Short chapter sozzy :3

The notifications from the system swept across her eyes as a smile came to her face. It had told her that she had killed a total of thirty-seven of the wraiths in exchange for nearly half of her mana. Yet in the end, it was well worth the cost.

All stats are doubled in this state.

Category: Cryomancy – Dominion

Rin saw that she had gained 250 stat points meaning that what she gained from reaching the level thirty milestone was doubled. However, she could care less about such a small increment in strength, rather her focus was placed entirely on the new skill she had received. Winter’s Embrace.

‘Interesting...’ she thought.

A quick glance over the description gave her a few ideas of how the skill would function. First, she assumed that it would require a hefty cost of mana to activate, while secondly it would require another source of mana to sustain the ability. The question was just how much would be needed. But when her eyes panned over to the last part where the category of the skill was listed, a single brow was raised.

‘Dominion?’

It was a topic that she was quite knowledgeable about, but seeing it now was just plain confusing. Dominion—as she knew it, was a term that referred to a type of skill that would elevate the user’s abilities at a massive expenditure of energy or mana. Or in other words, an ultimate trump card or last resort, which explained the doubling of stats when activated.

‘But why...?’ Rin murmured.

The girl knew that it was far too early to receive something of such power as she racked away at her brain for answers. But the only conclusion she could form was that of her class.

Class: Heiress of Ice

Heiress as a word inherently held a certain strength and prestige. It was a word that could be used as an emblem of a great lineage, yet the fact that the class made her to be an heiress of an element rather than to a family could be a curse. She had heard several stories from her former world, entailing those that had lost themselves to the overwhelming power of nature...

Although her thoughts were soon interrupted as another horde of wraiths carefully circled around her, hovering just slightly above the decimated bodies of their fallen kin without a hint of remorse.

Rin glanced towards the scythe-wielding monsters for a second before turning her attention over to the warrior. The sight she saw was even worse than where she was at. Blood had been spilled across the entire battlefield; deep gorges were scored across the dirt as hundreds of fallen bodies were left behind the warrior’s wake. His figure whirled in synchronization with his gore-soaked blade, laughing death in its face as the man relished in the thrill of battle.

“Seems like he’s having fun,” she murmured, cracking her neck as she took a step forward. “Let’s test this shit out.”

Rin doubted that that she would be able to make use of the skill to its fullest potential, but when life offered an opportunity such as this, why shouldn’t she make use of it?

Grinning, Rin unleashed the skill, immediately feeling an overwhelming surge of mana rush out of her body before erupting into the surroundings. The very air seemed to shiver and crackle with the raw power of frost as snow billowed and coalesced into existence within an instant. Then, within a blink of an eye, the battlefield was transformed, covered with a thick blanket of snow and ice as the weight of her magic slammed down against the once peaceful pastures.

Rin staggered to the side; face deathly white as her anticipation of the toll was a far underestimation. Just activating the ability required 50,000 out of her remaining 70,000 pool of mana, while its upkeep was nothing to scoff at either. With each passing second, she felt a thousand points being ripped out of her being to supply the unending hungers of winter.

‘Damn...’

Quickly recovering, Rin felt the warrior give her a side-long glance, something she probably wouldn’t have been able to notice had it not been for the doubling of her stats. Despite the strain, she couldn’t help but admire the ability. Time seemed to crawl, or perhaps the creatures around her were slowed to such an extent that it created an illusion of time itself decelerating. Their bodies were coated in a thick layer of snow, the weight of the element pushing against their bodies as they were forced to drift within the blanket of white.

However, Rin tore her gaze away from the toils of the wraiths as she had almost forgotten her objective of testing her skill. With only seventeen seconds left of upkeep, she had to make it worth it.

Rin summoned a dagger into her hand, flicking her wrist and sending the ice accelerating into the nearest enemy. The doubled stats definitely showed in the process of how quickly the weapon travelled, but what interested her was what the dagger inflicted.

Usually, when her attacks pierced into the enemy, they would simply draw blood and remain embedded into whatever creature’s flesh. Although this time, it not only did exactly that but also had the effect of ice spreading from the wound without her own volition.

‘Biting cold, eh?’

She watched as her cold imbued magic began to spread across the wraith’s body until it covered its entire surface, leaving behind nothing but an intricate sculpture of gleaming ice.

Rin looked around at the rest of the approaching creatures, slight sympathy in her eyes as she took in their predicament. Those that had managed to come within a tens metre of her position were now barely able to move. Their legs were stuck in the snow, while their bodies were encapsulated with the freezing properties of her skill. A tragedy was all she could say, actors of death waiting for their own tragic end.

Raising an arm, she brought an end to the performance. From above her head, an arsenal of magic circles formed, her frostflow running on overkill to sustain all the ice as hundreds of bolts spiraled across the stage. They rained against the wraiths, the maelstrom of ice encasing their bodies within a frozen tomb as their nonexistent mothers cried sorrows.

Then finally, the girl fell to a knee. Her dominion waning in strength as the magic in the air flickered silent. Spring returned to power as the last of her mana was stripped away from her being. For the first time in a long while, something other than her health had reached zero.

Exhaustion washed over her like an unrelenting blizzard. The very essence of her power had been completely drained away, and now she felt rather empty and vulnerable. Her torso fell forward and she catched herself with her hands, gasping for breath as exhilaration flowed throughout her body like a raging infernal wyrm.

Rin knew that the immense power of the skill was something her body couldn’t handle, for now at least. Yet she couldn’t help but feel excited as now the beginnings of true strength were starting to show.

“Haha... I’ll leave it to them.”

She let out a tired laugh as she rolled over onto her back, chest heaving heavily as she lay surrounded by the chilling aftermath of her dominion. Her vision started to blur as she gazed up at the darkening cavern ceiling.

“Just lemme take a quick little rest...”
