Summer's warmth mingled with the cool air that spilled forth from the silent forest as they ventured deeper into its depths. The shrine maiden, her obsidian eyes reflecting a sense of wonder, looked around, absorbing the hauntingly beautiful scenery that surrounded her. The nameless knight, however, remained on high alert, his vigilant gaze scanning their surroundings for any potential threats that might spring forth from the shadows.

As they journeyed further, the forest's eerie stillness persisted, broken only by the occasional snap of twigs underfoot and the rustling of leaves and rotten branches that covered the dirt road like a decaying carpet. It was as though time itself had paused within this ancient woodland, where the only movement was their own, disturbing the hushed tranquility.

The ethereal monkey, summoned by Miko earlier, was their silent scout, far ahead of them. It deftly scaled towering trees, its form agile and ethereal as it leaped from branch to branch. Miko shared a telepathic link with the creature, granting her access to its keen observations. She silently thanked the Kami for this extraordinary power, which now served as their eyes and ears in this enigmatic realm.

Each step they took became increasingly treacherous as the oppressive silence weighed upon them. There was a dread that hung in the air, an invisible menace lurking in the shadows. The forest, devoid of any animal presence, was an unsettling anomaly, with not even the faintest hum of insects to be heard. Nameless Knight, ever vigilant, had been searching for signs of life but found none, and his growing concern mirrored the unease etched into Miko's features.

Minutes stretched on since they first ventured into the woods, and still, there was no sign of another soul apart from the two of them. Miko's instincts screamed at her that this was the work of a yokai, but malevolent spirits typically only emerged under the cover of night. So, what could have caused this unnatural phenomenon in the broad daylight?

The answer came abruptly when the telepathic connection with their ethereal scout was severed. Miko's eyes widened in bewilderment, her heart racing as she felt an intense, stabbing pain in her chest. She gasped and groaned in agony, her hand clutching at her heart as if trying to ward off the torment. The nameless knight, his eyes filled with concern, rushed to her side.

They sought refuge beneath the shade of a colossal tree, its gnarled roots protruding from the earth like ancient sentinels. Miko sank to the ground, her breaths shallow and ragged, as the knight stood guard, his senses alert for any signs of what had caused her sudden distress.

The sharp, stabbing pain that had afflicted Miko gradually subsided, leaving her feeling better with each passing moment. It was a reassuring sign that she was recovering from whatever had assailed her. The nameless knight, ever vigilant, sensed that the sudden pain must have been connected to their ethereal scout, and he couldn't help but draw a parallel to the dark witches of his world who used ravens as their eyes and ears. It was a power that echoed with the eerie telepathy of the ethereal monkey.

But theological and moral dilemmas were a luxury they couldn't afford at this moment. Despite the stark differences in their beliefs, the knight's growing admiration for Miko outweighed any religious indoctrination. He wasn't a crusader or an inquisitor, but a valiant knight who had served a prince-elector, and he had learned the value of respecting others' beliefs, a concept unheard of in his world. Survival dictated that he work alongside the people of this unfamiliar land, regardless of their practices.

After a brief respite, Miko rose from her weakened state, silent gratitude conveyed through a nod towards the knight. He responded with a nod of his own, an acknowledgment of her unspoken thanks. With renewed determination, they pressed forward, seeking their elusive foe. The knight readied his longsword, while Miko drew her bow, the ethereal monkey's disappearance leading them in the direction they now ventured.

As they continued through the dense forest, a clearing came into view, bathed in the brilliant sunlight of the midday sun. At its center stood a colossal tree, a behemoth of nature surrounded by small, enigmatic mounds. The two of them cautiously approached, scanning the surroundings for any signs of danger, their weapons at the ready.

Yet, to their surprise, there was no immediate threat in sight. This clearing appeared to be the very place where the ethereal creature had vanished. They lowered their weapons, their instincts telling them that this place held significance beyond their understanding.

Miko, ever attuned to the spiritual world, moved closer to the gigantic tree, her gaze drawn to a Shimenawa, a sacred rope woven from rice straw, and Shide, zigzag paper streamers, that adorned the tree's branches. Her heart quickened with recognition. This was undoubtedly a sacred ground, and the massive tree before her was a manifestation of a Kami, a divine spirit. The question that remained was which Kami resided within.

Meanwhile, the nameless knight focused his attention on the small mounds surrounding the tree's mighty roots. They seemed out of place, and a gnawing unease settled in the pit of his stomach.

With cautious steps, the knight approached the enigmatic mounds, his curiosity dancing like a flickering flame. Beside one of them, he spotted a colorful, intricately decorated rope that silently beckoned him. The temptation was irresistible; he reached out and gave it a gentle pull.

At first, the rope yielded willingly to his tugs, but then, as if possessed by an unseen force, it abruptly stopped, thwarting his progress. The knight's determination was unwavering, and a relentless urge to unveil the mystery spurred him on. He drew upon the point of his longsword, becoming a dedicated excavator of secrets.

After several attempts, the knight's blade struck something that resounded with solid certainty. Carefully, he cleared away the dirt, uncovering the point where the rope was ensnared. The instant his eyes fell upon what lay beneath, a bone-chilling revelation coursed through him, sending shivers racing down his spine.

Miko, who had been entranced by the presence of the tree Kami, was pulled from her reverie by the knight's feverish digging. She hurried to his side, her obsidian eyes wide with concern. Speaking in her native tongue, she cast a bewildered glance toward the mound he had been excavating. Then, in a gut-wrenching moment, she let out a piercing scream of abject horror.

Before them lay the rotten head of a woman, her lifeless eyes fixed in an eerie, unblinking stare. The rope was cruelly bound around her neck, a macabre leash of death. The burial itself appeared hasty as if the person responsible had acted with grim impatience and without a shred of reverence.

Dread tightened its icy grip on the knight and Miko as they faced this grotesque revelation. An avalanche of questions tumbled through their minds, each more unsettling than the last. What sinister fate had befallen this unfortunate woman, and why had she been interred in this remote and unholy place? What malevolent force had guided them to this cursed grove adorned with eerie Shinto relics? Standing before the tree Kami and the rotten corpse, they understood that the secrets lurking within this haunting forest were far darker and more insidious than anything they could have ever imagined.
