Jing Yi smiled to himself at that. It was true that this was a little cheeky. But he didn’t regret saying it. This would bring him one step closer to finding out what was really going on. It would be a good thing for him so that he could leave sooner and find out what was going on at home and at the same time, it would also help Peng Mu. After all, if the woman he had fallen in love with was really a demon and was using him to hurt other people, then he would likely want to know, wouldn’t he? In that case, he definitely had to find out soon!

He pondered for a moment, seemingly lost in thought.

Peng Mu didn’t disturb him and just continued to eat his food. Anyway, he could imagine that bringing up his fiance always made Jing Yi a little lost in thought. That just was the way it was, right? If you loved somebody and didn’t know how they were doing, you would inevitably worry.

While Peng Mu imagined such a beautiful reason, Jing Yi was just wondering how he should continue his line of investigation. He could hardly ask if that woman had known the others right at this moment, could he?

In the end, they had just talked about how he wanted to meet her in the future. So maybe it wouldn’t be wrong to ask the question. But if Peng Mu said no, whether that was the truth or not, then he would have to stop and not ask any further or he would become suspicious. That really wouldn’t help Liu Cheng much.

In fact, just thinking of it like this, that might be the worst approach to this. After all, he had to find out as soon as possible to make sure that nobody else would be hurt. Was there no better approach?

The most important was meeting up with the demon. After all, that was the ultimate plan: That he would go and meet this woman and then Liu Cheng would somehow sweep in and take care of the rest. He wasn’t quite sure how exactly that was supposed to play out but he just trusted him that it would. But he could hardly ask to meet her right now, could he? Especially not after Peng Mu had just scolded him for his behavior — even if that had been done in a joking manner.

Jing Yi pulled himself out of his thoughts, noticing that Peng Mu wasn’t even paying him any attention more.

He winced but he felt that it wouldn’t hurt to try. Anyway, what was the worst thing that could happen? "Say, when is the next time you’ll get to see her? You can’t leave the fields very often so it should be quite a long time until then, right?" He felt that this question was much better than the one he had thought about before. If Peng Mu went to meet up with her, then maybe he could tell Liu Cheng before so he could just follow him. Then there would be no reason for him to meet her while things might still be able to come to an end.

Peng Mu sighed at that question. "You’re right. That is one thing I really dislike about the work here. It’s hard to meet her. So normally, I just go when we have a day off. But you also know that that isn’t very often."

Jing Yi looked slightly puzzled. He hadn’t been here for very long and until now, there hadn’t been any days off at all but that didn’t have to mean anything. Maybe right now just was a bad time since three people had died. Anyway, he didn’t want to make any assumptions about that. "There wasn’t a single one since I started. So how often is that?"

Peng Mu smiled wryly. "Well, it does depend a bit on what is going on at that time. If it’s time for the harvest, then it will be a long time since we need to hurry up with everything. At other times, it’s not that bad. We all get one every two weeks or something like that. They often have us take turns though to make sure it doesn’t influence the work in the fields. You were actually pretty unlucky. There was a free day just before you came."

Jing Yi just smiled as if he didn’t have a care in the world. "Well, it’s not that much of a problem for me. After all, my fiance isn’t here anyway. If I was in your position …" He shook his head, giving a sigh even though it wasn’t even his own life. "I can only imagine how hard it must be. I’ve been unable to see Qiu Ling for a few weeks now. Since the day we met, that’s the longest we’ve ever gone without seeing each other. It really is difficult. I can’t even imagine how it must feel for you and that woman if it’s like this since the day you met. It must be incredibly hard to get close to her like this, right?"

Peng Mu nodded. "That’s true. I guess it would be a little easier if we could see each other more often. At the very least, I wouldn’t just be a stranger to her now. But well, then again, I guess she’s still mourning her husband. So even if we saw each other more often, it might not help me. On the contrary, I sometimes think that if she saw me more often, she might be wary that I had any ulterior motives and wouldn’t even want to talk to me. After all, she did love him very much and I’m just somebody she has known for a little time."

Jing Yi didn’t know what to say for a moment. He certainly didn’t sound like somebody that had to do with demons and just like a man who was sad about not being able to get closer to the woman he loved. So not only should Peng Mu not know about what this woman had done, no, he likely also didn’t know that she wasn’t even human. When he found out, it would probably be very hard to swallow.

"How … How long have you known her?" If there were only able to meet every two or maybe three weeks, then it would explain why he hadn’t noticed anything strange about her. Even if it had been for a long time if he only ever had this kind of day with her, then how would he find out about something like this? Then Peng Mu had really gotten into this situation without any fault of his own.

Peng Mu pondered for a while. "To be honest, I can’t say for sure. It should have been two or three years? Maybe even three and a half. It sounds like a long time but it’s not actually that much. I really wish I would’ve had the opportunity to get to know her sooner. Preferably before she met her husband. Then, all of this wouldn’t be a problem at all.

"But I guess there are just some things you can’t have in life. Maybe she and I just aren’t destined to be together." He sighed and shrugged his shoulders. It was as if he was trying to appear nonchalant but failed miserably. Obviously, he suffered from the thought that he might never have a future with this one woman.

Jing Yi couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. He had hoped for so long but in the end, things would turn to naught. Wasn’t that sad?
