When the city noticed the obvious signs of beasts coming to knock at their doors when they didn't even have their city lord to rely on… Obviously people weren’t in the best of moods.
It was only through the power of years of conditioning-based belief that they thought they were truly safe within the confounds of the city. Everyone knew that the {Desert Beast Clans} were far stronger & numerous than their own cultivators yet there was always the thought that “our city lord can fight back” that kept them calm. If not for their city lords who came from families with rich history surviving unhindered within the desert the people of the cities would live in a constant state of fear.
Yet here they were with no city lord as he had gone to visit their ally at her wedding and to make matters even worse there were clearly beasts on the horizon. Although they couldn’t be sure why the {Desert Coyote} were using their infamous technique there; they knew what was likely to be the case though. The only thing that could make them pull out their high-level techniques would obviously be another major beast clan!
In other words it likely wouldn’t matter if those coyotes won or lost - all that would change was a different beast would gobble them up!
Quickly the streets were filled with people rushing to the various exits of the city but those remained closed in a feeble attempt to stop the beasts. Those that couldn’t get out would either fall to their knees to pray to the heavens, take the lives of their loved ones so they wouldn’t need to suffer the cruelty of the evil beasts and the last group gave in to their primal urges. In no time at all, all order collapsed within the city, as all sorts of rioters surged through the streets to leave a trail of destruction behind.
There were those who just destroyed for the sake of it yet strangely many went out their way to steal & rob even despite the likelihood they would never see tomorrow. Of course, there weren’t only physical things to steal, many forcing themselves on men or women while those who had any feelings for eachother acted on it for some comfort. Obviously there were also some who simply went on insane murder sprees in order to enact on the wrath they always held at bay till that day.
The streets quickly filled with not just physical disorder as it appeared as if the worst of humanity had come out in their final moments.
It wasn’t as if the guards didn’t want to quash the foolishness of their people but they were unable as well as unwilling to give up the manpower to do that. If they had any chance of seeing tomorrow's sun they would need each and able hand on the walls fighting against the coming menace that could arrive at any time. Afterall, for beasts like those coyotes, the distance between where the fight was to the city was but a brisk stroll.
They had already sent out a team to scout out the scene in hopes that at least one of them would be able to make it back with some information. Chances of that actually occurring were infinitesimally low - unfortunately that was a risk they were forced to make. Many brave young souls had decided to make the trip due to being quicker than those that stood at the wall making those veterans clutch their chests with closed eyes.
None of them wanted to send the brats away yet in a time like this how could they throw away their bravery as if it would get in the way? Now they could only hope with all their strained hearts that those little shits would arrive before that storm in the distance ended. Soon all the guards appeared to age by fifty years as that sandstorm stopped with no sight of those reckless fools in sight.
“... Prepare for battle…” <Guard Commander>
They all hear the old man's voice cut through their moment of silence for those kids who were gone too soon nevertheless each one heeded it. This wasn’t just due to fearing the strongest cultivator they had left - instead it could be said more due to undering that he too would rather be welcoming those rookies with open arms. Unfortunately that scene would never come to play so they could only ensure that the extra time given to them wasn’t wasted so they would be able to remember the brats as heroes years after this event passed.
A fire lit in each of the guards eyes as they quickly rushed their preparations making sure they had plenty of [Spirit Stone Canon]s across the wall. Plenty of ammunition was a given considering that the one thing they were never lacking was [Spirit Stones] especially since these cannons were basically the only thing the beasts allowed them to have. These cannons therefore were their only means of defence against the stronger creatures but also something those beasts knew about.
Even if those beasts were arrogant they weren’t stupid; there was no way that they would allow mortals to possess anything they didn’t have some kind of countermeasure again. Still, despite all being well aware of this, they had no choice other than to put their hopes in their feeble cannons that were considered ancient by those of the {Outerim}. This wasn’t the good kind of ancient - like items with an aura of antiquity - but just outdated pieces of trash.
Though somehow knowing that those kids had sacrificed their lives to give them the opportunity to be ready gave them more resolve than ever.
A few minutes went by with the guards tensely looking into the distant desert for any signs of movement in hopes they’d be able to react first. As time went by, a new hope silently began to form within their minds, a thought that perhaps those malicious beasts were happy with just the sacrifice of those scouts that bravely went out. It was a thought that disgusted all those that had it yet one they found themselves more willing to believe at time went on.
Obviously there was the chance that they were merely enjoying the pleasure of torturing them with their vicious evil methods. Perhaps they were even toying with them right now - trying to make those brave souls spill every bit of knowledge they knew - not caring if they actually told the truth as they bestowed unfathomable pain. None of those there were willing to even consider that option since the guilt would be too much to bear.
Just when tension was reaching the maximum they saw something they never could have hoped to see in their lifetime; torches burning in the distance.
To state the obvious, beasts had no reason to carry torches, while there would be no merchants or mercenaries willing to travel through the desert at night. As such there was only one group that could be meaning that problem may have solved itself without them needing to sacrifice anyone or anything! Those reinvigorated guards couldn’t help rush to open the gate, however once more that cold yet pained voice of the guard commander echoed through the walls causing cold water to be poured on their burning relief.
“Don’t let your guard down - this could be a cruel trick by the beasts.” <Guard Commander>
Although it was a cruel slap to those who regained their hope; it was a slap that they most certainly needed at that time. Once more their gazes turned steely as they gazed towards the flaming torches to see if there were any changes to the ones holding them. Thankfully for their sanity it was indeed the rookie members who had bravely rushed on ahead making them sigh out with relief.
Before they could truly open the gates in great revelry of the brats' success a new unfamiliar figure stepped in front of the men & women. This was a sight that surprised those manning the walls but this was just the beginning of their shock that was soon to become awe.
The figure in question… Well she needed no introduction as it was Midas wearing her usual opulent yet ‘frugal’ with the amount of cloth it utilised. Once more that old commander was about to speak up in order to get her to inform him what she was doing, however, soon he swallowed his swords into the back of the throat.
Somewhat in a mixture of awe & fear; he could only watch on as six silver wings erupted from Midas’ back to bring a light onto the dark desert. Those six wings flapping once to bring Midas up into the sky - catching the gaze of all those watching from within the city. At that moment everyone stopped what they were doing as the heavenly infused light coming from those wings seemed to bless each one of them with a calm faithful heart.
“There iss no need to fear about the beasstss anymore; for in my goddesss name I have purged thosse evil fiendss from the world and only assk for your loyalty in return~!” <Midas>
In a matter of seconds the entire city echoed out with a roar of approval as those with no hope found their new one. Those who were praying to the heavens found themselves answered at last by the beautiful archangel with a weird lisp. Meanwhile those sinners could only kneel in an attempt to beg for forgiveness from the beautiful heavenly entity.
This was all according to plan.
<Ohohoho~ I suppose it will be very busy in the near future… Though my hard work has only just begun~!>
END?
