SERENDIPITY PART 2

Are you sure you took them before leaving?”, a blonde girl with shoulder length hair asked to her companion, both of them waiting in front of a door carrying heavy bags of items.

Positive! It’s just that I’m still getting used to purses, you know, and… urgh, where the hell are they?”, a black haired girl with twin dyed pink strands framing her face answered, annoyed as she rummaged through her purse.

Here!”, she finally produced a set of keys, and took a second to open the door of their rented home. They had been living in it for a little more than two weeks already, and it felt like home for both of them. Their first adult home of their own.

After taking off their shoes, they went to the kitchen side of the single big room most of their home consisted of, and started unloading the shopping in their respective locations. She grabbed a stool to reach the top shelves, out of reach for both girls. Alex was a bit taller than Sophie in her girl form (her only legally allowed one), but both needed the help. It was funny that Alex was a second away from being able to reach by herself, shifting into her birth form, but she really didn’t want to. The shift spell was also very taxing for her, so even discounting the wave of dysphoria she would totally get from the shift she was not particularly interested in exhausting herself to place a few cans of food.

They both sat down on the sofa, wearing similar outfits. Sophie was wearing a light blue T-shirt and white shorts, while Alex was wearing a light pink T-shirt and black shorts. She was not super happy that one could infer the outline of her bra through her T-shirt, even if it gave her some euphoria, but her only available bra was black. They really needed to do a laundry round soon.

They looked at the clock while idly cuddling on the sofa. In a few minutes, they would be able to fill their university class selection! Given that they both had been accepted, this was a process to select which courses they would take this first year. Their bachelor’s had already been selected as they got accepted, Alex going into physics while Sophie went into marketing. Being first year, they didn’t have many electives to choose, but they were both excited about it. They knew they would not be able to be together much during classes, but they were both really looking forward to the university experience. They might even join some clubs!

Finally, it was time, and both of them grabbed their laptops to log in and start the selection. The electives all had limited student size, so they needed to be quick not to miss the ones they wanted. Of course, not so fast they would risk making a mistake, but still…

Alex looked at the curriculum, checking that she was picking up all her compulsory classes before checking the electives. She was feeling a mixture of excitement and worry, knowing that while many topics sounded quite interesting, they could also (and most likely would) be brutal. As for electives, she had two out of four she could choose, opting finally to take biophysics and fluid dynamics, the most interesting sounding ones of the bunch.

As she was about to hit accept, though, a pop up jumped to her screen. “Attention: a compulsory class has been added to the necessary requirements. Please select it before continuing.”, it read. Going back, she saw that now, in a different color, there was a new class in her list of options. Magical foundations: legislation, theory and practice.

UHHHHH…”, she started saying dumbfounded. What the hell was THAT??

A...Alex, dear, did you also get a magic class…?”, Sophie started saying, clearly dumbfounded herself.

This was… what? While looking at Sophie’s confused expression, she started thinking back to her meeting with the detective. This HAD to be related to the Ministry of Magic. Didn’t he mention something about a magic license? It sounded so surreal…

I… I think this is the class to get our magic licenses”, she told Sophie. She blinked multiple times as she processed what she had just learned, but eventually accepted the answer. With a mix of excitement and worry, they held their hands together as they both accepted this course, making a sigh of relief as the process simply continued as usual afterwards.

Finally, they completed the class selection, and were able to print the justifying documentation just in case. Both of them found it quite curious how, instead of the magic class, the list of courses included a printer failure-like line substituting it. That way, everybody would think that something went wrong with the printing of their documents, without revealing anything about the magical involvement. Alex was once again amazed at the things people from the MoM were able to, and willing to, do.

Soooooooo it’s done”, Alex said to Sophie.

Yep”, she answered.

We’re going to study magic”, Alex said again.

Yep”, she replied a second time.

They both looked at each other and smiled excitedly. They were going to learn magic! Real magic! They had only recently learned of its existence, and now they were going to be explicitly taught how to do it in class! WOW! It felt like one of those fantasy stories Alex read often as an early teenager. Most people would dream of being taught magic, and they were going to be kinda forced to do it, just like that.

They sat back down on the sofa, Alex resting her head on Sophie’s side, as they started to think about what university might hold. She couldn’t wait!
