PART 7 - The Exchange Market:

“It’s time to wake up, you know?”

My eyes slowly open as a soft, female voice pulls me out of my dream. I rub my eyes and try to focus on the figure standing before me. It takes a moment for my surroundings to come into view, and a green-haired receptionist looms over me.

“Hu…uh?”

“You’ve been asleep for a while now, probably over seventeen hours.”

I groan and stretch my limbs, feeling the stiffness in my muscles from sleeping in such an awkward position. The receptionist hands me a cup of a strange yellow liquid, but the aroma instantly wakes up my senses.

“Thanks.”

I mumble, taking a sip and feeling the stimulants jolt me back to reality.

“What is this… drink?”

“It’s a magical potion that jolts you awake, or, as I affectionately refer to it, wake-up juice.”

She giggles delicately as I nod in appreciation, finishing the strange drink quickly without any further thoughts, and feeling more alert and energised. As I sit up straighter on the bed, I take a moment to gather my thoughts and remember why I came to this place in the first place.

I look out the window, expecting to see the sun, but instead, only the dark sky remains with its celestial canvas of stars. The stars twinkle brightly, their light flickering in the vast expanse of the night sky.

“Is it always night here…?”

“What a strange question. It’s always night in regions like these.”

The receptionist responds with a warm smile and a gentle, soothing tone in her voice.

“Why not head down to the lobby? We have an amazing selection of food options just waiting for you to dig in.”

I nod in response, grateful for the suggestion.

…Seventeen hours? That’s gotta be some kind of record for me.

As I make my way to the lobby, the green-haired receptionist’s words about it always being night here echo in my mind. Weird, but I guess I’ll just have to get used to it.

I step into the lobby, greeted by the comforting aroma of freshly prepared food wafting through the air.

Surprisingly, the lobby seems quite empty, or maybe it’s because I woke up at a busy time. I can’t really be sure.

I plop down at an empty table, taking in the sight of the sparse room.

“Guess I’m not the only one up at this ungodly hour…”

I remark to no one in particular, my voice echoing slightly in the quiet space.

“Morning, love. What can I get ya?”

A cheerful voice chirps from behind me. I turn to see a small, winged faery hovering near my table, a mischievous glint in its eyes.

Startled by the unexpected presence, I find myself blinking in surprise at the creature standing right in front of me.

“Uh, whatever you have, I guess?”

The faery nods enthusiastically, fluttering off to fetch whatever she can.

“I guess I’ll be staying here… for god knows how long.” I mutter to myself, the words escaping with a sigh.

The faery returns with the food, setting down a steaming plate of food before me with a flourish. If I’ve learned anything from yesterday, it’s that taste and appearance don’t always go hand in hand.

I take a tentative bite, surprised by the burst of flavour that fills my mouth. It’s actually not bad. The faery watches me expectantly, clearly pleased with herself.

As I eat, my mind wanders to the events that led me here. The suicide. I remember the overwhelming despair and hopelessness that consumed me, driving me to that pitiful state.

My thoughts ponder on until they reach the mysterious voice that granted me this new existence.

Why did they do that? What was their goal anyway—to give me such a choice that basically altered my fate?

… Dwelling on the past won’t change my present reality. If anything, it’ll just make this journey harder to bear.

As I finish my meal, I prepare myself for my first day of exploration. I remind myself that I have been given a second chance, a new beginning, and I am determined to make the most of it.

I take a deep breath, feeling the air fill my lungs, as I consciously make an effort to push aside the haunting memories of my past.

I step out the inn’s front entrance, taking in the fresh air.

“Oh wow.” I mutter to myself as I stroll through the lively village. “This place is more alive than yesterday.”

I didn’t know adults could play like children, but this place proves me wrong.

the kids, the teens, and the adults all play tag together, I assume, as they dart through the wide streets.

“Hey, watch out!”

A sudden shout jolts me out of my thoughts as a group of kids runs past, narrowly avoiding collision with me. I step back, chuckling as I watch them continue their game of tag, their laughter echoing through the streets.

“Sorry ‘bout that!” one of them calls out over their shoulder, waving apologetically before darting off again.

As I walk further in, I reach a crossroad with a huge fountain in the centre. Carriages manoeuvre around the fountain as I try to understand the words written on the sign.

As I continue my stroll, I reach a crossroad adorned with a grand fountain in the centre. Carriages navigate around it with practised ease, while pedestrians bustle about, going about their daily business.

I glance up at the signpost, squinting slightly as I try to make out the words. It’s written in a language I don’t recognise, probably the one I can magically speak. It’s strange why I can’t read it.

Okay. An upside-down V shape accompanied by two hollow boxes and a line underneath, and curved straight lines with two Z-shaped squiggles between them…

Yeah, I can’t read that.

“Guess I’ll have to rely on my instincts.” I mutter to myself, resigning myself to the fact that I’ll have to figure things out as I go along.

So, off I go, trusting my gut and hoping for the best.

After passing around about twelve different carriages and unnaturally big-breasted females, I come across a street with seemingly endless stalls and stores.

