I worked hard and managed to increase my barrier skill to level three yesterday.  My barrier is now able to become larger, and I assume it is stronger. I had also managed to discover two new barriers. The first is the soundproof barrier, any noise that happens inside will not escape. The second is the magic barrier. This barrier blocks magic much better than the original, but it allows physical objects to pass through. The original barrier blocks both magic and physical attacks but is not that strong. I can't break it by punching it, but enough magic attacks and it will shatter like glass. I have high hopes for the future though, I feel that once I max out the skill level, I will be able to do some interesting things with barriers.

But today is for hunting and planning my new home. I made sure I had all my supplies. I really need to make a weapon. Alex studied kendo in his life, so I want to make a katana. I even know how to do it in the traditional way. So, my house is definitely going to have a smithy.

After I checked and made sure I had everything I would need, I set off into the forest. After about five minutes I started hearing signs of wildlife. The beast suppressant really works well. But I don't think it will even bother stronger enemies. I wonder if there is a stronger version of it?

Oh, speaking of, there are some herbs. I had walked into a large patch of herbs, some of which are used in the repellant. After gathering them all I continued on my way. I walked as quietly as possible, trying my best to not make a sound. I had one major problem with my barriers currently, they are not mobile. Once I place one, it stays there. I would love to cast the soundproof barrier on myself, so I could run through the forest without making noise, but I don't know how. So, for now, we sneak.

After I had tiptoed through the forest for about thirty minutes, my detection pickup up some massive lifeforms to the south. I hesitated because they felt really powerful, but they are close to my home, I should investigate. Eventually I talked myself into it so I changed course and walked that direction, making sure to mark the trees that I passed by with my dagger. I had made it with Creation magic, but it said low quality in the description... I guess I can't just start out making legendary gear. I was sneaking my way closer and closer, finally I heard movement ahead. The wind was blowing into my face already, so I don't have to worry about my scent at the moment.

As I moved closer, I heard a mournfully soul chilling song echoing through the forest. I immediately felt tears dripping down my face. When I approached closer there was a large part of the forest that was burnt and destroyed. The sun overhead was covered by clouds flashing with lightning. There in the center of the devastated landscape was a large red giant, standing at least eighteen feet tall. It had large black horns curving out of its forehead, and tusks extending from the corner of its mouth. I hesitated to use Analyze, but I noticed there was something strange going on. It had its hands extended grasping something. But its arms were grey, and the grey kept creeping up further and further. I decided to use Analyze as I was pretty sure this Devil was turning to stone. That is what it looked like, the devil from Alex's world. Analyze

I was so shocked I almost fell on my ass. A Legendary ranked monster! The grey was spreading faster and faster, the Oni roared in anger. In moments the grey had reached its chest, and all the while, the mournful song continued. As the Oni roared in defiance, I covered my ears. It was not as loud as the Dragons roar was, but it still hurt. Finally, the grey crawled up its neck, there was fear in the Oni's eyes as the grey continued creeping higher and higher. The grey finally engulfed its entire head and the statue exploded into a large cloud of grey dust. It the cloud I saw something bright red fall towards the ground.

I coughed as the dust engulfed the entire area. I used wind magic to blow it away and clear the air. As the mournful song still continued, I approached slowly, and there broken on the ground, I saw the most beautiful bird I had ever seen. It looked like I would imagine a Pheonix would look, but the color of its feathers continued to shift and change as it continued its song. An ever-shifting dance of white and crimson. The shifts in color seemed to be in tune with its song, it was mesmerizing.  Its tail was very long and had seven colors and looked like they were made of gemstones. Pearl, bronze, emerald, diamond, crystal, gold, and copper were the colors of its tail feathers and the colors continued to shift and blend up into its body and wings, like it was made of ever-changing glowing gemstones. If it didn't look so broken it would have looked like something Divine.

I approached slowly, and warily cast High Heal on the bird. Its eyes snapped open, and I saw intelligence in them. I remembered what the Dragon had said and didn't dare to use Analyze on it. It had after all just killed a Legendary monster. Unfortunately, I suddenly felt that same feeling that I had from the Dragon, that this bird was looking through me, though it didn't seem quite as invasive as the Dragon had. I could tell that it was in my mind though, looking at my thoughts and memories. It only lasted a short second. But that was enough for me to stop healing and back pedal in fear. I was shaking and crying again, I had only wanted to heal it. Why...I cast my strongest barrier and curled up into the fetal position on the ground.

