Finally, Friday afternoon had arrived. This first week had been quite intense, Alex thought to herself, with all the new people she had met and classes she had attended. On the regular classes, she had gotten closer to Sandra, Tina and Rachel, effectively becoming her default class and lunch companions throughout the days. The classes themselves were fine for now, starting from the basics as a form of review, except for mathematical analysis, which was kicking everyone’s ass right from the get go. As for the magical classes… excluding what happened the first day, they had been mostly really boring, going over the legal definition of different terms and the history of the legislation and stuff. The asshole hadn’t bothered them again, probably terrified of Suki actually making good of her (not so subtle) threat.
She took a deep breath. It was finally Friday, the classes were over for the week. And right now, they were getting ready for a party! The queer group was throwing a new term party today, and they were both excited to meet more queer people, given that basically their friends were the only ones they knew from high school. And maybe, if they liked the vibes, join the group themselves! Alex herself was quite nervous, having discovered that she was a transbian (or just queer in any way) just a couple months ago. Sophie and her had decided to just say that Alex was a lesbian, and hide the fact that she was trans. Given her modified paperwork and the cis-looking body she possessed, telling people that she was AMAB could lead to way too many complicated questions that they were legally not allowed to answer.
Since it was still really warm, they had decided to wear rather casual and summery clothing. Sophie was wearing a lilac spaghetti-strap top with black shorts and sandals, while Alex decided to dress up a bit more and grab her cute white skirt paired with a light pink T-shirt, and medium heeled sandals. Thankfully, she was not particularly a fan of dancing, she was still getting used to heels in general… After doing their makeup (Alex was still in training, so Sophie had been helping her out), they took their purses and they were off.
The party was hosted in a large grassy area in front of the philosophy faculty, where the group had their headquarters. The area was already quite full of people, there might have been 200 or so already. On the front there was a DJ playing music through two gigantic speakers, making the whole area boom with every beat. Alex was not a fan of this feeling, Sophie knew that, so they decided to stay mostly to the back of the crowd, not that they liked crowds anyway. On the sides there were 4 bar tents set up, with rather long looking lines of people wanting to order food and drinks. Off to a corner, the recruiting station was manned by a couple of people from the group, asking for new members. Overall, it was more or less what she imagined a university party to be.
Alex and Sophie were discussing the approach for trying to maybe say hi to someone in the group when suddenly…
“BOOO!”, someone shouted behind them. They both shrieked and jumped away, almost falling to their butts. The culprit, Suki, was laughing her ass off about her little joke. She was wearing an outfit similar to her first day of magic class, but with a light pink T-shirt that closely matched her own (currently hidden) fur.
“Hey, girls, fancy seeing you here”, she said with a smirk. “I mean, it’s not like I didn’t expect it, you two made it quite clear the first day of class. I’m a lesbian myself, so I guess you can imagine why I had such a strong reaction to that bigoted piece of shit”, she said with a shrug. “Maybe I should have set him on fire for real, my pink fire is quite the show I’m told”. Her smile was malicious, but they both assumed she was just joking. ...Right?
“Should… should we be talking about it so out in the open”, Alex asked Suki, who seemed to be way too open about what was supposed to be top secret.
“Ugh, seriously, everyone in this country is so uptight about this”, she answered a bit annoyed. “If people overhear, they probably will think we were venting about a homophobe we encountered somewhere, sadly there are many of those around. Which, as far as I know, it’s what we were doing~”, she finished with a wink.
Alex was very confused about how forward this woman could be. They had been seriously warned about the consequences of this getting out, and she didn’t seem to care much. Still, it was quite nice to have someone else to talk about it…
“Seriously, what an asshole. Just because you have a male form…”, she continued with her complaints about Jim. Alex flinched a bit at the memory of having her birth form, but it’s not like she was going to be asked to show it or anything. She just wanted to be a normal girl, not having to deal with all these lies about it...
Suki stopped talking and stared at Alex for a couple of seconds in silence, squinting her eyes. Before Alex could ask her what was wrong, she spoke again.
“So, he was right, you ARE transgender”.
Alex’s and Sophie’s eyes shot up immediately. How did she know?? They were going to keep it a secret! Having a male form didn’t mean that she was not a cis woman, as far as she was concerned. Then how…?
“Aaaand you have all but confirmed it with your facial expressions”, Suki answered with a giggle. “I guess you’re curious how I figured it out, huh?”. They both nodded, still a bit dumbfounded. “Well, first I know you’re a shifter with at least one male form, which in itself doesn’t mean anything of course. Your reaction just now, though, made it clear that you didn’t like your male forms. But, of course, a shifter can choose whatever form they wish, so if you didn’t like it, you could just not use it”. Suki paused for a moment, and Alex wondered where was she going with all this, so far it seemed to be kind of a reach… “But you clearly resent their existence. Why would a shifter hate her forms, if she could just ignore them? Then I realized, there was one form that no shifter can ignore: their birth form. Which lead me to the conclusion, that you, my dear, are AMAB.”
“Uhh…”, Alex started responding. It’s not like she was wrong, but there were a few things in her deductions that were off. But her origins were supposed to be under strict confidentiality, what should she answer? “You’re right, Suki”, Sophie answered for her. “But we were hoping to keep it a secret, can you keep it for us?”. Alex figured that Sophie decided being direct was the best approach, maybe she was correct.
“Sure. It’s not my place to say anything anyway. And besides, it’s not like anyone would doubt that your cute little girlfriend is anything other than a beautiful woman. Not like you’re not good looking yourself, Sophie”. Alex was blushing quite hard, she was not used to being complimented like that. Was she flirting with them both? Wasn’t she a bit too close to them?
Before she could mention anything, Suki had already moved a bit further away. “So, uh…”, she started saying, looking slightly away. “I was thinking about joining to make some queer friends, would you… well… want to be friends?”, she finished still without looking at them.
Alex looked at Sophie, and with their couple telepathic powers (totally not made up), they agreed that they wanted to befriend the cool but mysterious foxgirl. “Sure!”, they both said at the same time.
“Hey, let’s join anyway! I’m sure it would be fun!”, Suki said as she pulled the two girls along. Well, they wanted to make some queer friends, no? Mission accomplished, Alex thought.
