Synopsis

Hello everyone, since I feel I should make it clear, I want to say that this story is written from the perspective of a marginalized trans Indigenous woman. As the author, and a trans woman of Chippewa First Nations, I ask that my readers please not ask me to elaborate on any creatures I may add and to enjoy the story with me as I write it. I will be writing primarily in English because I do want this to reach a wide audience and I do not use my language much outside of my community. Thank you for choosing to read this novel, and I hope you have fun reading this native magical girl story set in an alternate world from her own.
__
Ana takes a walk upriver one day to clear her head atop some hills. As she is thinking of her family and community's support, she is stricken with grief at the same time. She and her family do not have the money to pay for her surgery, and the waiting list feels like it is only getting longer. When she is using all her strength not to cry, a strong wind blows down from the mountains across the river and she feels the world twist around her. She almost blacks out and tries to stand up, bleary and lightheaded.
When she feels odd enough about how her vision isn't getting any clearer, she returns home only to find that her own family do not recognize her. Looking more closely, she barely recognizes herself as her body has changed, but so has everyone and everything around her. What has happened and why is everyone speaking like it's the 90s? And why is her uncle driving a car spewing lightning from the exhaust?
The changes have only just begun and Ana has yet to see an entire world changed into a strange mimicry of the one she once knew, with a technologically regressed British Colony who rely on industrialization and magic, and a corporate America that extracts magic instead of oil. But the biggest change? The indigenous territories she calls home are larger and more united, while the British Colonies of Canada are still trying to purchase more land for their own, while harming the communities that exist within currently occupied land.
