps of her fingers as he stood there frozen, with his face completely red till his ears.

Amethely always thought that Alum was cool ever since they met. But…

 (He’s too adorable!)

Standing there and recovering from the critical hit, he felt different. Rather… he felt more robust and a lot stronger. The mana that had been suppressed was now released but didn’t go out of control. And with that, Alum felt more confident.

Amethely noticed the change and turned her saint mode to [On], albeit with a red face and a slightly bubbly smile instead of the elegant one.

Seeing the mood around them change. Everyone became silent and watched the two with anticipation.

“Mister Alum has an affinity for water magic and lightning magic, right?”

 Alum nodded.

“Since water magic is easier to control, how about creating a water ball? It’s classed as an elementary-level spell, and I think you can effortlessly do it!”

“Mmm, I’ll give it a try. Also… since I’m calling you Ame, you should remove the Mister from my name… too.”

Looking down and feeling shy, Amethely blushed again, even though she had just recovered from her own attack!

 “Y-Yes, M… A-Alum.”

 “.....”

Alum covered his mouth with his arm, looking the other way.

 “Yeah… Ame.”

Removing his arm, he showed her a gentle smile. He then turned serious as he concentrated his mana and faced the practice target.

Feeling the mana surge, he created the image of a water ball before he realised there was a ball of water on his palm, the size of his hand.

“You did it!” Amethely happily commented.

(...Not all that impressive…) Alum thought.

Not only him, but it seemed like everyone watching was also slightly disappointed.

(Why are you all just watching…?)

Not satisfied with the result, Alum poured more mana into the water ball, making it bigger. Amethely then told him to aim for the target that was 50 meters away.

(This bigger water ball is more impressive, however…)

Alum wasn’t impressed by it. On the other hand, the others were looking at him pouring a massive amount of mana into such an elementary spell—creating a gigantic water ball. It was impressive in a sense since larger spells required more precise control.

(I’m not sure this will do a lot of damage to the target… Oh…! I got an idea!)

Thinking along those lines, Alum condenses the water. It looked like he had lost control of the spell. That is what it seemed, at least.

But… Amethely, Luna and Chely thought otherwise. The spell wasn’t losing mana at all. The amount had increased. But it was more controlled and difficult to notice. Before anyone realised it, there was a barrier surrounding them all. Amethely, who was beside him, had sparkly eyes and was excited.

“Wow~! I’ve never seen a spell like this before!”

“What’s going on?” Everyone seems to think.

After all, they were surrounded by layers of barriers. They didn’t see the need for it. To them, it looked like the water ball had disappeared entirely. But they then realised that Alum was still emitting mana—the spell was just so small they couldn’t see it.

Alum was now somewhat satisfied with the result. He looked at the faintly glowing light and gave it a final touch. He called the spell [Droplet Bomb] and aimed it at the target.

Everyone watched as he released the spell. It was small; they didn’t know if it hit—only to be greeted by a loud explosion and a flash of blue light.

The explosion was way louder, but Luna’s barrier protected them from the shockwave, heat and part of the sound. But a few picked up on this and noticed that there were some cracks in the barriers—which let through the sound.

As the blue light disappeared, they saw only fog. Chely blew away the mist and realised that it also contained static electricity. She sent Alum a bewildered look as if she was judging him.

Everyone was curious about the state of the practice dummy. But they couldn’t see it—or rather… it was gone entirely, as the replacement was a massive crater filled with water. The surrounding trees were blown away or tiled 70°—the barriers they were in also had cracks and were torn.

Noel seemed satisfied and happy about the result; Chely had a look of disbelief while Luna sighed—Amethely stared at the result and cast her eyes at Chely with shock.

(Big sis! H-he doesn’t neeeed meeee at allll!)

Everyone else looked at Alum in astonishment. The culprit himself seemed pleased with the result he’d accomplished.

 (Not bad…)

Trivia? Uh… Ame is cute…?

Welp, to sum it up… despite the magic absorbent materials, he destroyed a big part of the training grounds. How come? Well… it was due to the physical aspect of the spell by releasing the water from so much pressure….
