A casino, a place I’ve never been to in my life and only heard of it. From the casinos I remember were the ones from movies, in my school we played a similar game to the ones that are played in a casino. But, I can barely remember how the game works.
“So… your plan is that we should gamble?”, I asked Willow. “Do ya have any other plan?”, Willow said as if knowing the answer already.
“Okay, I understand. But I don’t know how a casino is works exactly.”, I told him. “Don’t worry, we’ll play one of the easiest games, okay?”, Willow reassured me.
“Fine…”, I mumbled as we entered the casino, the bodyguard looking people sent a glance towards us, our clothes weren’t abnormal but maybe they weren’t really adequate for the place we’re setting foot in.
The bodyguard opened the door as if saying ‘you are free to enter’, thus we accepted his generosity and set foot inside the casino.
“WOW!”, Azure was amazed by the inside of the dome shaped building, if there was one word to describe it then it would be ‘shiny’.
The ceiling was plastered with magic lights and the walls were painted pure white, one would even begin to question what material was used.
“This place is literally a gold mine…”, I muttered as made myself as small as possible.
I felt like I was in a convention full of people alone, shrinking myself to make sure nobody would even recognize my existence.
“Why’re ya bein’ so shy right now?”, Willow looked behind him, I was hiding on his back like a child. “Don’t worry, give me just a couple of seconds for me to get used to it.”
There were people from all races, dwarves and elves were disputing each other over games, and so on. There were even Demi-human barmaids and elves as well, there was even a bunny girl!
“The game we’ll be gamblin’ on is ‘Roulette’.”, Willow announced. “Do you know how to play it?”, he asked me before I could overreact.
‘Roulette… are you serious!’, I remember led playing it once though we weren’t betting actual money back then. “Yeah, I think I still know.”
‘If the rules haven’t changed that is.’, I wanted to say but I kept myself shut as we arrived at the roulette table, there were four people already there.
“Good evenin’, y’all wouldn’t mind us joinin’ in on the fun?”, Willow casually asked. “Ho? So yer here ta gamble as well, fine take a seat all a ye. We just entered the game as well.”, the dwarf on the other side of the table accepted us in.
We sat down and a woman came over presented us with chips of different colors. “If you wish to participate, you’ll have to exchange currency for the designated chips.”
I’ll explain to you the rules of roulette from the beginning, or what I remember the rule being.
Before the game starts you have to exchange money for the chips an example would be let’s just say you give in ten ‘Zelts’ and you receive a chip with the number ‘one’ written on it. That’s pretty much the value of the chip you received, at the end of the game you would exchange the chips you’ve gained for real money. For example: You have ten chips with the number ‘one’ written on it, so you’ll receive one hundred ‘Zelts’.
The dealer also known as the ‘coupier’, stands behind the table, which also contains the wheel and the betting area. The players can bet until the dealer puts his/her hand up and says ‘no more bets’.
There are different ways to wager, like ‘even numbers’ which are numbers like: two, four, six and so on. Or uneven numbers like: one, three, five, seven, nine and etc. You can also bet on colors, from red and black. If you place in black, that means that the moment the little ball in the wheel falls in a black slot you win double the amount of chips placed. If you pic a specific number then it’ll be 3x, however people choose mostly even or uneven and black or red because it’ll increase their chances.
I gave in one hundred Zelts, and so did Willow and Azure. That was almost all the remaining money we had, though, most of it came from the remains of the nights that we had originally extended to and the rewards of the quest I did with Gray and his party.
My color was blue, Willows was red, Azure was black, and the remaining four players had yellow, green, purple and brown.
“Alright! Everyone start placing your bets!”, the woman who distributed the chips announced. And thus we began betting.
We had one minute and some remaining time after she started rolling the wheel, or when everyone had placed their bets she’ll start rolling.
I had ten chips and Azure and Willow too, the reason why we’re playing separately was due to the chance of one of us losing. If the the color or number you bet on doesn’t appear you lose your chip, that’s why this game is mostly more indicated for beginners because this game is more about luck than strategy.
The other players mostly placed their bets on uneven numbers and black color, I picked up two chips of mine and placed them on red and Willow did the same.
“Seriously, I’m sweating balls right now.”, I sighed, I haven’t felt this excitement ever since that one time where I had spent over ninety ‘Holy Quartz’ for a chance of getting ‘King Arthur’ in a gacha.
