Chapter 54: Song Tao Noodles

Admin

Hello, welcome back from the weekend and thank you for checking us out again this week.

Here you go, enjoy. And more food porn at the bottom, ?

"Creak~", the sound of the door creaking as it was opened rang out, and the sight of the place immediately appeared in front of them.

This is a normal small house. There is an old stone mill, with a few bamboo fences on the wall, surrounded a small nursery with tiny green seedlings.

"Teacher, are you happy with this house?" Ren Yue asked as he rode his beloved mount, [Reflect Snow] into the house.

"You really understand me well! Let's go! Chang Sheng, you boil some water. Shui Mo, please help to unpack the books!" Sir Song Tao nodded his head with satisfaction, and immediately instructed his two aides.

They lighted some firecrackers, opened the door, welcome the wind to get some fresh air, and boiled some water. After the Shui Mo had arranged Sir Song Tao's pillow, the small adobe becomes Sir Song Tao permanent home!

"Ren Yue, how are your preparations for next year's imperial examination?" Sir Song Tao asked as he drank some tea.

"Teacher, please be at ease." Ren Yue confidentially replied.

"If you are not in a rush to return to the capital, stay here with me for a while more. This place is quiet and you can focus on your studies here. A few days later, the 9th prince will be coming here as well!" Sir Song Tao drank some more tea, and looked very calm.

Most commoners will react with shock and awe at the mention of the words 9th prince, but not Sir Song Tao. He is as calm as ever.

"Yes, teacher!"  Ren Yue cupped his hands.

"Creak~" The main door opened again.

"Is there anyone here?" A woman's voice rang out, loud and clear.

"Teacher, I will go and have a look." Shui Mo immediately headed out.

"Madam, who are looking for?" Shui Mo stood at the open space in front of the gate, and was facing a woman about 30 years of age.

That woman's hair was tied in a way that indicated that she was married, wearing a purple and red cotton cloak, a black colour Bei Zi [2], and a green cotton skirt tied with a hemp apron. Her face is sleek and white, with long thin eyebrows and a touch of make-up.

She slowly walked closer to Shui Mo, and moved her arms as she does so, revealing some old bracelets on her hands.

"Oh, whose child is this? What a handsome lad! Did you just moved in?" That woman smiled as she asked.

"You are?" Shui Mo did not know how to reply.

"Oh! Just one look at you and I know that you must be a scholar type! You are so stiff and talk in this way. I live over there, and is your neighbour. Everyone in the vicinity addressed me Madam Zhen. But you can address me as Auntie Cao! Oh, yes, where are your parents?" Auntie Cao Zhen looked around.

"Shui Mo, who are you talking to?" Ren Yue and Sir Song Tao walked out of the building together.

"Oh! I did not expect that there is such a handsome and dashing young man here! This building had been empty for a long time. Never did I expect that the new owners are two attractive young men," Auntie Cao Zhen saw Ren Yue and immediately smiled.

"Young Master Ren, this is auntie Cao, our neighbour." Shui Mo immediately explained.

"This lady....." Sir Song Tao was about to say something.

"Hahaha, what lady? The last time that I am a lady is 3 years ago [3]. My unfortunate husband passed away last year, leaving me alone. Uncle, you can call me Madam Zhen will do. We are all neighbours and should look out for one another. If you need anything, feel free to borrow from me!" Auntie Cao Zhen is a positive and friendly woman.

"Oh, my surname is Yue, and was a small official in the capital. Today, I am old, and have retired, and come back to my hometown to live out the rest of my days," Sir Song Tao smiled, "Thank you for your kind intentions. I have just returned, and if I need to, I will definitely ask for your kind assistance. Madam Zhen, if you need to anything from me, feel free to ask as well. We are all neighbours and should help one another!"

Auntie Cao Zhen saw that this elderly man was dress simply and does not have any airs of superiority. Therefore she thought that he must be a low ranking official.

"That's right, neighbours should help one another!"

