Nathan, a young boy in the streets of Vallis, was once set to follow his father's footsteps in becoming an Inquisitor. Life doesn't always work out the way one expects, however, and now he must find his own way in the world. When he meets a witch, a vile creature puppeting the corpse of a woman, a creature he expected to spend his life devoted to killing, what will he do when instead of fighting him, she offers him a deal? 'A wish for a favor.' And how exactly does she know about his deepest secret, a secret he has kept from nearly everyone he knows? Nathan realizes the wrong step ahead could mean his death, but the dream of a better life may be what carves the deadly path forward.
CW: Violence, Abuse, Racism, Transphobia, Dysphoria
Both the characters and the world have been constructed so well that even though it's so different from our reality, you can still deeply relate to the emotions and experiences here. This extends beyond the main character, and includes at least one antagonist (it's still only chapter four, so I'm leaving the door open to there being more) that feels like a real person too.
