- Shari -
So we set out for the adventurer's barracks which are located close to the guild.
If I remember right Jacob said it was near the center in the east.
It should be an important building and like this easy to find.
Nonetheless, it makes me a bit uneasy that this place is something like a wolf's lair for me, with all those adventurers in there.
Yet, a wolf’s lair would be dinner to Liqu.
And to be honest, those people there are not much more, if I had to bet.
So I find the guild without problems.
It is not a pompous building, but spacious.
One can already see from the outside that there is quite some business going on inside because of the many people coming and going.
The hall is obviously large enough that they fit in.
I decide to put my mask on, trying not to rub the powder off, so that I can still take it off if I have no other choice but to "confirm" my identity.
But I like the design and it feels better that I don't always have to pull the hood so far over my face.
Also, I wear my hair now which I quickly put on in a quiet sideway.
Before, I had no urge to trigger Tamarah with something like this.
Disguised like this I ask around.
Naturally, the responses were a little suspicious of me, but in the end, I managed to find the barracks.
However, before I can enter I get stopped.
"I'm sorry, but this place is owned by the guild and to non-members, the entrance is restricted." (doorman)
In front of me is a big man that seems to guard the door.
It was to be expected that there would be some kind of security to ensure that the stuff of the residents is left untouched.
After all, this town has a significant crime rate.
It would be bad if an adventurer goes out on a stroll and his sword is gone when he comes back.
This town's economy is based on the adventurers traveling into the Evergrove, so it won't do if they get all robbed.
"We are friends of Jacob and wanted to visit him. Isn't that alright?" (Shari)
"Hm, this is unusual, but should be fine. However, I need first his confirmation before you can come in. Could you give me your names?" (doorman)
"It's Shari and this is Liqu. He should be very interested." (Shari)
"Greg! Go and ask Jacob if he knows a Shari and... Liqu." (doorman)
Yes, I know this is an odd name, but I am surely not going to ask her how she came up with it.
We wait a little while and soon Jacob comes running at us.
He looks quite pale.
I'm a little glad now about this mask because my smile would surely give me away even with the powder.
"What are you doing here? Why did you come? And why those masks? And what is that on your head?!" (Jacob)
"Hair! It's called hair! My hair! Or at least something that resembles it. But this doesn't matter. You are in trouble my friend." (Shari)
"I know I'm in trouble! You are here!" (Jacob)
"Maybe we should continue this discussion inside." (Shari)
"Sigh! Fine. Let me just clear this and inform the others." (Jacob)
He confirms our identity with the guards, and soon we can head inside.
"Am I right that you don't just want to talk with me alone?" (Jacob)
"Partly, there are also other small things but some topics concern your whole group." (Shari)
"Well, in this case, I will need to fetch Myra out of the women's dorms first." (Jacob)
It soothes me that Myra doesn't have to share a room with two guys.
He leaves us standing in front of his room's door.
Before we draw too much attention, I decide to enter.
And there is Chris.
"Hello, Chris! Long time no see." (Shari)
He lies in the bed, yet his wound seems to have gotten better as his free chest indicates.
"It seems you are better now." (Shari)
"Urgh, what the hell does that mean? Is there any reason why you keep pestering our group, or do you intend to attack and feed on us?" (Chris)
"Well, if he insists." (Liqu)
"No Liqu, you aren't going to eat anyone here!" (Shari)
"But I'm not full!" (Liqu)
"You will endure it for now." (Shari)
I'm already regretting that I bought nothing at a stall.
She is annoying when she's hungry.
A short time later Jacob and Myra enter.
"Myra!!!" (Liqu)
In a blink, Liqu rushes past me and has Myra in her grip, before anyone can do something.
"Kyaahh!" (Myra)
"Ah; my friend!" (Liqu)
And she's squeezing her tightly.
"YOU! Urghh." (Chris)
Myra is once again in a paralyzed state, where she ceases all movement.
Chris jumps up but needs to hold his not completely cured wound.
