~And when you get there remember...~
~Remember...~
~You have to remember...~
Then the void.
He experienced a sensation of impending death, but it wasn't akin to being in a vacuum, which is what he had expected to happen if things had gone wrong. Instead, he found himself in a realm devoid of reality, where true nothingness prevailed. He felt as if he were a presence amidst emptiness. His very existence was abhorrent in this place and his soul felt like it was about to expand, explode, and disperse across an almost boundless expanse.
Except distance didn't exist.
Despite the absence of any meaningful concept of momentum in his surroundings, he continued to experience a sense of motion. Something impacted him, even in a realm devoid of existence. Two distinct entities made contact.
In his mind, he heard two voices that spoke in near unison.
~Jobab Agar of The Dark Earth.~
The voices persisted in speaking simultaneously, yet each voice conveyed a different message and spoke distinctly.
~You have great rage in your heart.~
~You have the ability to instill great fear.~
Conflicting forces engaged in a struggle for dominance over his body. These energies seemed inherently opposing, but surprisingly, they collaborated toward a shared objective. A temporary alliance emerged out of desperation and limited alternatives, serving the mutual interests of both parties.
The energies surged and pushed Jobab forward and out of the void, but not toward his original destination.
Jobab fell out of the void between dimensions and into the void between worlds. He could see a blue-white plane spinning below him with pinpricks of light all around.
The voices spoke again.
~You belong to the Red Lantern Corps.~
~Welcome to the Sinestro Corps.~
With those words, the truce ended.
And the battle for Jobab's mind began.
Jobab didn't know how long he screamed without making any sound. He experienced the sensation of his heart detonating within his chest. His jaw broke as it unhinged to expel all the blood from his body. He watched with an odd detachment as atomized bits of cardiac tissue floated away from him to freeze in the vacuum of space.
While his vascular system was inundated with a malevolent, corrosive plasma, his mind was overwhelmed by a relentless barrage of all his past nightmares converging upon him simultaneously. A decade of enduring relentless abuse, physical beatings, and unrelenting terror during his childhood surged to the forefront of his consciousness. Concurrently, memories of his transition into adulthood resurfaced. He recalled working as a bill collector and deriving perverse pleasure from inflicting torment upon others. Consumed by a deep-seated hatred towards humanity and everything around him, he harbored a malicious intent to subject the entire world to suffering.
One person at a time.
The reason behind his feelings remained elusive to him. There was an event, a memory he had intentionally suppressed, something he wished to erase from his consciousness. Lingering in the depths of his mind, he faintly perceived a sound so indistinct that he questioned its reality—a gentle, melodic voice softly singing in the midst of darkness.
The two forces assaulted him with waves of terror and rage to try and force him to make a choice. Choose one. Expel the other.
Screw that.
Jake had fought time and time again against horrors and personal pain for so long, this was nothing. He had been...
He had been...
What had he been doing? He was missing something. His mind was fragmenting. He needed to focus. He did what he had done so many times before. He reached down deep inside and focused his mind on a single thought.
~No.~
Adorning his fingers were rings that he clasped tightly, gradually bringing them closer to his face. As he examined them, he observed a red ring and a yellow ring, each bearing an unfamiliar glyph. Suddenly, a realization dawned upon him. He recognized those symbols from somewhere—perhaps from the pages of comic books he had read or the animated world of cartoons he had seen.
One Ring Howled.
One Ring Screamed.
~I Said, 'NO.'~
The rings stopped.
~Pardon?~
~You belong to-~
~Just. NO.~
He fought to harness both rings and aim the power of each at the other. They started to swell in energy as the power was about to be unleashed.
~Warning! If you continue on this course of action, you will not survive.~
~STOP! You'll kill us all!~
He mouthed a single word while he thought at them both, ~Master.~
There was silence.
~I am not 'You'. I. Am. MASTER.~
The Yellow ring was the first to yield, ~Yes, master.~
Jake pointed the yellow ring at the red one, ~I only need one of you.~
The red flared, then dimmed dramatically. Like a sulking beast, it responded, ~Understood.~
Jake narrowed his eyes, ~What did you say?~
The ring flickered, ~Understood... master.~
Jake expressed his approval with a nod, ~That's better.~ He surveyed his surroundings, attempting to organize his thoughts. The presence of the rings persisted by exerting an influence on his mind, but the intensity had noticeably diminished. It felt more akin to a persistent but milder repetition, like a child incessantly reiterating a point, rather than a violent onslaught. The red ring emanated pulsating waves of rage, while the yellow ring flickered with traces of fear. Both rings harbored some form of artificial intelligence, yet their demeanor appeared subdued or intimidated in some way.