Suddenly its song changed, and somehow, I could tell it was one of acceptance and forgiveness. The change only lasted a few seconds though and the song once again became mournful and sad. The bird used its broken wings and beak to crawl towards me. I just sat there on the ground and stared blankly. It crawled and sang until it was right before me, and that's when I noticed how big the bird was, it was larger than a full-grown human. It raised its head and shattered my barrier with a light peck of its beak and continued to crawl towards me. Once it was right in front of me it lowered its head and looked me straight in the eye. I was still shaking in fear, but I still attempted to cast High Heal once again. I assumed it was what it wanted. But the bird was suddenly once again in my mind looking at who I was and who I would become. Suddenly the search was finished, and her feathers all flashed Emerald in what felt like acceptance, then its feathers turned back to her white coloration while blue swirled in harmony with its song.

It was still looking me right in the eye. Its eye was also seven colors and looked like the most beautiful jewel I had ever seen. Suddenly I heard a young female voice speak directly to my mind. It could still talk to me even though it was singing.

~"Do not waste your magic child, I have started my final song, once begun it cannot be stopped, there is no saving me now. That brute caught me right after I had given birth, I normally would have killed him instantly, but it took all my power to protect my daughter. Even though I am now bound to die, will you give me your aid?"~

"I w-was already t-trying, if I can't heal you h-how can I h-help you?"

~"Hold out your hand child, and swear on your magic and name that you will not betray my trust, I beg you to do this for me, think of it as my last request"~

I was in doubt, in serious doubt. I just wanted an orc sandwich...

~"Quickly child, I don't have much time left! "~

"F-fine, I, Remmi Ekatn Eotia, swear on my magic and my name, that I shall not break your trust as long as your request to me is just and within my capabilities." After I said my oath my body flashed with magic, I was still scared out of my mind, and seeing a Legendary monster turned to dust did not help calm my heart. I was just hoping to make it out of this alive.

After my oath, the bird looked completely shocked for a few seconds, but suddenly shook its head as if to clear it. All the while she continued singing her song relentlessly.

~" I request you form a contract to protect my daughter. Love her and care for her and become the family I no longer can. You too are alone and so you can help and comfort each other. And listen to me well Remmi of Ἑστία, never again say your name aloud. Never tell anyone your name again, unless you have the strength to slay the Gods themselves, you must keep your name a secret. Nobody can know of it!"~

"Ehhhhh, why not? And your daughter, where is she? How can I help her? I can barely help myself you know; you should know, you looked at my memories right! I am so weak I have almost died on numerous occasions already! How can you trust me with your daughter?"

~"There is no one else I can trust more than you. Now hold your hand in front of me, I will hand her to you, she will know how to look after herself after the first year, until then she will subsist off of your Mana. As for the matter of your name, it would be too dangerous for you to know the truth until you can protect your thoughts from the strongest of foes. Don't worry about that old lizard, he will keep your secret, he is interested in you after all, otherwise he would have killed you, and probably the rest of the continent for your offence. As for your strength, it will naturally grow in time. Now hurry please, your hand!" ~

I held my hand out at her final reprimand. She pulled out one of her feathers and quickly pecked my hand before placing he feather in it, making sure it was smeared with my blood. As I was about to jerk back my hand I watched in shock as the feather morphed into a small seven colored egg, and a giant golden magic circle flared around us.

~"Her name shall be Kanta, say her name aloud to finalize the familial contract."~

As soon as she said that a message from my status popped up.

The Adarna Bird wishes to form a familial contract with you please give her a name to accept the contract.

"Her name shall be Kanta." I said with conviction.

The light flashed and I was left with an egg in my hand.

~"Thank you, Remmi. Please care for her and tell her how much I loved her and wished I could have been with her, and remember what I said about your name, tell no one. Goodbye, and thank you..."~

As soon as I heard that last thought that sounded like a sob, her song ended with a sense of somber finality. When it did her entire body disintegrated into golden dust that quickly swirled around the egg. Slowly the dust spun around in a vortex and was all absorbed by the egg. This all happened very fast, and as soon as the dust was entirely absorbed by the egg it flashed in a bright light and vanished.

I panicked for a moment until I noticed there was a seven colored feather tattoo on the back of my right hand. "Well that just happened." I got up off the ground once I realized I was still inside of a dangerous forest. I looked around at my surroundings, the entire area was still devastated and covered in stone dust, making it look like the whole area had been turned to stone. I shook my head at the unbelievable happenings. First the Damn dragon and now this. What is wrong with this forest...

I turned around and followed my tree markings back towards home. As I was walking back, I looked at my hand sporting a colorful new tattoo. I'm too young to get tattoos you know.  I wondered what the deal was, so I decided to channel some of my Mana to my hand. As it gathered, I focused and could tell a very small amount was being absorbed into the feather. I finally made it back to my base and walked down to the lake and sat at my picnic table. I ran my hand over the cool and smooth marble as I pondered everything that happened. I sighed. "I am weak." What do I need to do to get strong exactly. Thinking back that Oni had maxed out magic. How did he do it? Was he just really old, does it take a long time? I looked at my new tattoo. I swear I saw the colors shift a bit. Thinking of the bird's song, I decided to sing a song for it from Alex's world. A song from one of his favorite musicians. A song that John Lennon wrote and sang when he was grieving for his own Mothers loss.

