After a decade of reconstruction Flammin had gone through to become as powerful as those who destroyed her home, the Relic Queen Nike takes the former living paintbrush to complete the final stages of her training: flying. For a small moment, Flammin had an epiphany of Nike, the divine living trident and mentor who bonded with her throughout the rigors of her transformation into what she is now.

This short story is part of my worldbuilding xenofiction project, World of Relics. This project encompasses a world of living objects and relics that came to rise shortly after the Inversion Event, an event that killed both mortals and their gods, stole their souls, and remade them into living objects. I wanted to explore the idea of a character finding their way into StarClan, a *nice* afterlife, after they ended up in the Dark Forest first. I realise that later Warriors books *have* said that there can be a court to decide who gets into StarClan but respectfully that's boring and my idea's better.

Gods? Greek, Norse, Eldritch, you bet!
Mythology? In moderate amounts.
Jokes? So many you'll start to wonder where the actual story is!
Things so obscure to the average person that you might need to grab an encyclopedia? What kind of story would this be without those!
Romance? No, we've got everything else though, including the kitchen sink.
Poop throwing? You bet we do!
A protagonist that uses their mind? Absolutely not! I mean, they aren't even a living being, technically, and they certainly aren't biological in origin.

While this story is tagged as a gender bender, the protagonist is non-binary/gender fluid. What this means is that the pronoun usage is irrelevant in terms of telling the actual story. The pronoun choices made are simply a reflection of the isolated main character's perception of self based on its own understanding of the world, just as the individual inside Plato's cave, would have no understanding of being male or female.
This short story was also inspired by the Chinese novel "Journey to the West" (also known by the titles "Monkey" and "The Monkey King") credited as being written by Wu Cheng'en. <<less
