The world changed five years ago in 2020.

Humans who got superpowers started to appear because of a pandemic called C-20. Some of them could control things by just using their minds, while some of them could create fire from their palm. After that, various superpower abilities appeared, and none of them could be explained by logic.

Following this, the criminals who used superpowers also started to appear. They wreaked havoc using their power and caused some terror in various places. Fortunately, those who opposed them also appeared.

Over a year, the government created a new organization to oppose criminals who used superpowers and decided on a new name to call them.

The organization was Hero League, and anyone who passed the background test and the exam could join it. They also started to call criminals who used their superpowers to break the law a Villain.

Heroes became a thing, and people admired them. The Villains were dissed, and people hated them. That was natural, wasn’t it? No one liked Villains.

The world had also changed. The countries were destabilized, so each continent agreed to one thing, to just combine the countries into one. So there were only seven countries left on Earth

However, such a thing didn’t matter to me, Imamura Rei, an ordinary civilian.

I didn’t have any superpower or anything that made me different from an average guy. To add that averageness, I also had black hair and black eyes, a common color that could be found anywhere in Solace, the city I was in, which was part of District 1 in Asia.

I was just a 19 years old boy who had just graduated from high school and tried to find a job, only to discover that I was rejected by all companies I applied to.

“Shit!” I grumbled, kicking an empty can in the park, and sat on the bench in a bad mood. “Damn those guys! Don’t they know that college costs a lot these days? No way a country bumpkin like me could afford them, goddamnit!”

I just returned from the 42nd company that I applied to. Of course, I was rejected. That was why, still in my suit, I stopped in the park to get some nice spring breeze this afternoon. It was calming… No. I wasn’t calm at all.

“Fuck it. I also have no superpower. They said I am useless? If only I had the superpower of being smart in anything, I would definitely create my own business, fucker! I won’t even apply to your company!” I shouted, trying to get my anger about being rejected out of my nerves.

Finally, I let out a long sigh to calm myself and leaned against the bench’s backrest with my arms sprawled over it. I looked up at the sky, thinking about what I should do in the future.

I had nothing: no status, no money, and no superpower. My only redeeming feature was my hard work and tenacity. My only wealth was this nice suit that I bought after saving for two years and my small rented apartment downtown.

Not going to lie. I dreamed about getting a superpower and making a living out of it when I heard about the government creating the Hero League. However, the reality was harsh.

‘I should find a part-time job for now. I won’t be able to eat if I run out of money.’ Thinking so, I opened my bank account on my phone to check my balance. It said $581.

Due to what has happened to the world, everything has become more expensive. Even the rent of my small apartment costs me around $2,500 a month. Looking at my balance once again, I sighed before cursing.

“Damn. And the rent will be due in a week. I am in such a bind.”

Because I didn’t have much money, that meant I wouldn’t be able to pay my rent. It didn’t even come close to it. I became rather stingy to save my last bit of money.

‘Fuck it!’

I looked around the park and noticed a drinking fountain near where I sat. I stood up, approached it, and drank some water from it.

“Haa… I come back to life.” I sighed, satisfied with the water. I had been so thirsty from walking for more than three hours since morning, and the plain water brought me back to life.

Now that I had been resting for a while, it was time to find another job.

‘Let’s do this. I hope I can land a good job.’

***

“Fuck this shit! I am out!”

Useless. I didn’t even land a single part-time job even after I searched until evening.

I drank a can of cola that I got on my way home while sitting on my bunk bed, looking out through the window of my small apartment that had an unexpectedly nice view of the night city.

“What should I do? I will really be homeless if this goes on. Should I return to my hometown?”

While muttering to myself, I suddenly remembered my mom in my hometown in District 51.

“Sorry, mom. It seems that living in a city isn’t that easy. I underestimated it.”

Three months of job searching ended up in vain. I blew the money my mother gave me for rent without even finding a single job. I would even appreciate it if I got a part-time job, but no.

All jobs require something from me, and I had nothing like that.

“Superpower this, superpower that. If I have no superpower, do I need to be a college graduate to get the job? What a load of bullshit!”

I threw the empty can out of the window out of anger. My room was located on the fifth floor, facing the street. It would be awful if the empty can hit someone, but I couldn’t help but ignore it for today.

“Huh?”

And I had never thought of that before throwing it away. The fact that the can would return to me and hit my head, directly knocking me out.

Thud!

“F-Fuck…”

The force behind the throw was really hard as if someone with a Strength Enhancement superpower threw it. I got blown away to the floor and hit the back of my head.

Crash!

My head was spinning hard, and a nasty headache attacked me. I also felt some hot liquid at the back of my head and couldn’t move my body.

‘Is this the end for me? Die by being hit by an empty can?’

With my last strength, I muttered my regret.

“S…Shit… I-I should’ve b-bought a bottle of milk instead of a can of cola!”

If I bought a bottle of milk instead of a can of cola, I surely wouldn’t be blown away as the bottle was made from plastic. It was my mistake.

“D-Damn… I-I really should drink milk…i-instead.”

My consciousness began to leave my body as I couldn’t help but close my eyes. At that moment, a strange voice rang in my head.

[Hidden desire detected. System activated.]

I couldn’t hear it clearly as I had already blacked out, but the last words were somehow spoken clear in my head.

[Host’s superpower detected. Supreme Milking System protocol is initiated.]

[Initiation complete. The system’s voice will be gone in 3… 2… 1…0]

[Conquer the milk, Host.]