"Half of what I say is meaningless,
But I say it just to reach you, Julia
Julia, Julia
Ocean child calls me
So I sing the song of love
Julia
Julia, seashell eyes
Windy smile calls me
So I sing the song of love
Julia
Her hair of floating sky is shimmering
Glimmering in the sun
Julia, Julia
Morning moon touch me
So I sing the song of love
Julia
When I cannot sing my heart
I can only speak my mind
Julia
Julia, sleeping sand, silent cloud
Touch me
So I sing a song of love
Julia
Hmm, hmm, hmm
Calls me
So I sing the song of love for
Julia, Julia, Julia"

As I sang, I watched the colors of my feather tattoo shift and change. at the end the color turned mostly blue, emitting a feeling of sadness and despair. I was crying as well. Finally realizing that Kanta must be able to hear and understand me, even as an unhatched egg.

I stared at the feather and said, "Listen up Kanta, your mother may be gone now, but you are not alone. You will never be alone as long as I am here. I didn't know your mother for long, and she scared the crap out of me when we met. But I know one thing for sure, she loved you a lot. You were all she thought about in her final moments. She decided I was trustworthy enough to be your new family, or maybe she was just that desperate. I promise you though, I will love you as much as I can, and we will always be there for each other. We will be a family and I am very much looking forward to your hatching, I have been so lonely here for so long, so I will never regret having you with me. Just try to remember I am super weak, so don't turn me to stone by accident or anything." The feathers colors shifted through various shades of blue while I spoke and settled on its normal rainbow color.

As I sat and watched the water of the lake ripple from the wind, I wondered why I was placed in that orphanage. What the... Adarna? Yeah, what the Adarna Bird told me is kind of scary. I have to keep my name a secret from everyone, to not even speak it out loud ever, unless I can slay a God. Seriously! Does some God really hate my parents or something, and would hear about me and kill me just for being related to them? Scary! What the hell is up with that? "What do you think Kanta?" The feather just rippled with yellow and settled back on its normal colors.

I chatted with Kanta for a while longer, to keep her company and because I was trying to figure out how color-based communication works. It seems like blue is sad, dull yellow is confusion, bright yellow gold is happiness, joy or laughter depending on the shade, pink is love. I'm going to assume red is anger, I of course did nothing to test this theory. Well, the more I talk to her the more I will figure it out. Personally, I love the idea of a language based on color. Maybe I can use my illusion magic to change my color in the future so I can communicate with her better. I decided to test it and overlaid my skin with an illusion that it was bright yellow. "What do you think Kanta?" I got a flash of bright gold in response. "Haha, well I'm not sure this color suits me." I looked at my reflection by summoning an ice wall with my magic. I played around a bit by shifting my skin to different colors. I still didn't try crimson; afraid it would upset Kanta.

After I had played around enough, I decided it was time to get started on my house. Well, the plan for my house anyway. I got out some paper I had made from wood with creation magic. I also got out some ink and a quill I had made last winter during the time of great boredom.

Hmm The first floor should have an entryway leading to the den, to the left will be a kitchen, basement stairs, Dining Room, and pantry. To the right of the Den will be my smithy. Straight and in the back of the den will be a hallway with four rooms leading to the stairs to the second floor. One of the four rooms will be the first-floor bathroom, the top floor will have a massive bathroom, the master bedroom, an office I guess... Not that I will have much business. I guess I could keep track of crop production or something.

"Oh, Kanta will you want your own room once you hatch?" The feather shifted between yellow and blue divided right down the middle.

"Hmm well how about I make you a nice room full of windows right beside mine and you of course will be welcome in my room anytime you want. I will set up some nice perches for you all over the house as well. " The feather turned completely golden then settled back to its staple rainbow-like hue. I will take that as a happy agreement.

I looked down at my drawing and added in doors and windows to my blueprints. Kanta's room was pretty much all windows, I put it on the corner on the other side of mine. So, two walls were solid windows from floor to ceiling. After that I added doorways and windows where appropriate. Oh yeah it of course needs an attic as well right! maybe a raised one with lots of windows as well, I could make it an art studio or something. It will have a great view of the surroundings as well. I will have many windows up there. Oh, just in case I will make some escape tunnels as well going from the basement to hidden exits in various places. Can never be too careful after all.

I decided I was getting hungry and as I never caught any meat, I decided to walk to the river and catch some fish. My little cheat spot was still there, and I still had the cages. I put all the cages back on, and soon enough I had fish once again jumping my wall right into my cages. I grabbed a few and started a small fire to cook them while more were gathering in my cages. I saw my hand flash as the feather turned green.

