Seven Sins System Chapter 507. Not Exactly The Open-Book Type
I sighed, as if relenting, but kept my tone light. “Alright, if you insist on knowing.” I leaned in a bit, lowering my voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “We had… a conversation.”
Penelope’s eyes narrowed even further, the faint glimmer of worry in her gaze intensifying. “Just a conversation?”
“Yes, a conversation,” I replied, letting my tone be as ambiguous as possible. “Sometimes, talking can be more impactful than anything else.”
She scoffed, folding her arms again, clearly unimpressed with my vague answer. “Don’t give me that nonsense. You don’t just ‘talk’ with people like my mother without a reason. You’re always working at some angle.”
I shrugged, feigning indifference. “Maybe I am, maybe I’m not. But you have to admit, she’s not exactly the open-book type. If she’s not telling you, then maybe you should respect that.”
Penelope’s expression flickered. “You think I haven’t tried? She just… she’s been acting like something’s changed. Something big. And it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that you had something to do with it.”
I sighed, realizing she wasn’t going to let this go easily. “Look,” I said, my tone softening slightly. “Whatever’s going on with your mother, it’s her decision if she wants to share it or not. I didn’t do anything to her that she didn’t want.” I watched her reaction carefully, noting the way her jaw clenched.
“You really expect me to believe that?” she asked, her voice a mixture of disbelief and simmering anger.
I chuckled, leaning back with a relaxed expression. “Believe what you want. But here’s the thing, you’re worrying too much. If she’s keeping quiet, maybe it’s because she thinks it’s best for now. Let her handle it on her own terms.”
Penelope’s glare only intensified, her jaw clenching. “She was in your room all night, Allen. I’m not stupid. I know it wasn’t just a simple conversation.”
“So?” I replied, maintaining my casual tone, though I could see the fire in her eyes.
She took a step closer, her gaze sharp and unyielding. “You slept with her, didn’t you?”
I shrugged, glancing away nonchalantly. “You should ask her that,” I replied, keeping my voice smooth. “Did I sleep with her? Or…” I leaned in slightly, dropping my tone to a whisper, “did she come to draw my blood?” I let my words hang in the air, watching as confusion flickered briefly across her face. “After all, it was you who mentioned my blood to her, wasn’t it?”
Penelope’s brow furrowed, a flicker of realization mingling with her irritation. “You’re saying… she came to you for your blood?”
“She is a vampire like you.” I said, allowing a faint smirk to play on my lips. “It’s not exactly common knowledge, is it? And yet she knew exactly where to find me. So you tell me, Penelope, who put that idea in her head?”
She paused, clearly caught off guard, and I could see the gears turning in her mind as she tried to process what I’d just implied. “Are you saying… she was there for your blood, not…?” Her voice trailed off, and I could see a sliver of uncertainty creeping into her eyes.
I simply raised an eyebrow, letting her draw her own conclusions. “Whatever you’re thinking, it sounds like you’ve already made up your mind. But maybe, just maybe, you should consider that there’s more going on here than you realize.”
Penelope’s face hardened again, her suspicion still simmering just below the surface. “If that’s true,” she said slowly, her voice low, “then why didn’t she tell me anything?”
I leaned back, crossing my arms. “Because sometimes people don’t feel the need to share every detail of their lives with others. Not even with her own daughters. She doesn’t owe you an explanation for every decision she makes.”
Her fists clenched, and for a moment, I thought she might lash out. But she held herself back, taking a deep breath. “If anything happens to her because of you… because of whatever game you’re playing, I swear, Allen—”
“Swear what, exactly?” I cut in, my voice calm but carrying an edge. “What are you going to do, Penelope? I think you know as well as I do that your threats mean very little here.”
She glared at me, her jaw clenching so hard I thought she might crack a tooth. But her voice was steady when she replied, her tone laced with a cold sort of intensity. “You never had the guts to say things like this before. I guess you already know she has your back.”
I narrowed my eyes, studying her carefully. “Of course I know. I’m not afraid of anyone in this academy anymore.” My voice was low, the words carrying a finality. “But don’t worry,” I added, standing straighter and allowing a faint smile to slip onto my face. “I won’t abuse my advantages.”
She scoffed, the sound bitter and disbelieving. “Sure. I’m sure that’s exactly what you’ll tell her, too.” Her eyes were filled with frustration, anger, but also a flicker of something deeper, concern, maybe even fear. “Just… don’t think for a second that you can play with her trust like some tool, Allen. It won’t end well.”
“I get it, Penelope,” I replied, shrugging off her comment as if it were nothing. “But if you have more questions, save them for dinner this weekend. This,” I gestured around the empty room, “is hardly the place for discussions like this.”
Before she could say anything more, I turned and walked away, feeling her eyes on my back the entire way. I was surprised that Penelope was more protective of her mother than Katrina, which was saying something, given Katrina’s own fierce loyalty. But then again, Penelope was right to be on guard, especially given the suspicions she clearly harbored. After all, she didn’t know the whole picture. None of them did, really.
I wouldn’t expect Red to have spilled the truth by now, especially given her loyalty to me. Red would risk telling them outright that the academy’s doctor was the same Lord of Wrath she had painted. Not without looking like she’d lost her mind. A devil among mortals, healing and curing? The irony was lost on no one, least of all me.