And Jacob is at a loss regarding what he should do while Liqu is holding his comrade as she does and because of that shouldn't be angered.
"Liqu, stop! How many times do I have to tell you to stop this?" (Shari)
"But I'm just hugging my friend. Wouldn't it be good if she would get accustomed? I'm just helping her." (Liqu)
"You! Will! Stop! This! Now!" (Shari)
"Fine! Then next time, Myra!" (Liqu)
She gives her one last squeeze and then lets go of her body.
The poor girl trembles all over and is obviously troubled to calm down but is still unable to speak and because of this stays quiet.
"Damnit! Can you please tell us what you want here? And what is with your head?" (Chris)
Thank you for the cue, Chris.
"This is my old hair. Maybe not exactly the same, but similar. I bought it at this outfitting store. You know where you can buy this handy make-up powder. You wouldn't believe it. It was fascinating. It was only two silver and fifty copper and they even went twenty copper down. I mean isn't this crazy? I was so sure it was three silver." (Shari)
It is at least a pleasure to see his distressed face when he realizes what I am implying here.
That might be worth fifty copper on its own.
"You know it was all a little chaotic at this day and we had no savings. I really needed a bit to pay for some medicine for Chris' wound before the shops were all closing." (Jacob)
"And so you thought: 'Let's scam the slime! It won't notice! The stupid thing hasn't even a brain!' Am I right?" (Shari)
"We were in dire need and I didn't want to raise your anger before we get into the town." (Jacob)
"As I see it you owe me something. The good thing is here is your chance. I want to hire you!" (Shari)
"Hiring? A slime? You've got to be kidding us!" (Chris)
"Thanks for your input Chris, but this is not just about you and it's an absolutely serious offer. As long you respond in the right way." (Shari)
"What is this about?" (Jacob)
"I've got an order from Tamarah to bring her voidstone from the mine. A fairly good one that is. Yet, this would require quite some hard work to dig them out and also to transport them. And as you might've guessed, both of us lack something essential for this venture. Muscle strength." (Shari)
I free my arm from the sleeve and plunge with my other hand through it while saying this to emphasize my point.
"And so you intent that we do all the heavy work?" (Jacob)
"First, without us, there is no job at all. Also, it's not like we would do nothing. I was told the way is dangerous and you know pretty well, that you don't have to fear any monsters when we are with you." (Shari)
"Tsk; that was a good one." (Chris)
"Any other monsters. Satisfied Chris? You know, I hate it to refer to myself like this." (Shari)
"Why us?" (Myra)
It seems Myra managed to find her voice again.
"Because Chris's smoldering hate is so appealing to me. Or it could be more about the fact that you lot are the only ones who know about us. And like this, you are also the only ones I can let accompany us, without having to fear that our throats get cut the moment we lower our guard. As negligible as that might be for us." (Shari)
"So you want that we follow you to mine voidstone and then we have to carry it back to the town." (Jacob)
"Yes! It is like this. Things being like this, I think three to two is fair. Naturally three for us. We got the job in, and aside from the monsters on the way, there's another reason why you'd be completely screwed without our help." (Shari)
"And why is this?" (Jacob)
"The mine we are heading to is abandoned, deserted, empty. You won't find any significant amounts of voidstone there. You would just end up digging holes at random." (Shari)
"So why should we go then in the first place? What's the difference?" (Jacob)
"I was coming to this. As I said, you won't be able to find anything on your own. However, out of my own unwanted experience, I can tell you that slimes have a distressingly detailed track of what they dissolve. Or in other words, I know what and how much is inside that what I take in. And Liqu in this regard is a natural. So we can tell where the concentration does increase." (Shari)
"That sounds reasonable, but about how much are we talking?" (Jacob)
"Four silver per kilo at an upper limit of thirty, given the purity of the stones is acceptable. I don't need to say what it would mean for you if we could get full payment. You might know better what Tamarah is able to pay. If you agree on your share that is." (Shari)
At least Myra stays mouth-agape. Jacob looks pretty tempted and Chris seems at least to balance hate and benefit in mind.
