Time

The times and intervals are given in the decimal system. One day is 10000 "tunts" (from time units) but the unit names are never used normally. If you say "meeting in 1300" it is clear you mean the time interval.

Assuming that the day length is close to a 24h day, then 10 seconds ~ 0001. And 0100 about a quarter of an hour. The time length is standardized aboard ships and stations and often used even on planets (unless the planets strongly deviate in their day length). Only on older origin worlds, one can find other timekeeping systems. Since humanity has expanded a lot, most systems use the decimal system even on the ground, not caring if a planetary day takes 9457 or 12301 instead of 10000.

Gravity and Acceleration

The acceleration of a ship is equivalent to gravity. So if you are pressed backwards in a rollercoaster, it feels the same as gravity. The unit is g, which is the surface gravity of a human standard planet. 0.3 g is the gravity on a very small planet like Mars, which cannot hold an atmosphere, and 0.16 g is the surface of the moon, where the astronauts had trouble moving normally.

1 g does not sound much, but if you could accelerate with 1 g for 90 days, you would then travelling already at 25 % of the speed of light.

Space stations get their "gravity" by rotating. This is not the same as the gravity from acceleration as anyone knows who moved the arms inwards and outwards of a merry-go-round. However, if you make stations big enough, the effects are small enough to be bearable.

Rotation has another disadvantage. Only the outmost parts have the intended "gravity", the decks more inwards have less and less. If there is 1 g at the perimeter, about 1/3rd of the station is not suitable for long term housing. And rotation make docking of ships a little difficult because they have to spiral in. However, as there are no gravity manipulators (and likely won't be until someone can mess with the physical laws of the universe), rotation is the only way to get gravity on a space station.

Fallerian Families

The Fallerian society is run by contratcs. They still know love. However, the actual fertilisation of eggs is an external process and it is only done for reproduction. It is not fun and rather driven by the urge of having offsprings. Fallerians can both lay eggs and fertilise them, but it does not know whether its eggs will be fertile or if it can fertilise. Thus, the contracts are like a marriage for a limited time, limited in case the wishes for offsprings cannot be fulfilled.

Moreover, since the actual act is external, there are no real pleasure involved. They can stimulate each other by some kind of "cuddling" as Marik would say.

Since Fallerians mature quickly, the age of adulthood is 13, a family contract usually runs for 15 years or five if there are no offsprings.

Interstellar Communication

There is simply no realtime interstellar communication. There is no faster-than-light communication in this universe. The only instellar communications are data dumps transported by all the ships .

Hence, there is no real internet-like data access in spaceships, only near stations or planets, and then only the local net. The data dumps each ship transport contain a large archive of the local net, so there can be something of an internet be browsed. But it is all static data, there are not interactive things.

Fallerian

Fallerian is the home system of one of the few space-faring insect-like civilisations. Unlike most other civilisations, several very different species got to space together after they had developed a complex contract system to keep the peace among the different members.

Due to the diversity of the Fallerian society, this system was very easily adapted to incorporate the dealing with new races and generally everyone respected Fallerian contracts.

Their home system has seven stations, one around each planet of their system. Only Fallerian III is around the home planet, about 99% of the Fallerian population lives currently in space. Hence, they are massive orbital producers and given the large costs of getting things from below a gravity wall to space, often a direct import with a slow jump ship from Fallerian is cheaper than getting things up from one's own home planet.
