Maxwell Munin wakes up one morning to discover himself dead, a death which has dire implications for the functioning of the universe. He has slipped into the Universal Backend, the operational core of existence. His death is yet another malfunction in a world barely keeping up with the technology on which it relies. With the help of an amphibious Caretaker, an exasperated cleaning robot, and a demon in a bowler hat, Maxwell must find a way to get home and get the universe running again.