It also seems to be crowded, and the same wooden texture does seem a bit repetitive. Still, I press on.

As I navigate through the crowded street, I catch glimpses of vibrant orbs, sparkling crystals, exotic potions, and yellowish-white and indigo stones on display. The air is filled with the scent of spices and the sound of vendors haggling with customers.

I weave through the throngs of people, my gaze darting from one stall to the next as I take in the array of goods on offer. The vendors call out their offers with infectious enthusiasm, their voices blending into a cacophony of commerce.

“Step right up! Best elixirs in town! Guaranteed to cure what ails ya!”

“Rare gems and mystical artefacts! Enhance your magical abilities with our exclusive collection!”

“Step right up, adventurer! Feast your eyes on the finest wares in all the land!” Echoes a vendor’s enthusiastic voice, cutting through the bustling atmosphere of the market.

I pause, intrigued by the energetic pitch, and my attention is drawn to a stall nestled in the corner of the market square. It’s adorned with colourful banners and intricate displays, standing out amidst the sea of vendors.

I continue my stroll through the bustling market, my eyes scanning the stalls filled with an assortment of goods. Weapons, armour, and mystical artefacts gleam under the sunlight, each promising its own unique power and protection. It’s a sight to behold, and I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement coursing through me as I take it all in.

As I meander through the market, I overhear snippets of conversations about Sunstone and Moonstone, the currency of this world’s trade. It’s no wonder my yen wouldn’t work here. I’m still amazed I had any on me in the first place.

Despite my initial confusion with the unfamiliar signpost and currency, I find myself adapting quickly, seamlessly blending into the rhythm of the market. It’s as if I’ve been doing this all my life, navigating through the crowds and engaging in the age-old art of bargaining.

Amidst the hustle and bustle, I spot a stall tucked away in a corner, different from the others. There’s a sign that catches my eye—really only because it’s glowing bright green. Green’s always been my favourite colour, so naturally, I’m drawn to it like a moth to a flame.

Approaching this store, which is your small, average wooden stall, I'm greeted by a friendly merchant.

“Ah! Hello there.”

“Uhh, hello… What are you selling?”

“Oh, I don’t sell; I give away for free; the sign does say ‘Free Essentials for Those in Need’ after all.”

I chuckle nervously, scratching the back of my head.

“Oh! Right, I knew that… haha…”

“Ah, don’t worry about it.” The merchant replies with a warm smile, seemingly unfazed by my awkwardness. “It happens to the best of us. Now, let me show you what we have here.”

I nod, feeling a sense of relief at his easygoing manner. As he begins to rummage through the various items on display, my curiosity piques. Free essentials for those in need? It’s an offer too good to pass up.

“Here we go. This should help you on your journey.”

I accept the pouch eagerly, eager to see what’s inside. Opening it up, I find a potion, a map, an amulet, a steel dagger, and a pair of glowing leather gloves.

“Wow! All this?”

The merchant nods.

“Indeed sir.”

I smile brightly, something I’m not really used to.

“How can I thank you enough for all this?”

“No need for thanks, my friend. It’s the least I can do to help a fellow traveller in need. Just be sure to put those items in your inventory. Wouldn’t want them getting lost or stolen now, would we?

His words, spoken with a casual tone, abruptly bring me back to reality from the depths of my reverie. I find myself nodding in agreement, as the realisation of what he’s saying slowly sinks in.

I decide to take a different route in an attempt to save time…

Inventory.

… But, as expected, it ends up being unsuccessful.

Determined to fully understand this system, I attempt to open the main screen with the word "Inventory.”

Open Inventory.

To my surprise, I find that my attempt is successful, and the word successfully opens the desired screen.

[No Item Selected]

My inventory is empty—well, not for long, I just need to figure out how to add things to this… virtual inventory? I guess you’ll call it that.

"So, let's see... How do I add these items to my inventory?" I mutter to myself, scratching my head in confusion. "Maybe if I just... think about it? It's worked every time so far."

I focus my thoughts on the items in front of me, picturing them appearing in the inventory screen. Lo and behold, as if by magic (which, let's face it, it probably is), the items start to materialize in the virtual space before me.

"Huh, that actually worked." I marvel, a grin spreading across my face. "Guess I'm getting the hang of this after all."

I secure the items I was given into my inventory, and put on this strange amulet.

With a satisfied nod, I close the inventory screen and turn my attention back to the friendly merchant who provided me with these essential supplies.

"Thanks a lot for this. I really appreciate your help."

I say, genuinely grateful.

The merchant waves off my thanks with a smile, his eyes twinkling with kindness.

"No problem at all, my friend. Just doing what I can to help out fellow travellers like yourself."

I nod, feeling a warmth in my chest at his generosity. It's not every day you come across someone willing to offer assistance without expecting anything in return

"You take care now, and remember, if you ever find yourself in need again, don't hesitate to stop by."

"Alright, see you later."

I bid farewell to the friendly merchant, a sense of gratitude warming my chest as I turn to resume my exploration of the village.

