I didn't mean dumb in that way. I meant it in the sense that if someone from our time went to the 1600s, they'd be seen as smart. Of course there were things I didn't understand, and I'm well aware that's how you've chosen to write it.
Well, I would disagree with that premise since a lot of the knowledge we know would need to be proven to them first. Without some unquestionable proof, most of the modern men who will find themselves in 1600 would be considered insane. And in many cases, their knowledge would be seen as lacking because they would be quite behind in languages.
