I've hesitated to include dialogue in the past, as I often worry it might come across as cheesy in my writing. Perhaps I should focus on practicing my dialogue-writing skills for my next story.

I would suggest maybe adding more dialogue. The story reads almost like a retelling where the mc is summarizing instead of actively happening.