As I take my leave from the merchant, a sense of gratitude still lingers within me, buoying my spirits as I continue down the winding streets of the village. The sights and sounds of this new world envelop me, filling me with a sense of wonder and excitement. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, a nagging curiosity tugs at the corners of my mind.

The memory of seeing "No Item Selected" in my inventory lingers, leaving me pondering what might happen if I were to choose an item.

With that, I open my inventory again and press the slot with the pouch.

Ah, so it tells you some information about the item… Interesting.

I glance up from my inventory screen and spot a peculiarly shaped building isolated in the distance. Its silhouette stands out against the backdrop of the village, its angular architecture catching my eye. The structure rises tall, with sharp edges and unusual contours that set it apart from the traditional buildings nearby.

The building’s facade is adorned with intricate carvings and embellishments, hinting at a craftsmanship beyond the ordinary.

“Eh? What’s that…”

I mutter to myself, intrigued by the mysterious building.

Without further ado, I set off toward the building, my steps quickening with excitement. As I draw closer, its angular architecture becomes more pronounced, contrasting sharply with the traditional structures nearby.

Upon reaching the entrance, I pause to take in the intricate carvings adorning the facade, marvelling at the craftsmanship displayed. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen before, and my curiosity intensifies.

“Hey there!”

A voice interrupts my thoughts, snapping me out of my reverie. I turn to see a local resident, with a friendly smile on their face.

I jump, startled by his sudden appearance.

“Oh, uh, hi!”

“Are you heading to the Public Guild Hall?”

The resident asks, gesturing towards the peculiar building.

“The what now?”

“You don’t know what it is?!”

I shake my head, feeling a bit embarrassed by my lack of knowledge about this world.

“No, sorry… Could you tell me more about it?”

“Of course! The Public Guild Hall is where adventurers like yourself come to form parties, register for quests, upgrade their gear, and even participate in special events hosted by the guild. It’s basically the heart of our village’s adventuring community.”

“Oh, gotcha.”

I nod along, pretending like I totally know what he’s talking about.

“If you’re looking to team up with others or take on some quests, that’s the place to go.”

“Thanks for letting me know. I’ll check it out.”

With a grateful nod, I bid farewell to the resident and turn my attention back to the imposing building ahead. It’s a daunting sight, but also strangely exhilarating.

This could be the start of something big, something that’ll change my future in this world.

PART 8 - Welcome to the Guild:

Pushing open the heavy wooden door of the guild hall, I’m greeted by a loud creak, almost as if the door is saying hello to me.

The scent of polished wood and ink wafts through the air, mingling with the sound of fervent discussion and the clinking of metal.

“Whoa… this place is… kinda intense.”

I whisper quietly, trying to hide my nervousness with a feeble joke, aiming to ease the tense vibe.

But the truth is, I stick out like a sore thumb among these seasoned adventurers, pretending like I belong here.

Looking around, I can’t help but admire the intricate details of the weapons, the beautiful designs on the armour, and the intense focus on studying the maps. Everyone looks so prepared for whatever comes next.

I take a moment to size up the crowd, my eyes darting from one adventurer to the next. There’s a level fifty over there, a level twenty-four across the room, and wow, someone at level eighty-nine with 879,350 HP. These guys are no joke.

And then there’s me, barely scratching the surface of this whole adventuring thing.

“Excuse me.” I mumble softly, approaching a group of guild members huddled around a table strewn with maps and swords. “Uhm… could someone point me in the direction of… well, anything really? I’m kinda new here.”

A formidable dwarf with a weathered face, his bushy eyebrows furrowed with curiosity, looks up from his map and grunts at you, exuding an aura of battle-hardened experience. He looks like he’s been through his fair share of battles, and I can’t help but feel a little intimidated.

But to my surprise, he gives me a warm smile and gestures for me to come closer.

“Don’t worry, lad. We’ve all been there. Head over to the receptionist; she’ll help you out.”

He points a thick finger in the direction of a desk across the spacious room.

“But watch out, she’s got a bit of a flirty side.”

Thankful, I head to the guild’s reception desk, following the dwarf’s directions. Approaching closer, I can’t help but be captivated by the receptionist—an enchanting elf with a graceful figure, long golden hair flowing past the desk, and eyes as green as emeralds. She greets me with a warm smile; her gaze lingers on me, tracing a slow path from my face, down to my feet, and then back up again, each movement deliberate and tantalizing. With every upward sweep, her eyes seem to drink in every detail, leaving a trail of heat in their wake.

“Um, hey. I was told to come here… for directions. I’m kinda new.”

I stutter aloud, feeling a heat rise up my neck as I meet the receptionist’s eyes. I feel embarrassed for coming off as a total rookie, which I am.

The elf receptionist’s smile widens, and a seductive glint dances in her emerald eyes as she leans forward, subtly resting her chin on her delicate hand.

“Well, well, aren’t you just the adorable newcomer?” She purrs, her voice a velvety caress like honey. “You’re in luck. I can help you with anything you need.”

Her words give me a chill, and a mix of thrill and caution rushes through me.

She’s gorgeous, no doubt about it, but there’s something about her that sets off alarm bells in the back of my mind. Maybe it’s the way she’s looking at me, like I’m some kind of… prey.