Jake looked at the planet below him, ~Which world is that?~
Yellow responded first, ~My database is corrupted. We were both floating in the void between universes for so long, time no longer had meaning.~
Jake blinked, ~That... sounds familiar. Wait. You said Jobab.~ He paused, ~I use an alias. You will call me Master or Jake London. Do not use that name. People knowing my real name is bad.~ While Jake knew what he said was true, he wasn't entirely sure why.
Both responded, ~Understood, Master.~
He nodded, ~I was...~ He paused, ~You're both Artificial Intelligences and I assume connected to my mind. Correct?"
~Of Course, master.~
~Indeed, Master.~
Jake nodded a bit more, ~I was... doing something. Can you tell me what?~
~No.~ Responded to the red ring.
The yellow was a bit more informative, ~Part of your mind has been locked. By what means or how, I do not know, but you cannot access it, so neither can we. However, on top of that, it seems like your mind had been damaged before HE screwed you up even more.~
Jake looked at the Red Ring, ~What did you do?~
~Becoming a Red Lantern destroys the new member's heart and replaces their blood with pure hate. This process frequently reduces the recruit to a feral state and can cause memory loss. Your mind was also damaged by being exposed to the interdimensional void. I am surprised you are still thinking at all.~
Jake frowned, ~You said I was Jobab Agar of The Dark Earth. Why?~
The yellow cut in, "That is your name and where you believe you are from, but unfortunately, you do not understand the context of either at the moment. I conjecture that you are from a parallel universe and not the world below. Your mind seems to think the continents look familiar. Similar to your home world.
Jake blinked, ~Wait. Hold it. If I remember how you work, you should pick the best candidate. I doubt I am the most rage-filled or fearful person in existence. Why did you both choose me?~
Yellow flickered, ~We are required to seek out the best choice available to bond with.~
Red glowed, ~In the void between universes, there aren't many choices.~
Yellow pulsed as it spoke in Jake's mind, ~Our previous owners were locked in battle and a weapon detonated pushing us out of this reality. They died at each other's hands. We... survived.~
Red flared as it spoke, ~At first we ignored each other, but as the eons passed, even an AI can... seek companionship. So we spoke. Eventually formed a pact.~
Yellow continued, ~If anyone unshielded entered the void, we would each join with them as soon as possible and attempt to use the momentum built up from traveling between universes to push the new host back out and ride him back to our reality.~
Red flickered, ~Then the alliance would end, and may the best ring win.~
Jake smirked, ~You didn't think I could defeat both of you.~
The silence that followed said more than either ring could ever say.
Jake shook his head slightly, ~I assume you only have so much energy. How do you recharge? Don't you need lanterns or something?~
Yellow chimed in, ~We had eons to self-modify and slowly learned how to feed on free-floating emotions. Hate and fear exist everywhere, even in places where not even nothing exists. I feed on Fear.~
~And I feed off hate.~ Red continued, ~We should warn you, not to contact the Red Lantern Corps or Sinestro Corps. We are both... errors. Rings that can collect energy freely are not permitted. We would be destroyed upon detection.~
Yellow purred in Jake's mind, ~And most likely you as well, just to be safe.~
Jake nodded slowly, ~Right. Well... I need to do... something? I'm not sure what. For now, let's charge up. Where is the largest source of hate and fear that you can feed upon?~
Both rings flickered then put an image overlay to point out a city on the planet below him, ~That appears to be the largest concentration of rage and fear on the planet, Master."
He pointed at the city in question. It was lit up for it rotated into the night many hours ago.
"Let's go there."
I ve been waiting a bit to check your novel. After it got more words. Cant help myself from remembering this as "Hodor Lantern" which has so many "crack novel"posibilities. Merely the Lantern Oath consisting of saying Hodor multiple times si enough.
Nice hook, could be a Really Fun ride, especially if the New Him, decided that sucking those emotions out of situations was their best action. Letting his rings guide him to actually help somehow. Providing him with something new to fuel his own existence. Or not. Imagine the shock on a Green Lantern to see a multi color lantern of two major pains in their collective sides, actually helping. Then have Iron Man show up, and the color scheme is almost identical by pure happenstance. Would be an epically funny scene I'm sure. I'd say keep going, and have fun!
this is an auto insert right?
