Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 226. Wicked V
Rose's eyes widened in surprise as she stared at Ilex.
"How... How did you find out about our meeting?" Rose's voice quivered with a mix of shock and suspicion. "I never spoke of it to anyone. It was meant to be our secret."
Ilex's laughter echoed through the hall, a sarcastic symphony that sent shivers down Rose's spine. His amusement at her bewilderment only served to deepen the sense of betrayal that permeated the air.
"Oh, Rose," Ilex sneered, his tone dripping with contempt. "Did you truly believe that your secret tryst could remain hidden from prying eyes? Lady Ivetta Rosemond Crowheart, your closest confidante, revealed all to me. She believed that I loved her, that she held a special place in my heart. In her desperation to win my affections, she divulged every detail she knew about your forbidden liaison."
Ilex's cynical smile deepened, revealing a darkness within him that sent shivers down Rose's spine. His words dripped with malice, each syllable laced with an insidious satisfaction.
"Maybe you never thought that your foolish request would ultimately lead him to his demise," Ilex taunted, his voice oozing with contempt. The memory of that day played vividly in his mind, etching itself into the deepest recesses of his consciousness. He recalled Angel's radiant smile, a sight that had irked Ilex to no end as if it were a cruel mockery of his own existence.
Rose's disbelief washed over her like a tidal wave, her voice trembling as she struggled to comprehend the gravity of Ilex's revelation. The realization that Angel had met his untimely end solely due to the outcome of a hunting competition sent shockwaves through her soul.
"You... you killed him... simply because he won in a hunting competition?" Rose's words faltered, her voice laced with incredulity. Her mind raced to grasp the absurdity of the situation, the sheer senselessness of Ilex's actions.
A glint of sadistic pleasure danced within Ilex's eyes as he reveled in Rose's disbelief. He delighted in her torment, finding a perverse joy in the destruction of her world.
"Just a competition, you say?" Ilex's voice dripped with sarcasm. "At the age of seventeen, we stood on the precipice of a defining competition, one that would determine the rightful heir to the throne of Asteria," Ilex began, his words laden with a sense of bitter irony. "Angel, he was meant to lose, to step aside and fulfill his role as Prince of Asteria. But you, Rose, you disrupted those plans."
A flicker of frustration crossed Ilex's features as he recalled the intensity of that fateful day. The significance of the competition extended far beyond mere sport, for it symbolized power, authority, and control over an entire kingdom. Angel's unexpected victory had shattered the carefully orchestrated scheme, and Ilex could not forgive the disruption to his ambitions.
"By winning that competition, Angel defied my father's orders and disrupted the balance of power," Ilex continued, his voice laced with a mixture of admiration and resentment. "But I had to admit, he possessed exceptional combat skills, an unwavering loyalty, and a remarkable fearlessness. He embodied the qualities of a perfect war puppet, a weapon to be wielded at my father's command."
Rose's anger flared, her voice laced with righteous fury. The cruelty of Ilex's actions, and his relentless pursuit of Angel even in death, ignited a fire within her that refused to be quelled.
"But after you executed him, he left Asteria! He sought no revenge, no retribution!" Rose's voice thundered through the hall, each word punctuated with an unwavering resolve. "Why, then, do you persist in your relentless pursuit of his destruction? Why do you now set your sights upon Euphorion?"
Ilex's eyes blazed with a mixture of resentment and determination as he locked his gaze with Rose's. The intensity of his stare was palpable, his words seething with an unyielding desire for retribution.
"As long as he breathes, my soul shall know no peace," Ilex declared, his voice filled with venomous conviction. "News of his ascension to the throne of Euphorion sent shivers down my spine. A man of power, a man who could harbor resentment and seek vengeance for the injustices he believed were inflicted upon him. I couldn't risk waiting for him to strike first. I had to act."
A flicker of regret momentarily crossed Ilex's face, but he quickly masked it with a mask of defiance. The memory of his failed attempt to eliminate Angel, the carefully orchestrated plan that had crumbled under the weight of unforeseen circumstances, haunted him. The taste of bitterness clung to his tongue as he continued his explanation.
"Unfortunately, my impatience got the better of me," Ilex confessed, his voice tinged with frustration. "Even with the poison I obtained from your uncle, intending to use it as a means to eliminate Angel and all who stood in his way, my attack was met with unforeseen resistance. The tide turned against me, and Angel seized the opportunity to retaliate. He used my failed assault as justification to declare war on Asteria."
