It is the Virtual 2040's, and a conspiracy is afoot on both Earth and the MMO world of Mundus that could ruin the creators of The Wonders of Mundus and permanently strand an entire server of it's players in the game. Deedee Yeowoo, once an Underemployed Human Schlub and now a Foxgirl Cleric, and her friends in Free Company Dungeon Crawling and Chill have been sent by the Contessa of Viacruz County to the sleepy village of Vinyedo Real, where she suspects the Griefers that may be responsible have enacted the next phase of their plan.

Meanwhile, on Earth, a man who realized too late that he loved the person who became Deedee is given the chance to enter the gameworld to rescue her, or at least offer assistance. Which is bound to become incredibly awkward, given that she's already in love with both hapless but vivacious streamer turned vulpine warrior Ace Striker and the elegant, graceful social worker turned paladin, Alesha Herezhade...

The peasants of Vinyedo have a hard enough time making ends meet without the new threat of monsters coming in to eat or destroy their crops, and they're suspicious of outsiders - since most of the ones they meet are there to take the fruits of their hard earned labor as taxes, and in the best of years the local lord Orlando Molinaro takes a pretty tithe himself for the care and feeding of his bannermen and servants. The Church of Aurora doesn't trust the Temple of Eranda or the Flammite Sisterhood, and the sharecroppers resent the artisans down Tavern Row and wealthy freedmen of the Kosmas family, who claim Deedee's friend, the merchant Tayeb, among their kin...

Deedee and her Free Company must unravel the mystery of who is harrassing the town of Vinyedo and why. Because if it is the Griefers, and their sinister warleader Sara Dreschner, then they will stop at nothing to be a power behind the thrones of Mundus, not even the murder of innocents...
