A noble teenage girl from the Greek city of Croton is allowed by her father to travel with a roaming band of philosophers to Madaurus in Roman Africa, where she will be educated in philosophy and fine letters. There, she meets a strange girl named Eulogia. The whole story is told in Latin, with small amounts of Ancient Greek.
