I woke up that morning with more questions than I had answers to. Isis had revealed a lot in her warning last night, and I couldn't help but focus on one of the things she said,

"Any 2nd tier class, even at the highest levels, would be slaughtered instantly." Does that mean there is an even higher tier? What would it look like? And how strong would they be compared to us? I would've loved to think about these matters more, but my time was limited, so I quickly got up and headed to the door. Before opening it, I looked at Kathryn, who was still sleeping soundly, and wondered why the Empire was after her in the first place. Whatever the case, we'll protect her, I thought to myself before leaving the room.

Apparently, Batti and I were the first to rise. The others must have been really tired, I thought to myself as I tried to avoid eye contact. Still remembering what I saw last night, I decided it'd be best for both of us to act like that never happened, but Batti seemed to have other ideas.

"It was for my daughter," He began with a somewhat embarrassed look on his face. "I'd love to visit my family after this war, and I picked out that gift for her not too long ago, but the hand tore, so I had to fix it."

"I see. You must be a good father, then," I said to him with mixed emotions. At least very least, he's a lot better than my deadbeat dad, I thought while trying my best to suppress the rage that was bubbling up.

"I try, but these circumstances keep getting in the way."

"Are you talking about the war?" I asked.

"Yeah, I was planning to return to my village for a while after killing the Cyclops, but now, who knows how long it'll be before I see my family again," He said with a slightly sad expression on his face. I could sense an undercurrent of fear in his voice, which felt unusual coming from him.

"Don't worry. You'll get to see your family again. I won't let any of you die." I knew I was making a big promise, but I would try to the best of my ability to keep it. A part of me wanted to believe I was doing this out of goodwill, but another part of me was skeptical. At the end of the day, no tactician ever wanted to feel responsible for the deaths of their party members, and I was no exception to this.

"Oh, Daphne, you're already up! It's good to see you back!" Kimmel said as he approached me with all the others in tow. Kathryn was still groggily rubbing her eyes, but I was glad to see that everyone was up!

"Of course! I am always early!" I boasted, but Phildina wasn't going to let that comment slide,

"Except when you're in a hot spring."

"P-Phildina! H-how could you?!" I felt betrayed. However, we could not continue our usual routine, as it was time for us to meet. We all sat around a white table, ready to discuss our plans for the upcoming battle. "We learned from our inquiry last night that a battalion is approaching us," I began. They were all silent at this, but I could see the worry in their expressions. "According to the fliers, it'll take them two days to get here, which could be today or tomorrow depending on the accuracy of their predictions. So, let's first review our weapon ranks before anything else."

They all revealed their weapon ranks, and it ended up looking like this:

Name Weapon Type Rank
Kimmel Swords, Lances  A, B
Sarde  Swords, Lances  C, A
Batti Axes  A
Phildina Lances, Tomes  S, E
Kathryn Swords  S
Hertz Knives  B
Lucia Tomes  A
Matilda Staves  A

I had gained a great deal of weapon EXP from my promotion, too. My bow weapon rank had shot up to B, and I had access to E-rank swords now! Everything went as I expected it, but hearing about Lucia's tome rank came as a surprise to me. Dealing the finishing blow to the Cyclops must have given her more weapon EXP than I realized, I took a mental note before moving on to the next thing.

"It's looking good," I began. "Most of us could use Mythril weapons with these ranks." At my mention of the word "Mythril," Kimmel and many others averted their gazes as if they were hiding something. I hope this is not what I think it is... "Kimmel," I spoke in a particularly sweet tone of voice.

"Yes, Daphne?" He answered hesitantly.

"What happened to the Mythril?" I asked with a smile, but my eyes were not smiling.

"Umm, Phildina said she knew a blacksmith, so we gave it to her but haven't heard from her since then..." I see. I turned to Phildina and asked,

"Well, what happened?" At this, she started giggling like a child who had successfully pulled off a prank, and she said,

"I had the weapons forged ages ago! I even brought them along with me!" She got up, ran upstairs, and came down with an assortment of silvery-black, Mythril weapons.

"You really outdid yourself with this one, Phildina," I muttered as my eyes were glued to the swords, axes, spears, and bows she brought to the table. Something told me that this wasn't even everything.

"Huh? What was that? I couldn't hear what you just said..." This girl.

"Thank you, Phildina." At this, she smiled mischievously, leaned in, and whispered,

"You can thank me with a kiss," but I was already starting to get used to her tricks.

"Sure," I agreed. Then, I took her hand and kissed it as a knight would, but few noticed it as everyone was busy checking out the Mythril weapons.

"You know what I meant, Daphne," She said with a cute pout, but I chose to play dumb.

"Do I?" She rolled her eyes and gave up, but I didn't consider it my victory. It was more like a draw. I got her to back off, but her words lived on rent-free in my mind.

After they were done checking out the new weapons, I addressed them once again, saying, "I wore my Limit Break last night and was promoted into a Ranger." Everyone clapped for me when they heard this, which was a bit embarrassing but also nice. "I'd really love to learn how to use a sword, so Kimmel, can you teach me?"

"It would be my pleasure," He answered again in a gentlemanly tone, but through some incredible feat of self-control, I managed to stop myself from laughing when I said,

"Thanks." Should I tell them about Isis' message? I wondered about it for a while before ultimately dismissing the idea. That would only cause unnecessary worry. At most, I could find one or two people to tell, but the party would be better off not knowing. "Let's talk about our formation next..."

Kimmel, Sarde, Batti, and Kathryn would be our front liners. Lucia and I were to give support from the rear. Matilda was our healer, Hertz was the scout, and Phildina would support the front while also keeping an eye out for enemy fliers. She probably had the biggest part to play in all this, so I expected her to be nervous, but instead, she would say things like,

"Our invincible tactician would never lose!" She believed in me, and I did not want to disappoint her, so I approached her after the meeting and proposed an interesting idea to her.

"You want my help to steal some salt?"

"Yep, three bags would do, and you could probably pull it off before the target knew what hit them," I said to her confidently.

"I don't know what you're planning this time, but I trust you, Daphne,"

"Y-yeah, thanks," I managed.

It took us a while to find it, but when we did, Phildina pulled things off excellently. We escaped with three bags of salt, and the target didn't even know what happened. There was no way he could, especially with Phildina flying at the speed of sound like that... I almost puked at the thought, but now, we were dumping the salt into the moat from the Pegasus.

"What's the reasoning behind this?" Phildina asked me with a confused look. I didn't want to delve into explanations about electrolytes, so I said,

"It makes lightning magic more effective." After we finished dumping all the salt, I asked, "Phildina, can you come with me after this? I want to ask the fliers a few questions."

"Hmm, I'm guessing you want me to threaten them into cooperating?" Y-yikes! She's getting really good!

"Well, you're right about that, but I also want to confirm some details about the enemy."

"Okay, if you say so!" I had to ensure that my plan would go off without a hitch, so I needed all the cooperation I could get. Maybe I should also speak to the commanders, I thought to myself as we returned to Fort, ready to threaten— I mean, ask the fliers nicely for their cooperation.
