Day 5

"Ugh," I moaned, my eyes snapping open to a skull-splitting headache. Piercing rays of sunlight slipped through the leafy canopy above, blinding me as I tried to adjust to the morning light. Realizing that I was lying on something unexpectedly soft, I narrowed my eyes—fur?

"Master, you're finally awake!" A puff of monochrome fur bounded up to my left, accompanied by the subtle movement of what I realized was my pillow. Before me was a Direwolf, its white fur adorned with black specks, punctuated by a grey mane that added a mystical dimension to its appearance. Its eyes bore a striking contrast of stark white pupils against yellow sclera, reminiscent of an infinite void.

I rolled over, greeted by a second Direwolf offering its body as a makeshift pillow. Both wolves fixed their gaze on me, wagging their bushy white tails with an odd semblance to domestic canines.

"Shiro, Kumo?" I ventured, eyeing the two magical beasts. "Yes, Master!" They chimed in unison, their tails wagging even faster.

A warm smile tugged at my lips as I stroked the velvety fur of Shiro, the Direwolf-turned-pillow. Elated by my awakening, the wolves let out an exuberant howl. Kumo nudged my arm, looking at me with a palpable sense of expectation. I returned the gesture by delving my hand into Kumo's luxurious fur.

“Dogs really are the best,” I mumbled to myself, soaking in the tranquil moment. Their rhythmic breathing enveloped me in a cloak of serenity.

"This One urges the Host to act swiftly. According to your memories, Rimuru should have already vacated the Sealed Cave."

"Fine, fine, Granny," I groaned, reluctantly peeling myself away from Shiro's welcoming fur.

My eyes lingered on the wolves and their excited tails. I really wanted to—

*Swift action is advised*

Fine, fine...

"Notice anything different about yourselves?" I queried, still somewhat preoccupied with their expressive tails.

“We have evolved into Void Wolves.”They announced

What are those? I’ve never heard of them before.

“Did you get any skills?”

“Yes! Our Coercion has evolved into Haki!”

“Nothing else?”

“Y-Yes…” The two direwolves’ tails drooped, eyes fixed on the ground in dejection

“N-no, it’s alright.” I quickly try to console the two dejected wolves.

But I really was expecting some Nihility Energy-related skills, considering they used my Nihilicules to evolve, as well as evolving into another branch of direwolves called ‘Void Wolves’.

*Nihility Energy is near impossible to control, the only reason the Host can control Nihility Energy is due to his status as a Reincarnator. It is not something that can be replicated by a mere Extra Skill or Unique Skill.*

“Oh, okay. Then can you guess what the benefits of being a Void Wolf are?”

*The Void Wolves will most likely have an affinity for Nihility energy or similar destruction-based energy in the future.*

“I see, that makes sense.” I struggled to resist the urge to begin playing with the two adorable doggos

"Master, our magicule storage has expanded substantially!" Their mental voices jerked me back to reality.

“Source?”

*The two Void Wolves should have twice the amount of magicules that Ranga had as a Tempest Wolf.*

Holy shit, that’s crazy; Ranga already had a heck ton of magicules and you’re saying both of them have double that?

*This increase stems from the use of as well as quantity of Nihilicules used during their evolution*

Wait, wait, wait. Isn’t this a perfect suit for Haki? The more magicules a monster has, the stronger the Aura, which the Haki relies on, will be right?

*Yes*

I might have hit the jackpot. I've got to test this out immediately

“Time to hunt!” I declared, striking a dramatic star pose with my arms

*...*

Why do I feel like Source is judging me? Eh, whatever. Shiro and Kumo let out a jubilant howl, their tails practically windmilling. With a leap, I straddled Shiro's back, my hands slipping multiple times before I finally got a secure grip. Ignorant of my struggles, the wolves shot forward, the scenery blurring around us.

Their speed was phenomenal—nearly three times faster than my peak velocity. Navigating through the forest was effortless for them, dodging boulders and darting between trees.

Barely minutes into our sprint, Shiro communicated, "Master, there is formidable prey up ahead—about twenty paces away."

“How do you know?” I asked, genuinely confused as I couldn’t sense it either, despite my skills.

"We always could," came Shiro's equally puzzled response.

*It is most likely the Intrinsic Skill: Keen Smell”

“Ah, thanks for that Source.”

We soon burst into a clearing framed by towering trees, its center dominated by a single rock on which a creature basked in the sunlight. Its blue scales shimmered, and its two wings spread out lazily. With dark blue horns, a lighter blue underbelly, and four legs, it was undoubtedly a dragon.

*Technically, it's a Lesser Dragon*

…I couldn't help but mentally conjure the nerd emoji for Source at this point.

Sensing our arrival, the Lesser Dragon shifted, likely considering Shiro and Kumo the greater threats, given my suppressed aura.

“Alright, let’s do this guys!” I dashed up to the Lesser Dragon, gathering Nihilucles in my right hand.

"Yes!" Shiro and Kumo bolted to my flanks, effectively surrounding the Lesser Dragon.

Seeing the encirclement, the Lesser Dragon lunged at the one it assumed was the weakest link: Me. The Lesser Dragon raised his claws, ready to cleave through my frail body. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as the dragon had anticipated.

The two Void Wolves let out a harrowing spiritual pressure, washing over the Lesser Dragon like a flood. The Dragon stopped in its tracks, its pupils dilated in fear. That was a terrible blunder. It lost its balance as inertia did its work, causing it to stumble and nearly trip. Unfortunately for the Dragon, it didn’t get the chance to regain its balance.

I smashed the Nihilicules gathered in my palm into the dragon’s scales, the black energy effortlessly infiltrating the Dragon’s body. Its eyes widened in disbelief before it collapsed, landing with a resounding thud.

“Good job, guys!” I grinned as the wolves looked at me, tongues lolling and tails swishing.

*Awoooooo*

Their victorious howls echoed through the forest, filling the air with a sense of triumph. Source took the helm, rapidly consuming a third of the downed dragon, leaving the rest for Shiro and Kumo. The question of where all that meat went still boggled my mind.

My moment of triumph was interrupted by a sudden gut-wrenching pain that had me sprinting to the nearest bush. Another day, another digestive crisis. This was really getting tiring…

*Notice. Skill: Flame Breath has been obtained*

“LET’S GOOOOOOOOO.” I whooped, my arms flung skyward in exultation.

Shiro and Kumo exchanged bewildered glances, probably wondering if their master had lost his marbles.