"Hungry as well Kanta? Your mom said you would eat my Mana until you hatch right?" The feather changed to blue then to yellow. Hmmm envy to sadness to acceptance right. I decided to channel mana to my hand and keep it there while I was cooking and eating. I closed my eyes and could once again feel a tiny trickle of Mana flowing into the feather.

"Should I keep the Mana flowing all the time?" The feather flashed bright gold. "Sigh, I will try my best, remember though I am weak, and I will have to sleep eventually." The feather flashed a dim yellow.  "Hmmm so acceptance but you're not happy about it?" The feather flashed a yellow that shifted rapidly through many different shades and hues. "Was that an eye roll?" The feather flashed a bright yellow. Haha you sure cheeky. Well let's eat for now... I kept true to my word and kept Mana flowing towards the feather. I realized that by the time I was done eating there was a kind of link from my Mana to the feather, I no longer had to consciously supply it. I then used Creation magic to prepare all the fish. I stored all the excess parts in storage for later.

Since it was already afternoon, I realized I still needed to plant my second field. There had been one thing after another, and I just had not got around to it yet. So, for the rest of the day, I planted wheat, corn and potatoes in the second field. I will be able to make lots of things with this many ingredients. Next year maybe I will expand the fields even more. I can store everything in my storage and keep it from going bad, so there is no limit on how much I can stockpile.

I should continue making seeds whenever I can for next year, I can also store them after all, and I will need many more. After I finished planting my second field, I finished the day by making a large compost bin the size of a dumpster. I even made a stone stairway going up so I could toss things in easier. I added all the fish parts I had ever collected and some soil and leaves I had gathered from the forest. By the time I finished everything it was already dark, so I decided to go to bed. I spread my regular beast repellants around and crawled up into my tree. As had become my ritual, I used Clean on myself twice as I climbed up the ladder.

As I was laying there I started to cry. Every time I lay up here, I remember that dragon, and now a bird. Both of which invaded my mind and thoughts. I really thought I was going to die...My crying paused as I heard a song being lightly sang. I realized it was coming from my hand, and though it sounded muffled, it still seemed to calm my nerves and make happiness and contentment swell up from nowhere in my heart. I wiped my tears," thank you Kanta, I don't know how you did it, but I feel much better now... My tattoo glowed as it flashed from blue to yellow. "Goodnight Kanta..."

The next day I woke up bright and early and did my morning chores, which included watering the crops, scattering beast repellent, and eating breakfast. A delicious fish sandwich... What I wouldn't give to have some livestock. Cows and chickens and goats... I want milk...

I walked over to my bunker is and removed the sod and grass I had covered it with. I then cleaned it with water magic. Pressure washing is a cinch with magic. Afterward I made a stone bench using Earth Magic and sat down to think. Well, I think the foundation should be strong enough, but I plan on it being almost three stories tall. I should make some iron rebar and mix it in thoroughly throughout the initial foundation. Which means I will have to gather a lot of Iron sand to do so. Even using creation, it will take me weeks to gather and make enough rebar. I might be wasting my time, but I want to feel safe in my new house. And I will always be worrying if it is going to collapse in the back of my mind if I don't reinforce it.

The next step is to raise stone walls and improve the material bit by bit. I will use wood for the second story floor and ceiling. I will finish it off with making the attic and roof, I guess I will go with ceramic shingles. I will need lots of scaffolding... After that it should be installing the wooden framework for the inner walls, the pipes for water and waste removal, and the staircases. Making all that rebar and pipes will hopefully improve my smithing enough to make a decent sword and some armor as well.

Then it will just be installing the insulation, the inner wall panels, also wood, and whatever flooring for each room. Mostly wooden flooring, maybe some carpet in the bedrooms, tile for the bathrooms and kitchen. Well that will give me a good base to work off of, then I can worry about everything else. Toilets and baths, oven and cabinets. Sinks...?

After I spent an hour thinking everything through and writing it down, I glanced at the forest tree line. I want a tall and thick wall; it will also probably need to be reinforced with metal... Thats a lot of walls to build. It might have to wait awhile, maybe even until next year.

So, my biggest issues will be getting enough metal, clay and wood I will need to build everything. I don't know if I can get enough with just the iron sand in the river nearby. I glanced up at the mountain range in the distance where the river flowed from. I have never explored that way... I was worried about what may live in or around the mountains. Who knows where that damned Dragon parks his massively scaly ass when he is not scaring little girls and breaking beautiful brand-new greenhouses! I guess I will have to follow the river to the mountains and collect whatever metal and clay I can along the way. Maybe I will get lucky and find a mine or something... This is a long-term project for this year, it will probably take me till the beginning of fall if everything goes well... At least I will be ready by then, I can hunt and stockpile meat all year for the winter, so I won't run out again. My crops should grow in around sixty to a hundred days depending on what it is. Not counting the fruit trees of course, those will take years. Sigh, I want some peaches... "Well, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, let's go!"
