For those who may not know me, I'm Monica Alvarez, formerly one of the lead writers and editors at the Los Angeles Times. It’s been a journey getting here, with years of reporting and diving deep into stories that matter. But sometimes, new doors open, and you just have to step through. With “Live, Love, Listen,” I’m excited to launch into independent writing where I can explore the stories that fascinate me most, share them with you directly, and keep the conversations rolling.
This Substack will be a mix of investigations, musings, and unique stories that I’ve always wanted to take further—many of which will be free and open to the public. Some of you may have followed my recent work at the Times, where I covered everything from the possibilities of time travel to the local lifestyle scene, diving into businesses that shape Los Angeles culture. I’ve reported on events that matter to the Los Angeles basin, and I’ve loved engaging with readers. Now, I get to do that on my own terms—and I have a lot planned.

And yes, I know some of you have probably heard of my notoriety around what others called a “conspiracy theory” about Jane Doe, who initially claimed to have experienced a baffling transformation before coming forward as Giselle Conway. Let’s just say, my investigation continues—and I’m clearing the air with an interview with Giselle herself, who’s now looking forward to sharing her journey through daily vlogs and Twitch streams. I also want to level with you all: the past few weeks have been challenging. My family’s going through a lot right now, especially my cousin, who’s navigating big life changes and a lot of uncertainty. Some mysteries don’t have clear answers—believe me, I know.
