Skill management is pretty difficult job, so sometimes they won’t be entirely related to the situation, for example this after fight result.

Whew, that was exhausting. In the end, this lich duke wasn’t really that hard to beat. It was hard to find a way to damage him, but if we had a way to escape from him, then we could just do it, because its attacks were very predictable.

Wait, am I forgetting something? Oh, I guess I have to free the catkin. When I activated the ring, she quickly jumped out of the shadow and came closer to me. Then without any reason she started hitting me with her tiny fists. It didn’t hurt but I was so baffled that I had no idea how to react.

I looked into her eyes, and saw tears in them. I guess she was worried, and disliked the idea of being unable to help. But I couldn’t just let her die against an enemy like that. I wiped her tears off and then pat her on the head. I don’t know why did I pat her, but the temptation was irresistible.

She was cheered up by this action, so this was fine anyway. Come to think of this, in the fight I succeeded in changing the shape of my limb using spirit transformation. I was training to use it since I got the skill, but it was the first time I really succeeded.

The real reason I was practicing, was to give myself a semi human form or at least change my current one to give me ability to speak. I longed for conversation, and if I could do this, I could finally talk with the girl.

Maybe I don’t need to change my physical form? Maybe I can get a skill for communication, if I try to talk in my spirit form? Well, no harm trying. I changed into a spirit, confusing the catgirl in the process, and proceeded to change myself.

I of course failed to give myself a human like form, I failed at becoming anything but a blob of a spirit, but I think I recreated the part that made sound close enough. I tried talking, and again, I failed. I began to suspect that humans didn’t talk only with their mouths, but there was something more to it.

Anyway, I reverted my form to a spider’s one, and tried one more thing while still being ethereal. I touched the head of the catgirl and tried sending mana into her. I was imagining it being shaped like a words, because if I can’t use sound, I might as well use something else.

But there was a problem.

I had no idea how words looked like. I also had no idea what language did the cat girl know. I couldn’t understand the mercenary guy earlier, and I’ve never heard a word from her, so there was a very high possibility that I could not communicate with her smoothly. Wait, what language was I using to think anyway?

[Proficiency reached. Gained skill [Telepathy] ]

Oh, that’s a bit unexpected, but I won’t complain, the language thing can be left unanswered for now, because it’s not really that important, as long as I can think. But I didn’t think I really would get a skill just from sending deformed mana to someone’s head, because if I did, I would try it a lot sooner. Okay, let’s try this.

[“Hello”]

[“Ehhhh!?”]

When I tried greeting her, all I got was this dumbfounded look, and her searching around, seemingly not knowing that it was me who was speaking to her. Well, seeing her surprised like that was kind of funny, so I waited a bit before clarifying.

[“It’s me, the spider.”]

[“But how!?”]

Oh, so she accepted it without a hitch huh? Also I guess language doesn’t matter over telepathy.

[“I got a skill that lets me communicate with others”]

[“That’s so cool!”]

Oh, her eyes were sparkling so much I thought the light might hurt mine. That’s the enthusiasm.

[“So, now that we can finally talk, tell me what’s your name”]

She looked at me with  questioning eyes.

[“I don’t have one.”]

[“If you don’t have a name, then how were your parents calling you before?”]

She looked like she had fallen in thought, but snapped out of it quickly.

[“Felicia”]

Thanks Dradel

[“So you do have a name.”]

[“No, I don’t.”]

I was a bit confused by this exchange by now.

[“So, if your parents called you Felicia, why isn’t this your name?”]

[“I didn’t attend the naming ceremony.”]

Oh so that’s why. Well, that doesn’t really explain anything.

[“And what is this naming ceremony?”]

[“You don’t know?”]

I nearly facepalmed there, if I knew I wouldn’t be asking. I guess apart from being an outstanding genius, she’s still a small child. I will have to take this into consideration.

[“A naming ceremony is when a priest give the child a name, that way it’s registered in the system.”]

Okay, I guess that explains why I didn’t see a name when I appraised her. Anyway this is my first real conversation apart from the ones with my mother and a weirdo in a cape, so I was a bit excited. Well, I was talking with a small child so there wasn’t any chance for a complicated subject but still, not having only yourself to talk to is refreshing.

Oh, something has appeared in the place of dead boss. I came closer to see what it was, and saw the usual skill crystal. By habit I picked it up, with a bit of excitement because I was wondering what I would get from a stronger enemy.

[Obtained skill [Devour] ]

Okay?
