Cozca is a Southlander—small for her kind, but a giant compared to most humans in the continent of Aska. She is brave, loyal, and kind. She knows little about the lands north of her. She knows little about anything, really. What she knows is how to hunt, fight, camp, heal, and work. She has traveled from her strange homeland in the south to the Midden: a boreal region inhabited by the free races after the Uprising; a war optimistically named The Last War by its victors. She's set out to return a gift, to claim her father's sword, and to rob her mother.

Edrelle is an Elf—tall for her kind, but a bit shorter than most humans. She is craven, duplicitous, and cruel. She knows everything about the Midden. She knows quite a bit about everything, really. She knows how to steal, torture, sneak, spy, and murder. She was created in an ancient alchemical vat to be an assassin for her family who live north of the Midden—the High Elves upon the frozen mountain of Elder's Peak, to fight in their wars and put down the allied races' Uprising. She's set out to rekindle an old flame, open a vault, and to rob Cozca's mother.

This is the story of how their lives intertangle. How they must both overcome their pasts, the pasts of their families, and the past of the world. How the generations of the future will be cursed by what we leave behind.