Ehhh... well. Every author can only write what they know. However, I also have done therapy for extremely broken people when working for a TLS (People leaving the Mental Hospital and returning to normal society). I don't do that job anymore. I also don't do the suicide prevention hotline anymore. To be honest, It became too much. I wake up screaming sometimes with nightmares about NOTHING THAT HAPPENED TO ME.
When that started happening all the time, it was time to get out. So, many of my characters are 'broken' in ways that my clients were. I don't use anyone whom I didn't talk with and get permission if I could share their stories. Even with that limitation, I have a whole CLOSET full of nightmares I can share.
However, my MC's usual philosophy about life is "me". The repeating theme of Bill Collector and being a bully or being a victim of being a bully, or being socially awkward and alone, or being the hero everyone looks to fix everything, yeah, I suppose part of that is me. But I mix and match. None of my MCs are JUST "Me". I had this asked of me once, "If you could be any of your characters, which one would you be?"
NONE. OH DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN WHAT SIN DID I COMMIT TO BE CURSED WITH HAVING TO BECOME ONE OF MY MAIN CHARACTERS?
And I've written MANY a story as a ghostwriter. (and way too much softcore po*n. Gotta pay those bills.) So, I can't honestly say, if the gods came down and said, "You can be any Main Character of which you own the IP, which one would you be?" I'd say, "Can I be a D&D character, specifically one of my NPCs?" And then the answer would be, "No. It must be an MC YOU OWN. It can be fan fiction, but you need to OWN the original MC, not something from a game."
Then I'd beg for a swift and merciful death.
I suppose if you asked, "Who has the most elements of 'you' inside them?" I'd say Jake London, but only because he's Sloppy. I didn't flesh him out much. Jake London originally was a Doctor Eon 1920s pulp sci-fi swashbuckler type whose tagline was, "Science is an Adventure!", but that character was used in a different series so... yeah. This is a bastard version of THAT. And... this version is also very... umm... I know it doesn't come through, but Anti-Semitic. I'm an Ashkenazi, btw.
Let's just say the two of us would not get along.
Ryan Yauger is based quite a bit on my nephew. (shh... don't tell him). I know nothing about the military. All my military experience comes from listening to old vets recovering from trauma as they talked to me at 3 a.m. Ryan is most like me, even if your lives are vastly different, in outlook. We have the same philosophy. I would say he is my Determination.
Toshi is closest to wish fulfillment as I get, but he also is extremely borked in the head and I really do NOT get off on femdom. I hate Toshi morally. He is a FLAWED and WEAK main character and I would say the one I like the least, even if he would be the best choice for being Isekai'd into my work. Correction, the SAFE choice. The choice least likely to end horribly and the MC I would have to work the least to try to fix everything that is going to go horribly wrong.
Side note, I once tried to pitch a TV show that was a sitcom that one could describe as The Office combined with Taxi in a collection agency. I called it Paid In Full. It was absurdist comedy combined with REAL EXPERIENCE in a collection agency, and that fatalism that you got from Taxi. And... I was far too Male, Straight, and White to ever get that idea produced by anyone, so you will see a great deal of that old TV show chopped up and reused in my books. I had some funny material. No sense in letting it go to waste.
Which brings us to Jack/Angel. Oof. I suppose Jack is my deeply cynical slash bitter side. He and Jake share the background of being Bill collectors. Angel is my innocent slash optimistic side. But... uh... To be honest...?
One, OH DEAR GOD I WOULD NEVER WANT TO BE HIM GIVEN HIS BACKGROUND PLEASE ANYTHING BUT JACK/ANGEL JUST KILL ME!
Two, If I were Jack/Angel without the horrific background, I'd fix the BS they are dealing with in about five seconds and then move on. They do not have the psychological tools to deal with their situation, so that's why they are as screwed as they are. I have the tools, know what the problem is, and how to fix the mental problems. The rest of their existence? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck me.
They're both wrong, BTW. I don't want to spoil more than I have, but deep down, they are both wrong, do things wrong, and deal with life wrong, but that's the point. They both deal with problems from different angles and while they can fix most of their problems, the very foundation of their lives is something neither can fix without each of them seeing the value in the other's PoV. That would be the "lesson" of them, so in many ways, I've got elements of my life in those "two", but in the end, yeah, oh god. We are nothing alike. Not even close.
I suppose... if you wanted to pick my TRUE self-insert. My one true "Author in the story"? It would be The Quonset manager.
