This is a fun little story of an outcast who grows into her own (so to speak). I'd say more, but that'd spoil the ending, which is pretty much the best part.
Features a tribal society, but there's a good balance of worldbuilding in terms of the names and customs vs. familiar elements so there's no confusion while reading. There's also some good foreshadowing sprinkled throughout which builds toward an ending that is both inevitable and surprising.
I think this would have done well as a short series, since I found I wanted to see more of the MC's life. Due to its length and the relatively long span of time it covers, there's somewhat more tell than show. Personally, I think there are definitely some sequences that may have benefited from a slower "show" sequence, particularly with the MC's mother. Alas, it is a single chapter short story! (Shucks!)
Aside from that, the tale's ending was twisty, twisted, and quite satisfying.
Overall, this is a fun read. I recommend it for nights when you want a short and spooky tale about a time and place not our own. (And really, this would go perfect with a comforter and a mug of hot chocolate... sort of regret I didn't have that set up when I read this now, heh.)
