II. GLOSSARIES

(The below information may contain minor spoilers, but frankly should not matter much even if you haven't read the first chapter)

Races

  • Azure: azure orphans or changelings, creatures believed to be born from living or dead humans who were isolated in the sky for a long period
  • Finding: the act of finding and bringing an azure to civilization
  • Wyvern: a humanoid race with horns and a tail.
  • Pledge: a ritual through which a wyvern and a human or azure can earn the ability to fly

Creatures

  • Winged beasts: a category of beasts that roam the skies. There are some in this category without wings, though they are rare.
  • Leviathans: legendary winged beasts who are said to have lived since the first age.
  • Nymphs: creatures of many variants in different habitats, often resemble human females.
  • Nephelea: cloud nymphs

Deities

  • Canon gods and goddesses: Old deities worshiped by those not in the Pagan Empire’s sphere of influences
  • Ashoran of Charity: The Goddess of Charity, Her Mercy is her star
  • Aurora of the Dawn: The Goddess of Dawn, Golden Dawn is her star
  • Raisers: pagan deities
  • Raiser Aachen’s symbol: a torch bound in chains. Slaves are marked by this symbol to bind them to the contracted master.
  • Raiser Xango’s lodestone: a legendary relic that is said to gift the champion of the Raisers superhuman powers

Stars

  • Star Cycle: a period of fortnight-long when a constellation of the star cycle’s namesake gains the heaven’s zenith.
  • Lost Azure: the star cycle at the end of the year
  • First Wyvern: the star cycle at the beginning of the year
  • Her Mercy: a star cycle

Locations:

  • Underland: the land beneath the world of floating lands
  • Skybed: the layer of even clouds separating the dwelling lands from the underland
  • Absalomi: a princedom under the pagan empire’s rule
  • Ammonia: a kingdom under the pagan empire’s rule, long rival of Absalomi
  • Xenon: a border city of Ammonia

Runes and imbued items

  • Runes of Power: symbols imbued with power used to bestow magical effects on engraved objects. The runes must be imbued with sufficient power to take effect
  • Hierogram: unique runes with a personal touch from the crafter
  • Hierogram of Beginning: the hierogram wielded by the Order of Anemone’s commandant Rosa Alba
  • Runestaff: a staff carved with runes of power to invoke their effects
  • Rosa graver: a graver imbued with Lex’s power

The crew and the ship:

  • The captain: Lady Aurora of the Dawn, the Last of the Dragons. The Daybright is hers. Her direct subordinates are the mates.
  • Justitia: the chief mate and eldest sister of the Hours. She’s the captain’s second in command.
  • Lex: the second mate and middle sister of the Hours. She supervises the slaves, azures, free sailors, Priests and all other matters in the midships and the forecastles.
  • Pax: the third mate and youngest sister of the Hours. Her charge is the housekeeping of the quarterdecks, including the Citadel, the Hall of Wreaths, the Hoard, the armory, the galley and others. The matters of the servants, guardsmen, and the alae are her chief concerns.
  • Officers: in charge of various duties under Pax’s command.
  • Boatswains: petty officers under Lex’s command.
  • Priests: members of the Temple who use their Art Winds to drive airships. On the Daybright they dwell in the gondola under the envelope
  • Guards: armed personnel stationed in the quarterdeck at vital areas
  • Maidservants: housekeeping workers of the quarterdeck. One is also assigned to each pair of alares.
  • The Citadel: atop the Daybright’s quarterdeck, it’s where the officers of the Daybright live.
  • Rosa Alba: Prima Alae of Ala Vernal and commandant of the Anemone Order, she is in the direct command of third mate Pax
  • The Anemone Alae: alares of the Anemone Order, under Rosa Alba’s direct command.
  • The Hall of Wreaths: a place where the Anemone alares gathered to dine and frolic

The Alae

  • Ala (Alae): the traditional name for a squadron of alares
  • Alaris (Alares): a knight or wyvern of an ala
  • Prima Alae (Primae Alae): leader of an ala
  • Ala-sister/Ala-brother: how members of an ala refer to each other
  • Knight: the person in a pledged pair who is not a wyvern
  • Pledge-sister: a form of address between two pledged alares
  • Seasonal Alae: Anemone alae named after the four seasons, usually tasked with special missions.
  • Wind Rose Alae: other alae of the Anemone order
  • Seasonal Alae: Ala Vernal, Ala Estival, Ala Autumnal, Ala Hiemal
  • Wind Rose Alae: Ala Septentrio, Ala Aquilo, Ala Caecias, Ala Subsolanus (Out of commission), Ala Vulturnus, Ala Euronotus, Ala Auster, Ala Libonotus, Ala Africus, Ala Favonius, Ala Corus, Ala Thrascias
