After getting a well-deserved rest, Qian Yu woke up the next morning to explore as he put on the best clothing he had brought along. They would leave the city tomorrow so he wanted to get up early. Just as he left his room, one of the other doors in the hallway opened as Zhao Xieren walked out.
“Ready?” Qian Yu asked as he looked at the pretty girl wearing long brown pants and a white long sleeved shirt.
“Mhm, let’s go!” Zhao Xieren replied eagerly.
A few nights ago, Qian Yu curiously asked if they were going to have time to explore Northern Star City. Hearing this, Zhao Xieren who had never been to Northern Star City agreed to it as well since she wanted to explore one of the largest cities in the country. In the end, they agreed to go explore the city together. Essentially, it was a date, but neither of them explicitly said anything about it.
As it was morning, the two went to get some breakfast as Qian Yu tried some new cuisines he never tasted before. Being the rich girl she naturally was, Zhao Xieren didn’t mind paying for the expenses as Qian Yu was pretty poor.
It was a bustling city Qian Yu observed. As a port city, there were all types of people here. Foreigners were easily distinguished with their darker skin tone since those in the Southern Ice Continent usually had very light skin tones.
Afterwards, the two walked around checking out some stores and eating some more street food before heading to port. They didn’t come too close but from afar, Qian Yu was astonished seeing the large boats. With dragon designs on them and the large and tall flags, they were mighty vessels.
Lastly, their main attraction was in the late afternoon.
Entering at Northern Star Auction House, they entered a small private room to bid after Zhao Xieren showed them a special card.
Northern Star City had a normal auction once every month and they sold some goods and items that one could not normally find. Of course, they weren’t super rare for cultivators as it was aimed towards rich mortals.
Although the items were considered expensive to Qian Yu, Zhao Xieren had a sizable amount of wealth and hoped to buy anything she fancied. As for Qian Yu, he knew there was no chance he could buy anything here and he was there to expand his horizons and learn about the prices of items.
As the starting time for the auction approached, more and more people entered the auction house until it was packed. At that moment, a charming and mature lady walked onto the stage and seductively smiled, “Welcome, everyone to our monthly auction!”
Along with her revealing short dress that displayed her long legs, she had an ample bosom and the crowds roared and applauded excitedly. Qian Yu wasn’t immune to her beauty either and he felt something stirring in the bottom part of his body as he turned his attention elsewhere to calm himself down while Zhao Xieren was sitting in a nearby chair.
As the auction continued, many items were sold but nothing seemed to catch Zhao Xieren’s interest until they started selling herbs and plants. After a dozen things were auctioned, the “Whispering Bamboo” plant was announced and a big grin appeared on Zhao Xieren’s face. It was a small pot with a small stalk of bamboo and some leaves on it.
“What is that plant for?” he asked.
“Mm, it's something pretty useful for my cultivation technique. As you will learn sooner or later, my family’s cultivation technique is called the ‘Wandering Blade in the Soundless Night’. It’s a sword cultivation technique and early on, one needs to learn and use wind laws and qi along with the sword. I’m sure you noticed it the other night. Anyways, this plant might help me when cultivating,” she explained and started bidding.
After a few minutes, she eventually got it after bidding 500 gold coins. Looking at the smiling Zhao Xieren, Qian Yu couldn’t see a single shred of pain after spending that much. ‘We surely are living in a different world,’ he sighed.
After a few more plants were sold, the female auctioneer announced, “Alright everybody, it’s that time of the auction. Without further ado, let us begin.”
With a wave of her hand, the curtains behind her opened as a girl walked onto the stage. The woman continued, “From the Dark Empire, we have a 16 year old girl at the 9th stage of the body refinement realm. The starting bid is 1 spirit stone or 100 gold coins with an increment of 10 coins”.
Hearing her words, Qian Yu realized that the girl was none other than a slave. In a world where might was right, slavery was pretty common. If opposing enemies or forces were to have a large conflict where one side would lose, the losing side would usually either die or be sold as slaves if they did not run away and got caught.
Slavery varied differently on the scenario. Obviously having to give up some rights the treatment you received was different. For example, some powerful families would buy slaves and use them as "servants", where they would have their own housing and food. This was to ensure that the family's privacy and secrets would stay safe. Yet there could also be situations where they would get poorer and unluckier situations naturally if they met a bad master.
Of course, human trafficking existed too but it wasn’t too common because the people that got trafficked were people of no background which meant they were usually weak cultivators or mortals which had no demand and a large surplus.
