The epic story of a knight who defies his social status to dance with his princess, and the witch who destroys his dreams out of selfish love.
Thomas is a knight from humble beginnings with one goal in his heart, to dance with the princess of Brigadoon, Fenella. He becomes strong of both heart and mind, and during his training befriends the witch, Morag, who lives in the woods away from society. She falls in love with him, but he cannot be with her. Torn by jealousy and selfish love, Morag will do anything to stop Thomas from marrying Fenella, even destroy all of Brigadoon.
This is Fanfiction. It's based off the second sub quest of Dragon Quest 9 videogame. Originally I was mad since it felt like plagiarism since the only thing that changed was a few of the names, but I thought to give it a chance. It's listed on Royal Road as "AI-assisted" so maybe the Author didn't know that the names had been used already.
The reason I was interested in this was the familiarity and that I have written a few closeted DQ9 fanfictions so I have memorized the plotline, and recognized the name, Morag.
Spoilers Ahead for this story and DQ9, but I have hope that maybe the Author can turn this story around and make it original since right now it's blatant plagiarism. (Debating on reporting this story because of that, but I have hopes that the author will be more hands on and change most of the story)
To start off with most of the names remain unchanged, Morag the witch; Stornway, a neighboring kingdom; Alanna the Princess's Maid; and Petra, Alanna's best friend. The name of this fiction is a single letter off the in game name for the story, Brigadoom. The Knight title stays the same, The Right Knight, and later in the fic an entire poem remains mostly unchanged. The other names are only slightly changed Princess Mona is Princess Fenella in this fiction, Princess Fenella's descendant is named Mona, while in DQ9 the descendant is named Simona.
The backstory, Chapters 1-8 are Original, giving Thomas a backstory of his life, which is a good start to writing. It's decent and it's good that the Author started writing in general, They'll get better in time, I can't really give a lot of criticism since I'm a beginning writer myself.
I'm spoiling further but it's basically telling the Dragon Quest 9 Plotline related to this story, the key differences.
The Hero (The Player) Finds that Princess Simona was stolen by a rogue Knight. The King tasks The Hero (Who's class is set to Minstrel for half the game) to get her back. The Player then beats the Knight who comes to his senses for kidnapping the wrong princess, since Princess Simona was wearing Mona's necklace.
This is where the plot of the game and this fic separate, in this fic Thomas goes to find traces of where Brigadoon was be seeking out a maid, who tells him a poem, and when he arrives back in Brigadoon to slay Morag.
In the Game, The King is dissatisfied that The Hero let the Wight Knight live and tasks The Hero to slay him once and for all (even while Simona protests), so The Hero has to find traces of Brigadoom instead, and finds the maid, she gives The Hero a poem pointing them in the right direction.
They meet the Wight Knight in the Forest staring at the ruined Kingdom, and follow him as he proceeds inside. Eventually there is a cutscene where the Wight Knight confronts Morag, who told him she was the one who sealed the two of them, and that an earthquake (related to The Hero) is what awakened them. She then tries to win him over proclaiming her love, but when the Wight Knight refuses, she uses magic to freeze him in place, Since she is the one who brought him back to life as an undead. The Hero is then forced into battle, with Morag attacking them.
Once The Hero kills Morag, The Wight Knight is revealed as The Right Knight gets depressed that Mona is no longer with him, but then Princess Simona is revealed to have followed The Hero, and asks the Wight Knight for a final dance as he slowly fades away.
This story is actually expanded more upon in an additional Post-game quest, but it explains Morag's backstory and kingdom affairs rather than more about The Right Knight and Princess Mona.