I know this feeling well—a painful reminder of past mistreatment by those who thought themselves better than me. Not as though they weren’t.

“So, uh, any tips on where to start?”

I ask, hoping to steer the conversation back to something less… unsettling.

“Are you a member of a guild? If not, consider it my dream to find the right match for someone as compelling as you.”

I blink, momentarily taken aback by her sudden change in demeanour.

“Uh, yeah, I’m not in a guild.”

“Well, then, you’re in luck. I happen to know of a guild that’s perfect for someone like you.”

“Really? And which guild would that be?”

I ask with my curiosity piqued, despite my wariness.

The receptionist giggles, making a sound like tinkling bells, and leans in closer, her breath warm against my ear.

“My daughter’s guild.” She whispers conspiratorially with a mischievous glint in her eye, as if sharing a secret.

“You have a daughter? I didn’t realise…”

I blurt out before I can stop myself, immediately regretting my lack of tact. But still… She has a daughter? It’s hard to believe, considering how youthful and vibrant she appears.

The receptionist simply chuckles at my question, nodding proudly.

“Yes, she started her own guild a few years ago. She’s quite the leader, if I do say so myself… And I happen to know they’re looking for new members. I think you’d fit right in with them.”

“Can you tell me about the guild and how I can join?”

The receptionist leans back in her chair, a pensive expression flitting across her features, hinting at hidden thoughts and mysteries.

She grins, her warmth reaching me.

“Oh, it’s easy when you’re with me~” She says with a playful tone.

“Although if you’re keen on joining, why don’t you tantalise me with a glimpse into your world? Start with your name, and I’ll be more than willing to reciprocate.”

I hesitate for a moment, unsure if I should reveal my name so easily. But her welcoming demeanour and playful banter put me at ease.

“I’m Sora Mugenshi.”

“Ah, Sora… Such a captivating name.”

Her voice purrs like silk, wrapping around my name with a seductive allure.

“And as for me…” She pauses, her lips curving into a playful smile as she leans in closer, her breath brushing against my ear like a whispered promise. “… I go by Aurelia Starlight.”

“Aurelia Starlight…” I repeat, testing the name on my tongue. “It suits you.”

She chuckles; the sound is a siren’s melody to my ears.

"Thank you, Sora. Now, indulge me. Where do you come from?"

“Um, well, I’m actually not from around here. I ended up here because of… a couple of individuals who escorted me here.”

I admit, feeling a bit awkward about revealing my circumstances.

She leans back in her chair, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

“Well, lucky for you, Sora, your adventure is just beginning. How would you like to take a glimpse into the heart of our world?”

“Your world?” I ask, curiosity piqued. “What do you mean by that?”

Aurelia grins, her expression playful yet enigmatic.

“I mean the guild, of course. Specifically, my daughter’s private guild.”

“Private guild? I didn’t realise there were different types.”

“Oh, indeed, there are. This grand structure you’re in is the guild hall. But within this hub of activity lie smaller, more exclusive guilds, each with its own unique culture and purpose.”

“That makes more sense.”

"Well. Enough stalling.” Aurelia gestures for me to follow her, and I trail close behind as we exit the guild hall.

“Hey… Why don’t you… hold my hand?” I shoot Aurelia a puzzled glance, unsure of her sudden request. But before I can question her further, she locks her fingers with mine, her grip firm yet gentle.

Suddenly, I feel a warping sensation, as if I’m moving through space instantly, and before I can comprehend what’s happening, we are no longer in the guild hall. Instead, we find ourselves standing on another street; this one is less crowded, but there are large buildings on each side.

“What did you…”

“Stellar Shift. It’s a skill that basically allows me to teleport wherever I want.”

As I try to process Aurelia’s explanation of her skill, Stellar Shift, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and curiosity. The ability to teleport is not something you encounter every day (Neither are killer skeletons).

I can’t help but wonder about the extent of her powers and how she acquired such a unique skill.

“So… where exactly are we?”

“Welcome to my daughter’s private guild.”

… This is a guild? This whole street?

“No need to be surprised. Elysia is a smart and resourceful girl. And I’m proud of that. She built this entire space from scratch with her own two hands and her brilliant mind.”

“Elysia?”

“My daughter.”

“Oh… Right.”

This is truly impressive. How did she come up with the idea to create her own guild?

“Come, I’ll take you to her and attempt to persuade her to allow you to join. Your low level shouldn’t be a problem.”

I’m… not even gonna ask.

She begins walking through the street with confidence.

As we walk, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation building within me. What secrets and adventures await within Aurelia’s daughter’s guild?

“So, what’s your daughter’s guild like?” I ask, unable to contain my curiosity any longer.

“Hmmm~ I’m not really sure, she’s quite secretive about it. It makes me a bit worried, if I’m being honest… But you’re here to save the day and figure it out, right?”

I honestly can’t tell if she’s joking or being serious.

“Ah, sorry about that. But yeah, I’m here to figure things out, I guess.”

As we continue our stroll through the guild street, my eyes dart around, taking in the sights and sounds of the various buildings around us.

