When the car finally stopped, Hiyori gulped loudly, realizing where they were at. Looking through the windshield after they had just parked, she felt a shiver run through her.
"A cemetery?" she asked, turning her head towards Everlong.
"Yep," he answered, already getting out of the car.
"Why?" she followed him hurriedly, watching as he opened up the trunk and got shovels out of it, passing one onto her.
"I told you, I'm going to dig up a few things about her." Everlong continued, letting the shovel rest on his shoulder. "Let's go!" he nodded with his head, heading towards the cemetery.
"But-!" Hiyori gasped, catching up with quick steps and turning her head left and right continuously, afraid someone was going to spot them.
"Don't worry, she wasn't cremated. Her parents were in a religious group, believing the body was going to rise when the rapture came. So she was buried intact! They did not believe their daughter committed suicide because of their teachings; they even sued the school, but it was settled before going to court." he explained calmly, scanning the headstones with a flashlight in his other hand.
"I wasn't going to ask you about that! This is grave robbing… or worse!" she yelped in a panicky voice.
"Nah!" Everlong laughed. "It is my national privilege."
"What?" Hiyori stumbled, almost falling over, not understanding a word he was saying right now.
"The Albionian National Museum has the greatest collection of treasures from around the world," Everlong said while stopping at a grave that had 'Fukui Yukari' etched onto its headstone. "I'm doing what my people are best at!" he winked at her as he stabbed the edge of his shovel into the ground and got to work with no reservations. "Come! With the two of us, we should finish quicker."
"Damn… I am going to be cursed a second time, aren't I?" Hiyori groaned, feeling very weird at the moment. On one hand, she was excited. Then again, she was disgusted by what they were doing. Yet, despite it all, she started digging. "She also has no treasure buried with her… I would bet anything on it... So you won't get anything to sell to a museum. I'm 100% sure of that!"
"Oh!" Everlong stopped, looking at Hiyori and then at the grave. "I see. Then this is really grave robbing! Oh well, " Everlong shrugged, getting back at it with great vigor, holding a teasing smile.
"You are sick…" she clicked her tongue, seeing his nonchalant expression.
"Shit, you saw my porn mag collection?"
"Hah!" Hiyori laughed out, unable to hold back the impulse. For some reason, she found herself way more relaxed than she should be. "Okay, okay, now I am getting really interested!"
"In me or in my history?" he raised his eyebrows at her while asking.
"Both," she answered with a much quieter voice and with a crimson blush creeping up on her face.
"Oh!" Everlong stopped again, this time for real. "You got me. I was not expecting an honest answer."
"..." Hiyori simply lowered her head more, feeling it turning even redder now. Thankfully, it was dark and hard to see it out here, where no light was shining on them. Plus, concentrating on the digging, she did not have to look up at his face at that moment. In the end, they just focused on the digging, and when they finally hit the coffin with a loud thud, Everlong cleared the rest of the dirt, opening it there and then unceremoniously.
"Ugh…" Hiyori grunted, taking a few steps back, covering her mouth and nose, watching the mummified corpse of the girl exposed to the element. Her skin was already dried out, stuck to her bones, turning into a mixed color between green and gray. The clothes she was buried with were already rotted away, hanging on in pieces all over the almost skeletal-looking body. The weird smell that came out from the coffin, mixing with the scent of freshly upturned dirt, was also something she was not used to at all, finally making her retch. "Does she have any reaction?" she asked, holding back her dinner, gulping it back multiple times, trying to remain composed and thinking about her accursed follower instead.
"That is the interesting part~!" Everlong smiled, clearly happy with her intuition to ask a question like that. "She didn't even come into the cemetery. She stayed in the car. You see if she was the first victim of a demon... that bastard would have no issue coming in and taking a look. No, they would even enjoy it. But avoiding facing someone's earthly remains? It points me in the direction that good old Yukari is our demon itself. Even after demonification, the dead don't like to face their previous mortality." He explained while crouching down, picking out a pocket knife, cutting off some strands of hair and one of the pinky fingers from the corpse. While Hiyori watched, he put them into a small, transparent zip bag, pocketing them. "Great! We're done!" he slammed down the coffin's lid and pulled himself out before starting to cover the hole back up.
"That's it?" Hiyori blinked her eyes rapidly, but she was also happy that she did not have to do anything weird or look at the mummified girl for too long.
"Yeah! It is best to do things quickly. I may joke around, but opening up graves can aggravate the lingering spirits in the vicinity." he answered, making her flinch. "Cemeteries are the domain of the dead, you see. We are only visitors, and I only need these because I'm going to bring them to an expert friend of mine to help us out!" Everlong continued, quickly throwing the dug-out dirt back onto the old coffin.
"So… are we now sure that my demon is… she?" Hiyori muttered after shaking her head, expelling her worries as best as she could, looking down at the hole with eyes that were not friendly at all. Every time Everlong threw dirt on it, she felt a kind of pleasant satisfaction wash through her.
"Mmmm…" He stopped for a brief moment, leaning on his shovel, thinking. "90%. If you ask me. I am basing it on the fact that it refused to come in here, which is really suspicious. There could be other reasons, like plots that are blessed and would hurt a being like it is now... but I'm fairly certain that is not the case."
"Then why not just burn it?" she asked, with a much colder voice now, still watching the coffin as it was being reburied by Everlong.
"We could. We may even do that later." He nodded, explaining it patiently, like a teacher. "But we can't do it willy-nilly. There are strict requirements to do something like that successfully. Now, I have more clues on my hand. For a demon like her, I know that she was from a catholic family, so I can come up with a few rituals that may work. But they need to be precise. Different religions have different ways to turn into demons and also different methods to expel or destroy those demons! One that works for a catholic one won't do shit against a rakshasi. Still, before that, I need to know some key points!" he raised his hand, showing three fingers to her. "One: The circumstances of her death. Two: Her own beliefs before death. Three: What kind of demon did she turn into? If I go and ritually destroy her remains, it may banish her for… maybe a year? A decade? A month? Who knows! But she would be back. And if you are still alive, then… oh boy, you would wish you were not!"
"Fuck…" She cursed while biting into her lips, starting to work too, and soon, the grave was refilled completely. "But… How do we know what her beliefs were? How did she die for real? And… What kind of demon is she turning into? Shit, all of these are something we have zero chance of knowing!" she despaired when the realization hit her.
"That is where you are wrong," Everlon replied, getting out a cigarette and lighting it up. Only after a deep huff did he pass it towards Hiyori. With her panic flaring up, she quickly grabbed at it, holding it towards her lips with trembling fingers.
"You sure?" she asked before taking a deep huff from it too.
"You'll see… Following me this night was the point from which you no longer can return," he told her, watching Hiyori as she blew out the smoke through her nostrils.
"I feel like I reached that point a long time ago!" She nodded while looking into his eyes, taking a deep breath. Images flashed in her head about the moment of impact as their car was pushed before the truck, striking it with full force. "What comes will come!" she slapped her face with two hands.
"Good answer!" Everlong nodded, then whispered under his breath, only audible to his own ears, "Well, she is much more promising than the previous one…"
"What was it?" Hiyori looked up at him, not understanding what he just said.
"We have a long night ahead of us, so let's go!" he smiled, dusting down his hands and heading back to the car with Hiyori in tow.
"Hey, would it be grossed out by her own finger?" she asked as she tilted her head, watching it in Everlong's pocket, getting back into her normal mood.
"Maybe. Depends on her personality. If this is hers at all!"
"Gimme!" she grinned, happily taking the little, transparent bag away from him. "If this is hers, a payback is in order! Fucking bitch!"