"I am very sure that this is more than you would earn in general and also at a much lower risk, as we cannot carry the stones by ourselves and you can be like this sure that your survival will have priority to us." (Shari)
I get at least an exaggerated nod from Liqu.
From Chris, it’s more of a death glare conveying he doesn’t believe a single word I say.
"Can you give us a moment?" (Jacob)
"Fine." (Shari)
We leave the room and wait outside.
It is quite clear what happens.
Jacob should vote for my proposal since it is simply a good offer with nearly no risk and they have no savings as he just admitted.
Chris is vehemently protesting against working together with the evil monsters.
And Myra might be extremely scared of Liqu, yet I think she is now in a state where she can endure her presence without fearing death every second.
This way I should have two votes on my side, as long Chris cannot influence her.
And when Myra goes he will eventually give in as well.
After a while, the door opens.
"We have discussed and decided to accept your offer." (Jacob)
What did I say?
"Great to hear. By the way, procuring the mining tools is your duty. I’ll see this as collecting my debt." (Shari)
"Sigh, fine. Was that all or is there anything else?" (Jacob)
"Good that you ask. There is one place, I need you to accompany us there first." (Shari)
"Why? Where is this place?" (Jacob)
"Quite close. We are going now to the guild where you will help us to register me and Liqu as adventurers." (Shari)
"What?!!" (Jacob)
Shari getting to organize things like this must be very fun for her since she gets to order people around and not have them run away screaming or trying to kill her in her sleep
It's certainly the highlight of her week. Yet on the other side, her week was rather mediocre.
@expentio At least she’s making progress on her goals!
@expentio
Her week was way more interesting than any week I had have in my life.
"Quite close. We are going now to the guild where you will help us to register me and Liqu as adventurers." (Shari)
"What?!!" (Jacob/Chris/Myra)
@expentio, I will not say that this is an unreasonable banality, I will believe you and express the hope that you will not disappoint me in the next chapter.
It has some reasons. From hiding in plain sight, to getting the better paying jobs, and a third reason which will help them in society.
Why posting this twice?
But what if a person with some developed feeling comes across and just sees that Shari and Liqu are too unusual? (By the way, this was already with a woman in a raincoat, Shari does not learn life lessons?)
What is it about advanced human skills?
What does she know about magic devices, including hidden ones?
What legend is she preparing about her origin?
And she is really ready in case of failure to endanger the members of the guild, for me this is a shameless and very INHUMANESS act.
In general, at the moment, going to the guild is, if not dangerous, then a harmful gamble, the risk from which is much greater than the possible benefit that it can POTENTIALLY bring.
Or did you decide that Shari's mind will slowly transform into a predatory-adventurous mind?
Of course, if you decide that Shari's blood and brains are boiling now, then okay, let him go into his madness, but only then even without unnatural luck and luck.
@torvn77 As far as it goes for Shari's common sense there are no magical identification techniques in this world. All that is known are the four basic elements + life.
She doesn't have to tell an elaborate tale. The guild is foremost an organization which distributes orders. They don't have the authority to force her to do anything like identifying herself. Also, they take almost everyone who is willing to risk his life in this town. If it starts to go bad she can just leave and they can't stop her. All these concerns would also apply outside the guild in the city if something goes wrong. Shari intends to retreat in any case.
The point that she has no identification is the main reason she goes. There is no ID card in this world for commoners. But adventurers get something like this so that business contacts can verify who they get. With this, she can in a control show this for identification. In the long run, this is more advantageous.
Уou choose a barren path, right in the last chapter you described voidstone, which prevents the guild from sewing several such stones into the upholstery of a chair and offering the candidate a network for paperwork.
You can also make a more cunning test, for example, make several identical items with elements from voidstone and one item from an ordinary stone, for people such items will be the same, but the monster will always choose an ordinary item and strongly refuse to take items from voidstone.
Still take a stone slab and lay out a part of the image voidstone, a person will see one thing, and a monster another.
