Synopsis

Schrodinger's Cat? No. Schrodinger's World.

The world as we know it, is Objective. But what if it wasn't? What if one could collapse the state of the world to whatever they wished. Make their own rules—a world made up not of atoms but anything one's imagination could justify—rhythm, lines, heat, colors, patterns, karma, entropy—anything!

So when Objectivity shattered, Vern, the sole witness to the macabre secrets behind the planetwide genocide, must teach himself to see the world Subjectively as he maneuvers the politically unstable city of Elmhurst. He must grow strong enough to fight back when the time runs out—his own, and the world's.

For, secrets are secrets for a reason. And some do not wish to see them uncovered.

What to expect:

- Completely original 'magic' that can be hard (scientific) or soft (mystical), depending on the user.

- Reverse Engineering of magic system and its concepts.

- Competence Porn (Most characters of importance won't be stupid).

- Somewhat of a slow-burn, but rewarding (mind-bending) progression and character/world-building.

- Victorian Era, Steampunk, Lovecraft themes (subtle).

- Short sections of non MC POV, but around 80-90% will be MC pov in the long run.

- Inspired by Bloodborne, Lord of The Mysteries.

Currently catching up to latest chapter on RoyalRoad 96 (Every 45 minutes). Generally release schedule is 3 times a week. (M, W, F around 11 EST)

Status: chapter 34 – council in the borough

I think I have read enough chapters to make a review, but that kind of thing will always be up for debate so either way here is my review after reading up to chapter 34.

    1. The characters

as the author states, most of the characters are pretty rational and logical, so there is no issue with that depiction. The issue happens because rational and logical characters don't make them fun to read, up until chapter 34 I still didn't feel the MC likable mainly because he was talking in circle about things that were rarely explained or hinted at thus there is a disconnection between the readers (who have little understanding about the world building) and the character (MC) (who have insider knowledge about the world building) and that make me feel disinterest about what happen to the MC. The supporting characters go from the range of "unknown and unexplained but brief" to "why do I have to watch the event unfold from this unknown character that neither the MC nor I the reader know beforehand?". Overall, they share the common similarity of being one-dimensional up to chapter 34 due to a lack of information and understanding about said characters.

    2. World Building

the author has a fierce passion for adding more and more new terms in the mix without explaining or giving any hints about pre-existing terms and thus it made for a lot of convoluted mess and utter confusion about what even happening at all times. Perhaps it was intentional so the reader can feel events unfold like the characters introduced so far with both lacking any idea about what is what, but that doesn't change the fact I dislike it and it take too much effort to search for bits and pieces that barely exist to even get a basic understanding about the world in general while the events at large remain unsolve and unknown.

    3. Storyline/plot development

the MC was pretty passive at the start which is understandable because he knew nothing about anything, thankfully that slowly changed with the more recent chapters the MC slowly took the agency and drove the plot albeit at a snail's pace to unravel whatever happened. So the plot progression is pretty standard except for being a bit too slow which is fine because the author did state it would be slow burn thus it went as expected. Not too fast, not too slow for slow burn type of story.

The story however is mostly still unknown 34 chapters in, the reader pretty much going to learn at the same speed as the MC albeit with some small advantages here and there due to random POV shifts which I will comment on later. So there is not much I can say about the story because I honestly don't know much about it at all.

    4. Power System

to sum it up, it can be boiled down to "I know enough about specific subjects to influence them with my mind magic so I can alter reality". There is a basic structure for how the system works (iirc around chapter 28 or so), but like many things this story like give a few explanations and adds more new terms to the mix.I will admit, the magic system is pretty original according to myself so I agree with what the author said in this regard. I don't dislike it, but I don't like it either mainly because the system at large is still unknown so I can't form a concrete opinion on it as a whole.

    5. POV shift

the pov shift is pretty jarring because it will happen without explanation, hint, or a reason that my brain can understand and reason with. It feel so random that all of a sudden the pov will change to an entirely new character who neither the reader nor the pre-introduced characters ever mention or have an inkling of an idea about who they are, thus I always feel a lack of interest toward these random characters pov because I don't know anything about them before this shift and it doesn't help that stuff just happen around them to then return to the MC's pov after said events end.

    6. Language

English is my 3rd language so I'm sorry if this poorly written review somehow bother someone enough to annoy them. That jest aside, from my rather limited understanding of english language I can read and understand the story well enough to be aware that there doesn't seem to be significant enough misunderstanding or misconception that hinder my desire to write a review thus I can say it is well written for non-english readers.

Overall, I was hooked by the mention of "inspired by bloodborne" but unfortunately there is not much bloodborne inspiration that I can find so far much to my disappointment. The story is well written and the plot is progressing while the characters likely will get better as more chapters are released. Except for the pov shift, uninteresting cast of characters, and minimal world-building I can say it is a pretty alright story hence the rating being average.

It is certainly not even among the bad stories I have read on this site alone, but it is not good enough to be considered among the good stories I have read on this site as well. All in all, there might be people who will enjoy this kind of story, it is just not my cup of tea.

Status: chapter 7 – illeana - soul seer

Only few chapters in, but it feels quite promising already. The writing style works great with the mystery setting, and the whole subjectivity/objectivity power system sounds intriguing. The conversations have been solid. There's a bunch of unexplained terms floating around but I guess they'll be focused on later.

But some characters are very badass. MC is intelligent, while FMC is just straight up queen.