Looking at the eyes of the girl on the stage, Qian Yu sighed as he saw the poor hopeless eyes of the girl. He had seen those eyes countless times throughout his childhood in his grandpa’s clinic. It was none other than the ones who had already given up on life and accepted their fate. After reliving some childhood memories, he suddenly realized that the current price for the girl was already over 5 spirit stones!
“Do all slaves normally cost that much?” he asked confusedly. The 9th stage of the body refinement realm at 16 was to him, pretty good, if they weren’t born with a silver spoon in their mouths of course. However, 500 coins was a lot and Qian Yu didn’t even think he had used over 500 gold coins combined in his whole life!
“Of course not. Only the females ones are,” she blushed as her voice got quieter, “Because they are still virgin most of the time and have many uses.”
‘Ahh... that makes sense,’ he thought for a second before looking at her face. Then he lightly laughed as he saw the blushing Zhao Xieren.
In the end, the girl was sold for 6 spirit stones. The following two girls were even prettier than the first girl and were sold for 8 and 9 spirit stones respectively, leaving Qian Yu once again questioning how much he was worth if he was sold…
After that, the auction ended and the two left after Zhao Xieren went to pick her plant up. After dinner, they parted ways as they went back and prepared for their trip back to the sect.
After over a week outside the sect, the group of 11 finally returned. It was a great experience for Qian Yu as he learned a lot and managed to relax his body and mind. However, it was time to return to the grind. He was nearing the 6th stage of the body refinement and he was excited to advance another step.
Yet there could also be situations where

"Truth be told though, slavery wasn't that bad in the world."
Wtf?
"Of course not. Only the females ones are," she blushed as her voice got quieter, "Because they are still virgin most of the time and have many uses".
A small minority doesn't have it so bad just being raped or worse? Not so bad then right? Do you think readers are stupid? No, slavery is still just as bad as I imagine and know it to be. Don't try and downplay slavery, man. Gross... It's not a pretty business no matter how much you try to normalize it. I hope you don't make the mc a hypocrite that buys slaves and helps slavers after his parents and their entire village was destroyed by them. Even if he doesn't know that. It'll be a drop for me if he goes that evil, but I haven't seen it yet. It's just your attempt to make it not seem as horrid as it is made me worried and a little annoyed.
Spoilers, but he does. Was a drop for me.
@Ouroboros dude , calm the f down! is just a novel man! why bring your morals on different world and from a novel at that?
@hichris23
I'm not sure why you're so... excitable about this and you almost seem offended. It's just a matter of subjective taste.
I don't mind dark themes and such if they're handled well. This wasn't. The protagonist just doesn't feel like someone I can step in his shoes as comfortably without cognitive dissonance. The being totally okay with slavery from the start without any qualms was a big part of that. It was his second thought, but the writer had already built up two possible harem girls. The protagonist's quite frankly not typical by modern standards of ethics or common sense. (Not a lot off mind you. He's just a smidgen off. Enough to make reading this unsatisfying because that will stick in your head.) Which means it's dumb to try and make the other world arguments for them to be a deplorable shitstain. If you want that? Read Poppy War. That sh*t turned my stomach. That's real other right there in terms of ethics and historical accuracy for the time period. Though that book kind of sucks in its own way even without the gross scenes. I digress.
I read most of what's available and even ignoring the ethical concerns? The writing just doesn't cut it, man. The narrative structure is not well planned, it invalidates itself in places, throws out characters it developed as I said earlier, the pacing feels like it's just two steps behind where it should be to be truly satisfying, and the syntax is very poor. The scenes feel more like a dry diary at times, the setting and world building are shallow, and both are flat naratively. Locations aren't really described or built up because they likely weren't even thought of and when you picture the scenes they have no spirit to them. I just want to point out if you didn't know, but locations like cities are characters themselves that need their own character development. Towns here are just that... towns without descriptions of much at all. It's lazy.
Anyway. . .