And now you will assure me that a society in which everyone, even to the point of panic, is afraid of monsters has not taken such a simple measure of protection. And this with a huge level of fear, bordering on panic, in relation to monsters, which you described in your work.
Where is the elementary logic?
If people are so afraid of monsters, then they must sprinkle the whole area with this voidstone in order to scare away AND identify monsters that are near.
Well, or at least place it in the fence of the village. This, by the way, may well explain why monsters do not come to the city along the bottom of the river.
Why posting this twice?
Apparently this is a bug caused by the loss of connection to the Internet.
@torvn77 The elementary logic here is that there are no (known) imposter monsters. Shari explained before, monsters are mutations of animals, living in the wilderness. Not terribly deceiving. Why would they conduct monster tests? All that money, at an organization which is in the first place for business. At most there are "rumors" about a slime which took the shape of a girl. Not verified and very new, not warranting any actions against the creatures believed to not even be capable of simple logic.

"God; why do we need to do this stupid subjugation-quest, here in the nowhere?
I mean "slimes"! Who cares if we kill them here or not?"
Said one of them. A young man with a sword on his hip and a chainmail.
Does he always wear that attire?
Looks rather uncomfortable to me always carrying this heavy of a burden.
"You know that, if we don’t get them here, they will gather and inevitably draw to the important places."
in general, some protection of critical points should be provided.
In addition, the test with objects made from the stone of the void can be used not to identify monsters, but to identify people with magical abilities.
If it starts to go bad she can just leave and they can't stop her.
That is, Shari admits that she will have to leave the guild with a fight.
I believe she can do it, but how does that fit with the preservation of humanity, which is her primary concern?
In my opinion, doing what may end in the massacre of people without a great need to do it is more inhuman than hiding or living in the forest for a while.
You write as if she does not care about the lives of other people and she is ready to bring them to the altar of her desires.
@torvn77 Yes, slimes are like rats. There is absolutely no need to do measures in special buildings. With important places they meant the fields. Slimes devour much stuff. They can do terrible damage there. The walls are guarded. By humans. But voidstone is very expensive and hard to work with.
And yes, they do this with identifying mages. Then you know that the other one has magical abilities. That is nothing bad for the person in question. And like I said, they can't enforce this.
@torvn77 No, I meant if they start asking questions she can just leave and they can't follow up on this. Naturally she doesn't want to get exposed. But you are giving too much credit to those soldiers of fortune in the guild. They aren't that inquisitive.
And what do you mean with a while? As you describe it, this would be forever because your reasons won't go away. But that lifestyle is nothing Shari wants. She tries desperately to find a way to live a human life. Not that of an animal in the wilds. You can find that ruthless and reckless, but she hopes it will work out.
And what do you mean with a while?
I did not understand what time you are talking about, there is some kind of translation error.
In principle, from the point of view of communication, the best thing would be if you wrote in your German, and I would write in my Russian, and then we would translate each other into our own language using a google translator.
As you describe it, this would be forever because your reasons won't go away.
I do not mean that she waited long in the forest for the guards at the city gates and the guards to stop doing these or those security checks.
I mean there are a few things she has to do before going to town:
1) Ask Jacobs to make a map of the city indicating the features of certain places and learn it by heart.
2) To go with Jacob's group on assignments so that Liqu mastered the basics of communicating with other people and, for example, missed everything he liked in public places, or, alternatively, learned to hide his reaction to certain events.
4) Develop your personal skills in using your body,
who was she going to work in the city if she still can't even carve certain things from wood?
Secondly, it would be useful to learn how to change your appearance and even shape in order to disguise yourself as different people and objects.
5) Collect as much information as possible about the city.
6) Having changed your appearance from the main to the auxiliary, enter the city for its preliminary study.
7) Before your arrival, learn as much as possible about the inhabitants of the city and the villages surrounding the city, if possible, make acquaintances with the maximum number of people.
