A door burst open.
“Didn’t your mother teach you to knock?”
“Have you seen the news?”
“I have.”
“How can this be?”
“You know as well as I do that there’s only one explanation.”
“…It’s her.”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Did you know this would happen?”
“It was a possibility. A remote one, but it was there.”
“And you didn’t tell me.”
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t think anyone, not even Ryder, would stoop so low.”
“I have to…”
“You don’t have to do anything. It’s not ready. You’re not ready. It will be at least a month until you’re fit again. If you try to do something now, you’ll only get yourself killed, and that wouldn’t help her, would it now?”
A sigh. “No, it wouldn’t.”
“I’ll do my best to hurry up, but this is delicate work. But I think I can--”
“No, don’t rush it. It’s better to delay for a few days if necessary, to be sure it works without a hitch.”
“Are you sure? What about her?”
“She…” Another sigh. “We’ll just have to hope she doesn’t get seriously hurt until we’re ready.”
“Let’s hope so, my friend.”

The plot thickens. My guess is that Mark and the doctor didn’t actually die, they’ve just faked their deaths for some reason. Mark probably was gravely injured though. Are they planning on finally making a 6th morpher? Defender silver or something?
I really hope the doctor comes out of hiding soon so she can alter Stephanie’s morpher so it doesn’t have the male form anymore. Poor Steph doesn’t need more bouts with extreme dysphoria
I think you're totally on track here. It would be awesome if Mark was still alive. I figured the bad guy was the doc to begin with but maybe not. And this adds some much welcome additional suspense to the plot. Though I would have been okay with things being more black and white it's always more entertaining if that's not the case.
@Emmykat The guess is also partially based on the power ranger series this series is taking heavy influence from where
the original red ranger that "died" turns out to still be alive and later returns. I think this series won't have the old red ranger acting like a jacka** though like what happened in the TV series.
Possibly Mark will occupy a compressed role of 6th semi independent ranger and the returning ranger
@FallingLeaf @Emmykat One thing to note, is that I am a MASSIVE Power Ranger / Super Sentai / Kamen Rider fan. Like, it's incredible how much I like those series
so I'm borrowing some elements from some of them, but also I'm going with my own story (which is already decided and with an outline written in full). There will be similarities, yes, but the genre is nearly fifty years old at this point so some tropes have been used multiple times over.
@OfficiallyZoe It’s fine, it’s clear that even though it’s heavily inspired by that series this is still very much it’s own thing. The transgender angle is one I don’t think any of those series have taken, and certainly not in this context
@OfficiallyZoe I'm all for it. I used to watch power rangers religiously as a kid so I'm super down with this story. So tropes or no, you have my attention lol. I enjoy your writing, so happy to see where you take it all.
Yeah that was my guess too - they were doing something the military wouldn't allow and needed some space
@nekomimi If I had to guess I think the attack was genuine, but the doctor managed to get both herself and Mark out of the situation alive but not before Mark was gravely wounded. I think they’re taking advantage of being presumed to be dead to make/complete something some people in the army may not entirely approve of though like you said