I do read another novel called Void Empire on here, it's trending, and it has a protagonist that keeps slaves. I can read that one for a few reasons without it bothering me. For the sake of brevity:
The protagonist in that novel is against slavery, he keeps slaves because but he treats them better than the locals would, how the locals treat them is very dark and graphic, it's also very difficult to free slaves in that novel, the mc knows he can't change anything by just being angry about it, he is actively working to make things better throughout the novel, mc's powers are more interesting overall, and his personality isn't that of a psychopathic killer or degenerate. He will kill if necessary, but he doesn't enjoy it, and he doesn't shy away from it. He didn't go out of his way to buy slaves and it makes more sense when he does buy the ones he has. The syntax and writing visibly improves throughout the whole thing and all of the characters introduced stay relevant. The plot is not invalidates by a misguided attempt to over correct for the genre or his power. He's not afraid to make his protagonist overpowered from the start in a world of overpowered people and he's still accumulating power and best of all he is doing it for a purpose. One that's not so generic as saving the world. Which this novel has as the premise. Not only that? The fight scenes are even better. That's not to mention the world building being original and well planned out. Just like the plot. You can tell the writer has experience with MLA. Plus it even has smut and is harem. 😁
Just overall the writing itself is superior. Two novels that are very similar, both having slavery as a theme, and many other shared themes, but that one is just way better. While this one I dropped? That one is accruing patrons and I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually hires an editor and published
We think slavery is bad because we learn more about human values but if we think about middle ages, no one used to think inherently slavery is bad (there are some masters which are cruel but not concept of slavery) they just took it as part of their life.
Also regarding to virgin girls, It is cultivation world so I think their use is not just for s*x but there will be some reasons related to cultivation...maybe!
@ReiZero97
Are you arguing that slavery isn't bad because some people were not as malicious? 😆
Boy, let me tell you that in history those people were anomalies, not even worth mentioning, and even the ones who freed them or treated them the best preyed upon them. It was not a pretty business at all. We preserved some of the histories. The ships were waking nightmares of damp, cramped space. Stinking unwashed death and chains. Bodies being thrown over that didn't make the trip. The world ain't so pretty. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Some nice master? Even Thomas Jefferson raped his slaves.
One of the ironic prices of slavery was stagnation. A culture with it is doomed to fall. We had to have a war just to end it that killed more of us than any war we ever had. That includes the world wars. It was so bloody and apocalyptic. Sherman became a devil to end it. Scorching the Earth where he went to make sure there would never be another. He was pissed because his son died when he was at war and he just wanted it to end.
Anyway, you had a second claim. Boy, you're really innocent. So, in these cultivation worlds written by psychopaths, the women are like treasures themselves, objects, waiting to be plundered for a man's gain. They glorify virginity as some people still do today. Think about what effect that has on society. Then ask yourself if yours matters? In cultivation, it usually doesn't for men, but I have seen at least one that made it matter only because they practiced a forbidden technique, and that book was written by a woman. The Silver Fox and the Western Hero. Actually, it is a very dark book and at least she's open about it. You see the protagonist's love interest practiced a dance martial art because these diabolical aka demonic cultivators were going to sell her to a brothel that would then use her to feed her own life force to clients. They were going to get her addicted to poppy and use her up.
That's all I'll say on this. If you still don't get what I mean, then you won't.
@ReiZero97
Read up on your history. Toughen that stomach because I promise you it's ten times worse than what you think it's like. If you believe that this was just a writer trying to be historically accurate, you'll be surprised at the very least. 😄
I am not a fan of long ass replies so I am condensing in two sentences.
1. What I am saying is different from what you are perceiving.
2. See the fu****g context bro.

"there are some masters which are cruel but not concept of slavery" -ReiZero97
Seems pretty clear to me. Aside from the syntax errors of course.
You did say what I replied to, but you just didn't read it. Actually, I replied to everything you tried to say. Now you're cussing to reply? Pretty much what I expect from someone okay with slavery and that thinks women are for cultivation. 😆
Did you think I didn't understand your comments? I did, I just don't agree with you and think your perspective and taste are disgusting. You're either naive, ignorant, depraved, or some combination therein.
My replies are not even long. Unless you're on a phone? I type over a hundred and fifty words a minute.
Look what I am trying to say is, you can say what is bad because you know what is good. If we consider that Time period where people know only bad but not good, for them bad is not bad but just normal.
That doesn't mean I justify slavery like what you are saying. This is what I mean by context.
Don't judge everything in '' stories'' with mindset of 21st century man who studied for 20 years and learned to think critically and morally from age of 5.
@Ouroboros Yeah slavery is bad but you saying that women not protecting there virginity is ok is a lot worse after a woman goes thru a certain number of men she is no longer human she is public property that has lost the ability to pair bond feel empathy and a lot of other stuff like that and that are only psychological problems don't even start on the effects that much sperm from different men has on there brain its like being on meth 24/7 without the physical reprocutions in the early years but they start with dementia in there 30 while they start with hysteria the second they don't get there sperm fill for a few hours, the whole modern world is full of women on pills for depression, hysteria, bipolar and a whole lot of mental disorders but keep whoring them out its doing wonders for the world