You must understand that, unlike a person, her life in the forest is easy and relatively safe and she can devote enough time to achieving all these goals, and most likely all this preparation will take no more than six months.
@torvn77 First, there are just very few people and buildings outside the city, because it's still in the killer forest.
More information wouldn't really help with communicating in practice.
They can't disguise as different people and objects. They will still be slime. Alternating the basic shape won't change that. They can't alternate color or make them hard objects.
Why should Jacob's group ever communicate again with them if they stay outside? They aren't this close. It's not the kind of relationship were they would seek them out on their own.
They can't learn anything about inside the town if they don't go there. With what kind of skill you expect Shari to have would that be possible?
She might take more time to educate Liqu, but she is still reluctant about their relationship.
It seems you're expecting them to behave in a very specific way, which didn't happen and isn't really how the characters are. Shari is described as quite straightforward and offensive if it's about her goals. Holing up in the forest for months is not who she is. There was a chance to get in the town and she jumped up on it. Now there is a chance to get an guild ID and she takes it.
These are simply the character's decisions. They don't have to be the best, but they played out like this and not in another way and aren't illogical from their point of view.
First, there are just very few people and buildings outside the city, because it's still in the killer forest.
Aber sie sind es trotzdem.
Shari is described as quite straightforward and offensive if it's about her goals.
@torvn77 The sentences aren't always quite right.
"Zum Beispiel werden Menschen nicht sofort auf eine transparente Schachtel achten, die mit einem Lappen in einer dunklen Ecke bedeckt ist." It's not clear what that shall tell. That she shall disguise in form of a giant box of slime? That doesn't make sense. And it wouldn't work. The possibilities to form themselves are rather limited. I believe the disguise Shari has going at the moment is the best that is possible. If this doesn't work they will get exposed.
Shari can't talk about the town if there is nobody to talk outside. And Jacob's group they have to seek out as otherwise they would avoid them if there is no benefit. To anyone else they are just suspicious people.
I don't know what the point with the loan sharks shall tell. It doesn't really apply to the situation. Shari just doesn't want to sleep in the forest. She detests the idea of living like an animal. And she wants fast results, so she pursues her plans.
Jacob is quite deep in this. Many have seen at this point that they're associated. So if Shari messes up he will be next on the list. Better accompanying them to make sure that the guild still stands when he goes there next time. Also, he is maybe a little afraid and he needs that money from the order. Enough reasons to comply.
I don't know what else is to argue about the plot. Shari made this decision and is with this in character. What happened won't change.
I don't know what the point with the loan sharks shall tell. It doesn't really apply to the situation.
That she shall disguise in form of a giant box of slime?
That doesn't make sense.
So if Shari messes up he will be next on the list.
I don't know what else is to argue about the plot. Shari made this decision and is with this in character. What happened won't change.
@torvn77 I think we have different views on the subject.
I mean, Shari didn't think the same you do. There is stuff which simply didn't occur to her, like transforming into a pet. Even then, such ventures might end bad as well if this other disguise gets exposed. I don't see how they would get out of it if any disguise tey takes might get exposed (don't forget they leave slime traces while running). They are also big and the shining core is exposing. A dog in this size wouldn't work. Making themselves smaller means less combat potential (nothing Liqu would agree to). Since Jacob really needed the money he went with them.
You have quite the bad perception of her, just for going into the town. The time was good back then. They had funds, a working disguise with the cloaks (who knows when they'd destroyed), got the powder (don't forget here that much stuff won't work as coverage if it has the ability to drench), and they met Jacob's group, who had no real reason to meet them ever again after that on their own and no way to contact them.
So after that she would have been otherwise, alone with dwindling ressources. At that time it appeared to Shari like the best chance she gets. I wouldn't say it's necessarily a bad trait to make use of her chances. In the end there is always a risk no matter what she does.
You know, the story certainly won't end with a terrible faith for Shari. Just to warn you.
Ps: I know that game. Didn't play it myself, but we should have it lying around here somewhere. (No idea why you send it though)