Then Auntie Cao Zhen begins to gossip like all middle age women do, "Elder Yue, you come from the capital? I heard that there is a super VIP had come here recently, and it is rumoured that this super VIP is the teacher of the emperor! He is a big shot! I heard that Governor Zhao, in order to curry favour with him, had even offered his own mansion so that he had a place to stay. He even drove off the villagers living nearby!"

"Sigh, both of you are court officials from the capital, but you are so friendly while he is so high and haughty. Oh, yes, do you know the big shot from the capital?"

Ren Yue was stunned.

Shui Mo looked at the floor. The ants seemed very interesting.

"How could I have the pleasure to know such a super VIP like this?" Sir Song Tao smiled as he replied.

"Oh yes, I forgot, I just purchase some vegetables. I need to go back and cook. Please busy yourselves. If you have time, come over and chat with us!" Auntie Cao Zhen seemed to recall something and immediately left.

They busied themselves for the whole afternoon. Finally, it is time for dinner.

Chang Sheng purchased some noodles and rice, and some vegetables. After cooking for some time, he finally served the dishes that he had cooked.

"Teacher, Young Master Ren, Shui Mo, time for dinner!"

Sir Song Tao rubbed his belly. The winter is very cold, and he gets hungry very fast.

He lifted up his chopsticks and was about to grab some vegetables when his hand and the chopsticks froze in mid-air.

The dining table had a plate of black colour egg, a messy vegetable stir-fry, and a bowl of black colour and greasy winter melon soup.

"Teacher, we should not let Uncle Sheng cook!" Shui Mo did not eat anything other the rice and muttered.

"Teacher, you come back here and didn't bring any chefs with you?" Ren Yue looked at the unappetizing dishes and was stunned.

"Oh, I thought that cooking is a simple thing.  Chang Sheng had followed me for so many years, and he is enough!" Sir Song Tao shook his head.

"Teacher, it is my fault. From now on, I will learn cooking and study hard, and will not disappoint you." Chang Sheng felt very embarrassed.

"Teacher, do not blame Uncle Sheng. You had stayed in the palace for a long time, and someone will handle all the housework and cooking for us. The fact that Uncle Sheng could not cook well is because he was too used to the life in the palace. As for the dinner tonight, I will go out and buy some food for you!" Ren Yue said this and immediately stood up.

"Forget it, it is very cold. Stay and try the food I cook!" Sir Song Tao sighed.

"Teacher, you can cook?" Shui Mo was surprised.

"Is this difficult?" Sir Song Tao said, and headed into the kitchen.

Ren Yue looked on with curiosity.

Sir Song Tao took a pot and boiled some water.

"Teacher, what do you want to cook?" Ren Yue asked.

"You will know it later. Let's go, help me pick some scallions from the garden!" Sir Song Tao took them the garden, and they dug out some scallions.

Then he washed them and cut them.

At this time, the water had boiled. Sir Song Tao took some noodles and toss them into the wok.

He stirred the noodles. When the noodles are cooked, he added a bit of salt and took them out.

The noodles were divided into 4 bowls. Then he added some soup and scattered the scallions, and added a drop of sesame oil.

A bowl of scallion noodles in clear waters [1] is ready for consumption!

"All right, let's eat!" Sir Song Tao said. He frowned and heartened his heart as he tried the noodles he cooked.

Notes

[1] Try as I might, I could not find any recipe for scallion noodles. I think it is something like a packet of instant noodles with some scallions on top. But talking about noodles, I like to introduce a favourite dish of noodles of mine, from Korea - the famous JAJANGMYEON - or in simple English, black bean sauce noodles.

This dish is like an Asian version of 'pasta' and is super yummy.

[2] Bei Zi is a type of clothing worn by women during the Han dynasty, in ancient times. See https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%A4%99%E5%AD%90

[3] In ancient China, a woman is called a lady if they are not married. E.g. Lady Wen Rou, and a madam if they are.
