Chapter 20- Break 4- Midori's Regret!

(Midori's POV)

Once again, i find myself at the cemetary, staring at the small plate in the fresh earth.

Here Lies Alex Kozuki
1993-2028
She Deserved Better.

The three words, they still haunt me to this day, it felt like only yesterday that i recived word that Alex, along with most of her class had gone missing.

For months the police searched the country for them, but to no avail, it soon became a cold case.

A torchlight vigil was had in their memory, all of their friends were there, but when i got there, all i got were dirty looks.

"Ain't that Midori?" one person asked.

"Heh, i bet she's over the moon now that Alex is gone." another said.

"Bet she's rolling in money from her life insurance." a third person spoke.

It was true, i insisted Alex get a life insurance policy, which was worth $50,000!

But...it didn't make me happy....

Ever since that day, people looked at me with such contempt, it was toxic, Mom spoke to me on the phone once.

"I knew you taking Alex in was a bad idea, if your father and i weren't so old, we would have taken her in, Daisuke told us how you treated her, no wonder she's gone now, i don't blame her!"

"I never wanted to take care of her, Daisuke's enough of a headache!" i roared back.

"She is family! as her aunt, it is you responsibility to care for her, to love her." Mom said.

I simply huffed, Alex was just another mouth to feed, or at least she was.....

"You trully are heartless, do not ever call us again..." Mom said as she hung up.

Things got more difficult at time passed, i soon realised that Alex did most of the chores arround here, she did the dishes, swept, mopped, and even cleaned the toilet!

Without her, the dishes piled up, the floor got dirty, and the bathroom was now a total toxic waste pit.

As i look at that plate, i kept staring at those three words, "She Deserved Better."

They were right, Alex deserved better, she deserved parents who loved her without needing anything in return.

It just wasn't me......

My sister died in that flood, trying to keep Alex afoat, because at the time, Alex had a fever and wasn't strong enough to swin on her own, so she and her husband used all of their strengh to get her to safety.

In my anger, i blamed Alex for being sick, i blamed her for being alive, if she had died instead, Hikari would still had been alive.

I treated Alex like dirt, when she clearly didn't deserve it, i even called her "damaged goods" when she showed me her report card.

As i stared at those same three words on that stone plate, tears soon welled in my eyes, i tried to fight them, but was like fighting back a flood.

"I'm a monster...."

I took my fury out on someone who didn't deserve, and now she's gone, i can't even fucking say i'm sorry!

"Alex, i don't know if you can here me, but i'm so sorry, i know it doesn't mean shit now, but i'm sorry, maybe if i had shown some degree of kindness, maybe none of this would have happened."

But i knew better, she was never comming back, and i don't blame her.

Having said my peace, i got up, and made my way home, hoping that wherever Alex is, she's happy....