Each one seems to have its own unique vibe, from the boisterous laughter emanating from one to the focused intensity of another.

“So, um, Aurelia. What should I expect when we meet your daughter? Is she… strict?”

Aurelia chuckles, her laughter like a melody in the bustling street.

“Oh, Elysia? Well, let’s just say she’s got a mind of her own. But don’t worry, darling, she’s got a soft spot for charming newcomers like yourself.”

I can’t help but grin at her reassurance, though a flicker of nerves still dances in the pit of my stomach. Meeting the daughter of the enigmatic Aurelia is bound to be an interesting experience.

As we approach the main building of the guild, Aurelia’s gestures become more animated, and her words are infused with palpable enthusiasm. Her gaze sweeps over the courtyard before the entrance, and Aurelia continues to extol the virtues of her daughter’s guild.

She gestures towards the various training grounds and workshops dotted around the area, each one brimming with activity and purpose.

“Here, you’ll find state-of-the-art facilities for honing your skills and abilities. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or just starting out on your journey, there’s something here for everyone.

That’s really all I can tell you.”

As we step into the main guild building, I’m captivated by the intricate tapestries hanging on the walls and the soft glow of the chandeliers casting patterns on the polished wooden floors.

“Wow…”

The main room is bathed in warm, golden light, casting a soft glow over the polished wooden floors and intricately carved furnishings.

Weapons line the walls, gleaming with a deadly allure, while the air hums with an undercurrent of anticipation.

Aurelia guides me forward, her graceful strides matching the elegant atmosphere of the guild. I follow her lead, my senses on high alert as we approach the centre of the room.

There, amidst the array of weaponry, stands Elysia, or at least I think she is, her presence commands attention like a beacon in the night.

I swallow hard, my eyes widening at the sight of her. Elysia is every bit as stunning as Aurelia described—her long, wavy hair cascading down her back like liquid gold, her jade eyes sparkling with intelligence and mischief.

She blushes slightly, meeting my eyes with a coy smile on her lips.

“Ah, Elysia, darling! Look who I’ve brought to meet you.”

Aurelia announces, her voice filled with maternal pride.

“Mother, this is the third time this month.”

Aurelia chuckles, her laughter a soothing melody in the air.

“Well, darling, I can’t help but want to show off my charming companion.”

I can’t help but feel a pang of uncertainty at the exchange between mother and daughter. Are they always like this?

Aurelia gestures towards me, her smile is bright and inviting.

“This is Sora Mugenshi, dear. He’s new to our world, but I’m sure he’ll prove himself to be quite an asset to your guild.”

Elysia’s gaze flickers over me, assessing and appraising. There’s a glint of curiosity in her eyes, as if she’s sizing me up, trying to determine my worth. I shift uncomfortably under her scrutiny, acutely aware of my low level and lack of experience.

“Well, Sora, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I trust you’ll find our guild to your liking. We have high standards here, but I’m sure you’ll rise to the occasion.”

I bow slightly, offering a tentative smile in return.

“Thank you, Elysia. I’ll do my best to prove myself.”

Aurelia beams at us, her eyes shining with pride.

“I have no doubt you will, darling. Now, why don’t you two get acquainted while I catch up with some old friends?”

With that, she saunters off, leaving me alone with Elysia.

I turn to her, suddenly feeling the weight of her gaze like a physical presence.

“So, um, Elysia… What exactly do you expect from me?”

I try to sound confident despite the nerves gnawing at my insides.

Elysia’s lips quirk into a small smile, her eyes glinting with amusement.

“Oh, just the usual. Loyalty, dedication, and a willingness to follow orders. But don’t worry, Sora. I have a feeling you’ll fit right in.”

“Is it really that easy to join a guild?”

“Not normally, no. But if Mother is the one who brought you here, then I’ll give you a chance… So, Sora.” Elysia says, her gaze appraising as she studies me.

“What skills do you bring to the table? What can you offer our guild?”

I swallow nervously, suddenly feeling the weight of her scrutiny.

“Well, I may not be the strongest or the most experienced, but I’m determined to learn and improve. I’ll do whatever it takes to contribute to the guild’s success.”

“Determination is a valuable quality, Sora. We can work with that.”

“Where’s everyone else?”

“Follow me; I’ll show you.”

I follow Elysia as she leads me through the guild hall, my heart pounding with excitement and nerves. As we walk, she explains the different areas of the guild.

“Everyone else is probably off on their own adventures or training sessions. We’re a diverse bunch here, always pursuing our own goals but ready to come together when needed.”

I nod, trying to appear confident despite the unease churning in my stomach. Elysia’s composed demeanour is both reassuring and intimidating, and I can’t shake the feeling that there’s more to her than meets the eye.

“And as you probably already know, the whole street is the guild.”

“W-well, I hope I can find my place here among such talented people… Despite my low level…” I stammer, feeling a mix of admiration and insecurity. Elysia smiles warmly.

“Your level is irrelevant here. What truly counts is your dedication and spirit.”

Elysia affirms, emphasising the guild’s welcoming and supportive ethos.

