Once you're past a certain age, birthdays are bad enough already, even without a pandemic that's keeping everyone isolated. But when an overly-energetic roommate gets involved, this one takes an sudden turn... culminating in the reveal of an unexpected (and unwelcome) piece of information that will haunt our protagonist for the rest of their life.

(but don't worry, I promise there's a happy ending)
Apparently I'm still a spam account according to the website, but I just want to recommend this novel. I love Rooibos' commitment to writing with compassion and including exactly as many characters as is necessary, no more no less. It's another clean beautifully brilliant story of self love in the face of our greatest detractors. Thank you Rooibos <3

I really love this story. I'll admit I sat the main twist coming lol but it was still great watching it play out and the main character figure things out. I can really relate to being your own worst critic and being unfair to yourself and also I love dense

rooibos has an incredible knack for internal monologue. lucky for us, the major conflict of this story takes place entirely within the main character's head, and *oh boy* is it compelling
read this if you want to want to feel warm murmurings in your heart, then feel your stomach drop out from under you, and then involuntarily make a soft "oh" sound (likely overflow from how full your heart inevitably gets during the final chapter)

I've got a bone to pick with this author. Her story was supposed to be something rather boring to pick up before bed to get sleepy (someone's shut in for quarantine with just their roommate, and eventually realizes they're trans... how engaging can that be?). And yet! I found myself utterly sleep deprived the next day, because I had to read the ENTIRE THING.
... worth it!
As has been mentioned by others, the author does internal dialog very well. Also, she captures so many tiny little experiences and moments of what it feels like to be trans so very well that it's hard not to get sucked in if you can relate. And to top it all off, in spite of the utterly mundane setting, the story is spiced up with a fun twist you won't see coming that I won't spoil.
