    Status: Chapter 63 - Training

    Hello,

I recently came across this story while searching for a Harry Potter fanfiction that went beyond the typical self-inserts where the main character is overpowered, but doesn't change the original plot. Upon reading the synopsis, I was immediately intrigued. While the idea may not be unique, it is still quite rare, and I personally have never read a story where it was executed so well... until now.

I previously wrote a Review for this fic, but that was at chapter 29 and I think the Story deserves that I update the review.
So first of all, like I already said, the story is not following the original plot, which is a huge +. The Character doesn't have any knowledge about the original plot, which makes the story even more unusual. The main character itself is still like how you would imagine someone that is learning magic for the first time. So he is eager to learn and simply curious. The problem is, like the Synopsis says, the school is ruled by Death Eaters, so it's not so easy to study while also trying to fit in to the new school structure. The few original characters all have an important role in the story and are well written, so you don't have to remember twenty different characters and don't know what they are even there for.

The romance is nicely written, and it's nice to see that it's part of the actual plot and not just for character development or just to show how amazing the MC is. Also, there is no Harem in sight. Another Huge + for me.

As one could expect, with the change of the war's victors a few political elements come into play but compared to some other fanfictions where it becomes the main focus, it appeared quite balanced.

Another point I especially like is that the MC doesn't have any major boon like a game system, unlimited Mana or prior knowledge or the like. So the MC has to actually work for the things he wants and needs.
The magic system only gets minimally expanded so far, and it appears like the author doesn't want to delve too much into magic science, which means the time usually spent on explaining magic is used to drive the plot forward. In my opinion, that leads to a great pace of the story.

The Grammar so far was quite good, and even if there were some typos, they were corrected within hours after pointing them out.

All in all, I would give the story five stars and recommend it to anyone that likes Harry Potter, and I would highly recommend it to people who like Harry Potter fan fictions and want something with a touch of originality.

Era of Darkness is a good fanfiction taking place in the world of Harry Potter. The protagonist was born in this world in a pure blood wizard family added in by the author, no reincarnation, transmigration, memory type stuff. It's an alternate universe with unique circumstances that separate itself from the tune of Harry Potter as a plot. It involves dark magic, the 3 curses, and a gray morality, considering the characters are cunning and smart enough to learn how to play for themselves. No harem, and a cute romance, probably more wholesome than all of Harry Potter's couples..

I said this was a good fanfiction, right? That's because I believe a good fanfiction is like this one, in which you imagine it as a whole different story from the original when reading it, the events taking place are changed, and it has great pacing, enough to quickly introduce the need to adapt to the characters while leaving you wanting for more. It has this pacing you feel where the details are all told to easily remember, yet it goes by fast. The characters are people trying to dream in a world where it is challenging to dream of greatness.. Yet they come to life, and quickly adapt to what happens around them.

The worldbuilding is one nice thing too, considering the author follow HP lore decently, only making slight mistakes sometimes, but if it's good enough, you find yourself reading to a point where that's not something bothering you.

The author nailed the characters really well, and is supremely convincing in how they would act in different circumstances.  You can see hints of their olds selves still poking through in their motivations but the direction is drastically different as the circumstances (Harry Potter was the boy who did NOT live) would require.

As the story unfolds, you but by bit get to learn about all the events that happened after Harry's death, how the cards fell and established into a new order. However tragic the situation, life goes on, people go to work, have kids, and send them to Hogwarts.  However the society is not as it was before, people trying to keep their heads down lest they catch the eye of the new regime, or work secretly against it.

Magic is given more depth than displayed in the movies, taking inspiration from fanfics and other Potter media, with overall interesting results. (Though imo stuff from Hogwarts Legacy stands out like a wart the tip of a nose, very out of place in tone and content but only for a few chapters).

    Combat is interesting and suspenseful.

Relationships have actual chemistry, without feeling forced.

Very much a stand-out gem of (alt) Potter World fanfic.

Has been a decent read so far with the grammar being quite good. The story development so far felt smooth so I am looking forward to how it develops.