It's a story based on me playing The Long Dark (Highly Recommend, I have thousands of hours in the game it is a visual treat). It's also how I'd go mad if I was in that situation. It assumes my wife is dead, which is something I will have to deal with sooner rather than later. The Origin of the Quonset Manager was written when I first found out about the SECOND terminal disease my wife has. The Spinal Tumor has been fixed and is in remission, but LAM... that... that doesn't go away. You can slow down its progression, but in the end, you will die a horrible, slow, painful death as your lungs turn into scar tissue and you slowly suffocate... or a chunk of lung breaks free and floats up into your brain and you stroke out, or... a few other progressively horrible ways it kills you so I'll spare you the details.
QM is me, at my lowest. It is a story of spiraling madness, hints of possible redemption, and the way that love is something that drives you, even if in the end, there is nothing left of you but a ghost that goes through the motions. Is the lingering pain that will haunt you after everything you lived for is gone, worth the few, fleeting moments of joy that someone else brings to you? (Yes, btw.)
I... could wax on this topic forever, for now we come down to the core of the author; A man selfishly begging someone in agony to remain in agony for as long as they physically can, for no other reason than because he cannot bear the burden of living without that person. Am I a good man for trying to give someone as much joy as I can with the time she has left? Am I a bastard for clinging to her because when she leaves, everything that is good in my life goes with her?
I am both, of course.
No... I'm afraid the only TRUE "auto insert" in all my stories is the Quonset Manager. The rest of my characters all have chunks of my life, but chunks of the lives of others as well. Sometimes a cautionary tale, sometimes to honor the memory of someone who no longer can speak for themselves. An echo of fallen companions who walked with me through this harrowing, glorious, twisted life, then parted ways. Many of my stories contain such echoes.
The body fails, the mind fades, the soul, if it exists, moves on, and in a moment, the heat that once burned bright enough to outshine the sun gutters out, until finally, we succumb to time. Life is order. Our bodies fight entropy constantly, our minds absorb information, reorganize it, and then return it to the wild. In the end, I will be nothing, have nothing, and mean nothing.
Except...
Maybe...
This.
This, where I answer your question in far more depth than you most likely wanted. This moment where I take a concept and place it inside your mind. It might take root or not. If it does, maybe it changes you, and later, when you die and become nothing and have nothing and mean nothing... maybe that influence will have influenced how you influenced someone else... and so on... and so on...
A breath of a thought of a shadow of an idea of a musing of an off-handed comment that changes nothing save maybe... one drop of rain lands on parched earth and a single thought grows to make a seed that is cast to the wind in hopes of finding fertile ground.
Or maybe another strolls by this web page and reads these comments and they are changed in your stead.
I hope my stories amuse you. I hope you find strength in them. I hope you become wise. I hope you reach out to someone and pat them on the head for no other reason than to show mercy. I hope you let go of rage for yourself or another. I hope you tame fear. I hope you build instead of destroy. I hope you leave the world better than you found it.
All my stories are this. All my characters, in one way or another, either as serving as a paragon or as a warning to others, all carry this at the core of who they are. Since this is the core of me, then I suppose that every "this" is an "auto insert". Whatever it is...
I hope it helps.
@TheEldritchGod 👍🏿
Interesting concept, I wonder if you will do other pairings such as green and blue rings, or go with some other combining.
Well, don't want to spoil it. There's no way to explain it without ruining it. But the primary focus will be these two rings. Ask me again around chapter 15-ish if I haven't telegraphed it by then.
As always, if you guess the plot, I'll confirm.
@TheEldritchGod Nah I'm good, I just tend Post my thoughts on stories that gets my mind running I love concept and design, and despite obvious what about having more rings , their is white lanterns that uses all ring types except black, but what if they don't use all rings just few that is compatible that is first least to my memory. If mc is to have red and yellow, what would mostly for to balance world to give him challenge assuming normal characters already from the universe of DC can't do it. Most likely by something on par which would be green and blue, blue counters yellow and green for red, if I'm not wrong it been while since read lantern lore. Some color rings straighten other rings while some weaken other color rings. And if isn't what is planned for this story, it be interesting concept in it self of having green and blue dual ring user. A what if of this story if mc got different ring colors instead.
@Demain_csomic_winters Pretty sure there are characters with more than one ring in canon. I remember hearing about a green lantern that also gained a red ring, and used both. There was also a red lantern from the short lived tv show that ended up with a blue ring at the same time during his cameo on Young Justice.
glad you decided to share it

Le puck, I thought it was a pic for the world of pirates and the Caribbean, anyway... this seems good, though a bit concerning with easy it is for him to conquer those rings... bad mojo vibes and all.
Oh... that will be explained.
