Machine Civilization is beset by nightmarish creatures from the stars, called "humans". A young machine named Aria receives a vision of the impending collapse of the Firmament and end of civilization, and sets out to become an Iterator, a practitioner of ancient martial arts that surpass the laws of reality, in order to challenge a mysterious organization spreading through the galaxy like a virus.
