If you are looking for something creepy, scary, or diabolical give this set of collections a chance. If you are not really into that stuff, I recommend skipping straight away to the chapter named "Don Whitman’s Masterpiece" and then "The Fertile Earth."
But if you are really on the edge, then go and read "The Pyramid at the End of the Street" it might not be the best of the set, but is short and gets to the point. Since the stories are independent of each other, you don't need to read one to understand the other. But whatever you do, don't read from the chronical order. Read the three chapters that I've mentioned before you give the rest a try.