As she says those words, I notice her right eye glow brighter before her expression slightly changes. Maybe a frown? It’s hard to say for sure. Though it quickly turns into a pleased grin.

“Simply concentrate on boosting your stats and bringing your unique flair to the guild.” She reassures me, a wistful glint in her eyes hinting at her playful side. “You’ll find your place here; I’m sure of it… Now, come, I’ll take you to your private home.”

“My private home?”

I ask, my eyes widening in surprise. Elysia nods, guiding me through the lively guild hall, until we reach a discreet door tucked away in a corner. As she opens it, I step inside to find a cosy room filled with comfortable furniture and decorations.

“This will be your sanctuary within the guild. A place where you can rest, relax, and live as if you were at home.”

Elysia explains, gesturing around the room. I’m really thankful to Elysia and the guild for accepting me so warmly.

I can’t believe how fortunate I am to have found a place like this. It truly feels like a home away from home.

“I’ll allow you to settle in, meet me back where you first found me when you’re ready. Oh, and… Welcome to the guild. I hope you’ll find your time here… fulfilling…”

Elysia smiles warmly before exiting the room, leaving me to take in the peaceful atmosphere of the sanctuary.

I begin to wander through the house, exploring each room with curiosity. From the first floor to the second, I find a seamless transition in design and decor. The first floor is cosy and inviting, with warm tones and comfortable furniture.

As I ascend to the second floor, I notice a shift in atmosphere—the rooms are bathed in natural light, creating a bright and airy feel. The walls are adorned with beautiful artwork, and the shelves are filled with books. It’s clear that every detail has been thoughtfully considered to provide a sense of tranquillity and belonging.

My heart swells with gratitude once more as I realise how lucky I am to have stumbled upon this place.

Eventually, I stumble upon the bedroom, which is a peaceful sanctuary with a large, plush bed and soft, luxurious linens. The room is elegantly decorated with calming shades of blue and cream, creating a serene and relaxing environment. Curling up in the comfy bed, I feel a wave of peace wash over me, grateful for this peaceful retreat to relax and recharge. This cosy retreat truly feels like a home away from home.

As I push open the doors to the main guild building, Elysia’s warm smile welcomes me, while other guild members bustle around.

Elysia’s warm smile is a welcome sight, easing the tension that had been building within me since our earlier conversation.

“Ah, Sora, you’re here!”

“Yeah, I’m here.”

I reply, returning her smile and offering a nod of my head in response.

Elysia’s gaze softens as she watches me, her eyes conveying a blend of sympathy and understanding in their depths.

“How are you settling in?”

“It’s… it’s fine.”

A moment of hesitation lingers as I grapple with the words, trying to convey the jumble of thoughts swirling within me. The refuge she gave me is a peaceful escape from my past, and I appreciate it.

“Would you like to join us in meeting the rest of our members?

Meeting new people who may evolve into friends or allies stirs a blend of excitement and apprehension within me. Despite the nerves, I understand that forging connections is vital for embracing my fresh start in this unfamiliar world. Honestly, I’m still uncertain about opening up and forming connections with others at this moment.

Even though I have doubts, I nod, curiosity ultimately getting the best of me.

I’m taken to a massive, elegant dining room of some sort, where a long, beautifully set table draped in a dark green fabric stretches out before me. I notice the walls adorned with captivating artwork and the soft glow of delicate crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, casting a gentle, warm glow into the soft ambience in the room.

The plush chairs beckon me to take a seat, signalling a chance to engage with the guild members already seated and perhaps anticipating my arrival. The scent of a delectable meal flows across the air, enticing my senses and making my stomach rumble with hunger.

“So… Who’s he?” An intimidating guy with obsidian-black hair asks Elysia, his intense gaze fixed on her.

“He’s our newest member. Sora Mugenshi—

“He looks weak.”

A taller, even more intimidating man with blazed crimson hair beside the black-head guy declared.

“Oh? And I assume our little chat about interrupting me has slipped your mind, Draven?”

Elysia’s welcoming grin doesn’t fade, but her voice is filled with chilling intensity and displeasure that I have never encountered before.

Draven stammers as he tries to come up with an excuse, but Elysia’s glare silences him instantly.

“As I was saying, Sora is our newest member, and I’d like you to get to know each other.”

Her gaze pivots around the entire room, speaking to all the girls and guys here, and there’s probably about ten of them.

“Hmm… Alright!”

A girl with a singular horn protruding from her forehead speaks up, breaking the tense mood that has settled over the room.

I take a step closer to Elysia.

“There’s only ten people here…? Shouldn’t there be more for a guild of this size?”

“Someone’s always busy. There are about ninety-four people in this guild. Some members are out on missions, others are taking a break, and a few are attending to personal matters. It’s common for the guild to have a fluctuating number of members present at any given time.”

I nod in response right before the horn girl approaches me with two other men.

She introduces herself as Narisa, the guild’s lead strategist. She explains that they were not expecting any new members to join today, but they are always open to welcoming new recruits.

“Well, I appreciate the warm welcome. But, uhh… who are you two?”

“That’s Teris and Yasuyoshi. They’re both experienced members of our guild. Teris is our top archer, and Yasuyoshi is a talented healer. We’re excited to have you join us.”

I smile, feeling a sense of belonging in this diverse group of adventurers. But Narisa’s voice sounds a bit threatening… Or is it just my years of bullying messing with my perception?

Elysia waves me off with a slightly wrinkled smile, making me uneasy.

As Narisa walks away, I can't shake the feeling that something isn't quite right. I glance over at Teris and Yasuyoshi, who both give me vaguely reassuring smiles.

"Don't worry, Sora. We'll take good care of you."

Teris says, patting me on the back. Despite their comforting words, I can't help but feel a sense of unease lingering in the air.

What kind of "matters" could Elysia possibly have to attend to that would make her act so strangely? And why does Narisa's presence make me feel so on edge?

… Why am I so paranoid…?

PART 8.5 - Guild Announcement:

It’s been a few days—actually, just two days—since I landed in this guild, which I now know as "Dawn of Hope."

I never imagined that becoming a part of this guild would feel like a gentle breeze on a summer day, but hey, I’m not one to shy away from pleasant surprises. Now, I find myself surrounded by a lively group of companions, offering endless conversations and moments of pure enjoyment.

I get out of bed and head downstairs, drawn by the warmth of the morning sun. To my surprise, I find Elysia waiting for me in the dining room.

“Good morning, sleepyhead.”

Elysia’s eyes light up with a warm smile, radiating a sense of comfort as I settle into the chair opposite her.

“What are you doing here?”

“I just wanted to see you…”

"Really? Are you sure you don’t have any ulterior motives?” I ask, raising an eyebrow sceptically.”

I say, eliciting a playful eye roll from Elysia.

“Okay, maybe I do… I came here to share some exciting news with you. I’m planning on taking you to a dungeon that I aim to conquer.”

“I’m sorry, what?”

Elysia’s laughter fills the room as she jumps to her feet, gesturing for me to follow her.

“You seem like you’ve never been in a dungeon or even know what one is, so this’ll be a great chance for you to comprehend what it’s like to be in one.”

Am I really that see-through?

“A-ah, right…”

“Don’t be nervous… we’ll take care of you…”

Elysia’s eyes fell as she spoke those words, her golden hair wrapping around her shoulders like a protective shield.

“S-so, whose coming with? And what should I bring?”

My eyes pivot towards hers as she focuses her gaze on me. She stares at me for a whole half-minute, her fingers hovering as if she’s typing on an imperceptible keypad, before the same translucent screen appears before me. A guild announcement.

« GUILD ANNOUNCEMENT »
« FROM ELYSIA STARLIGHT »

“As your leader, I have decided to guide Sora Mugenshi, our newest member, into a dungeon for conquest. Your participation in this endeavour is welcome; more attendees will strengthen our team, after all, so feel free to join. Furthermore, this will be a great time to witness and assess his strengths and weaknesses, as well as showcase our guild’s unity and teamwork.

Sincerely, Elysia Starlight.”

Well, this is interesting, to say the least. I no longer have a choice but to participate in this dungeon conquest with the guild.

“Whoever shows up is who’s coming, and as for what you should bring… It doesn’t matter.”

“Should’ve expected that…”

I say as I rise from my seat and step closer to Elysia, who smiles at me before stepping out of the room.

A dungeon, huh…? I wonder how hard it’ll be; it’s honestly pretty nerve-wracking to think about. When I imagine a dungeon, I think of cellars, prisons, and overall dark places, which makes me question how one can even defeat a place like that. But I guess I’ll find out soon enough due to a certain someone.

Stepping out of my home, I follow Elysia down the street. Normally, she’d take me to the main building, but this time she’s brought me to a vast meeting room. There’s this massive table in the middle, like the ones you see in movies. It’s an ellipse shape, made of wood, and surrounded by inviting chairs. The room is dimly lit, with a large board at one end.

Elysia gestures for me to sit, and I see a few friendly faces already occupying the chairs.

“So he’s Sora, huh?”

I turn my gaze to a petite male with silver hair, resting his elbow indifferently on the table as he studies me with piercing blue eyes.

“Yeah… that’s me.”

He’s clothed in a tunic of deep azure, adorned with intricate gold embroidery depicting the emblem of ‘Dawn of Hope’ across the chest. The fabric drapes elegantly over his lithe frame, accentuating his slender build while providing ample freedom of movement.

Despite the solemnity of his gaze and the air of mystery that surrounds him, there’s a quiet confidence in the way he carries himself.

I feel a little uneasy with his intense stare, but Elysia interrupts by clearing her throat and turning the focus to herself.

“Kakushi Tobira, you’re scaring him—

“I recall asking you to address me as Alden.”

Tobira’s, no, Alden’s, piercing gaze shifts over to Elysia as his low, intense words carry throughout the area.

“Right… Sorry, Alden. Can we please get on with the task at hand?”

“I’m not objecting.”

Everyone around the room nods and whispers to each other, while I don’t really know what to make of Alden. He appears daunting and honestly unworthy of any opposition, and it makes me wonder what his role is in this guild and what kind of power he holds over the others.

“… I see, so. As you probably noticed in the announcement I made earlier, we’re going to guide Sora Mugenshi into a dungeon for conquest.”

“What? He’s incapable of doing it himself?”

A man, undeserving of any description, snickers as he rests his feet on the desk like an arrogant slob. Though Elysia silences him with a single glare before clearing her throat.

“Ahem… Let’s not underestimate Sora just yet. He may surprise us all with his abilities once we’re inside the dungeon.”

“Where and what even is the dungeon you’re taking us to.”

A purple-haired woman with a curious expression interjects. Her voice is elegant, deep, and soothing; she’s clad in a similar attire to Alden, but with a touch of regality that sets her apart.

“Well—

“She’s planning on taking us to a moderate-level dungeon. It’s most likely the one past the Magmatic Cavern. Am I wrong?”

Alden keeps his gaze fixed on Elysia as he says those words, as if he is challenging her to confirm his suspicions.

Elysia praises him with a knowing smile.

“You catch on quickly, Alden. The dungeon I have in mind is indeed moderate-level and past the Magmatic Cavern.”

How did he know? Elysia didn’t say anything that could reveal it, did she? Or maybe she told him beforehand?

“Alden, you’re too observant. You truly learned that from a few minor gestures?”

The woman with purple hair giggled gently, her amused eyes glimmering as she looked at him.

“It actually felt quite simple, to be honest. I’m sure the average person could figure that out if they actually tried.”

“Not all of us have your superbrain, genius.”

The purple-haired woman jokes as Alden downplays his own perceptiveness.

“Well, you will never turn out as exceptional as myself if you continually message that boyfriend of yours, even while in meetings.”

“—Wha…! You knew… Jeez.”

“Naturally, I do.”

“Can we get back on track now? And Violet, stop messaging people during a gathering.”

Violet, the woman with vibrant purple hair, rolled her eyes playfully before focusing back on the task at hand.

From what I can understand, one can only see their screen. I couldn’t see Elysia’s screen interface when she made the announcement to everyone while in my home. From here, it appears that only Alden, not the person seated beside Violet, is aware that she’s on her interface.

“As I was saying, we are going to that dungeon.”

“But isn’t it a level 22 dungeon? Wouldn’t that be a difficult start for Sacri—Sora? Wouldn’t the one near the amethyst grove be a better start?”

An orange-haired cat-girl speaks with a thoughtful expression.

“Ember, you know we can’t, right?”

“Well, yeah, I guess.”

Ember shrugged, her ears twitching slightly as she considered the options. She then mumbles something before looking at me like she’s about to pounce on me.

“Sacrifi—

Before she can finish speaking, two tendrils of light instantly cover her mouth and neck, preventing her from saying anything further. The tendrils seemingly originate from below the table where we’re all seated, wrapping around Ember’s body and restricting her movements and voice.

“Ember… Why don’t you be silent for once.”

Elysia says deeply, her eyes sharp as she stares at the restrained cat-girl. I get it now: Elysia must have some skill that allows her to control these light tendrils. But why would she use it on Ember?

Why didn’t she let her finish?

The tendrils let her go before retreating to wherever they came from. Ember collapses to the ground, gasping for air and trembling with fear as she struggles to regain her composure.

“S-sorry… Elysia…” She stammers, her voice barely above a whisper.

Elysia’s expression softens as she reaches out a hand to help Ember up, a hint of guilt flashing in her eyes.

“It’s fine; I may have gone a bit too far…”

“Uhm, what just happened?”

I ask cautiously, feeling a mix of curiosity and unease. Elysia’s gaze lingers on me for a moment before she finally speaks.

“I simply converged a portion of the light around us into tendrils that silenced Ember… Anyway, we’ve gone off track too much; allow me to finish speaking before you all utter a word. If any of you do, there will be consequences… And they will be more serious than the one I just imposed on Ember.”

Elysia’s authoritative tone, filled with a commanding presence and an undertone of unwavering determination, silences us all, leaving a palpable tension hanging in the air.

She explains the dungeon as if I’m just starting to learn how to walk. She starts explaining all the details of the dungeon we’re about to explore, using a light show to make it clearer. Hint: It involves magma and heat.

A gleam of excitement lights up her eyes as she vividly describes the obstacles ahead, which sends a chill through me as a sense of impending dread slowly envelops my body.

After she’s done explaining everything, I can’t help but wonder if we’re really ready for the mysterious challenges in this dungeon.

“Do you think you’re ready for this, Sora?”

“No—

“Great! Then let’s get started!”

But I said no… Why did she cut me off so quickly? Is she that eager to force me into this? I can’t help but wonder why she’s so insistent on pushing me into something I clearly haven’t decided.

I sigh as I get up from my seat, and the rest follow as Elysia gives them a suspicious gaze. But why? Something is definitely going on here… Or are they just playing an evil prank on me? ... But what would I know?

Really, only time will tell… and I’m honestly not prepared for when it will.