“Yeah, games like these’re mostly nerve racking.”, Willow whispered, I gazed over to Azure who was smiling happily.
Her innocence made you think she was a child, and she technically is. “Miss, are you going to bet?”, the dealer woman in a black suit asked, it was probably to make her look manly but it made her look more attractive instead.
Azure rubbed her chin in a detective like manner. “I’ll bet everything on seven!”, she places all of her black chips on the number seven and smiled innocently.
Every player snickered. “… I guess she’s out of the game already…”, the man next to the dwarf whispered to himself.
‘AZURE! What the hell are you doing!???!’, I questioned her sanity in my mind, but I gave up hope the moment I realized she was simply here to have ‘fun’.
The dealer started rolling the wheel. “No more bets!”, the small silver ball rolled in the opposite direction of the spinning wheel, I could feel my heart beat increasing considerably.
Willow was calm as if he was sure that he had nothing to fear, and Azure glances at the wheel with curiosity. The wheel began to slow down and the silver ball was hitting the spaces of the numbers.
Everyone’s attention was drawn towards the silver ball, despite we all being int eh beginning of the game.
Suddenly, the ball stopped. “It’s… number seven, color red!”, she announced and all of the players became flabbergasted.
“THERES NO WAY!!! THE GIRL MUST HAVE CHEATED!!!”, the same man who made fun of her didn’t believe the odds.
“Unfortunately, the magic item didn’t react to her using magic, so unless she somehow predicted this odd of happening.”, the dealer who was also very surprised by the outcome of the wheel.
The magic item she was talking about was the small bell like looking thing on the left of her, I felt some mana coming from it so that must be the magic item, it was used to detect the use of magic.
I looked once again towards Azure and she was simply smiling as she gathered the tripled amount of ships she bet.
I received double and Willow did too. “Hey miss, may I have one beer please.”, Willow spotted the barmaid in the bunny outfit, however her ears and tails were real as her ears twitched as a reaction to having heard Willow order.
“I’ll have a cup of water.”, I couldn’t bring myself to drink something with alcohol, it’s just something personal.
Only two other players received double their money and two of them didn’t receive anything and lost the placed chips, but they still kept some remains to make sure to be able to stay in game.
“Once again, place your bets!”, the dealer announced and this they repeated the same behavior as before, this time their placement was different but I’m not going too deep into detail.
I placed my chip on the third row, the third row is well… the third row, there are thee rows in total the third one contains the numbers in the third order: like three, six, nine, twelve, fifteen, eighteen, twenty-one and so on.
Willow places his on the black spot and Azure placed… all of her chips including the new ones on the same number as before!?
‘You must have the devils luck if you get that right.’, I was slowly thinking about making bets on her getting it right but I ignored that thought as the dealer placed the ball into the wheel.
Some people started gathering around us, they were probably interested in the small commotion the man caused.
The small silver ball suddenly stopped.
“It’s SEVEN AGAIN!”, the dealer announced with more surprise in her voice, everyone on the table was astonished, the man had the look of despair on his face despite having earned money due to him choosing red.
“Thank you miss.”, Willow thanked the barmaid who had just showed up to the table. “This will be starting to get interesting now…”
‘SHE’S DEFINITELY CHEATING!’, I couldn’t even see her facial expressions anymore due to the mountain of chips. Most of the chips even had the symbol of ten which I was unsure of how much worth it would be.
The whole table was surrounded by people, they were whispering among each other. “The girls amazing!”, the crowd whispered such thoughts among each other. “She must have the devils luck!”, another whispered.
The other players had ‘despair’ written all over their faces, the man who had been complaining about her cheating was dead silent.
They had no idea how she could be cheating, they even brought over seven different magic items to check if she was lying, and that included asking her the truth.
“HAHAHAHAA!”, Willow was lagging whilst gulping down another coop of beer, and I still only had the same coup. I’m used to hours of not being able to drink even on earth and it’s not as if I really need it.
Willow had a small mountain of his own, though it wasn’t of the same magnitude as Azures. In the meanwhile I… had twenty seven chips the worth of ten Zelts.
“Boy, I think we should leave. I think everybody else is spent.”, Willow was right if Azure provoked them any further, then we were bound to get trouble. “Good game, I guess…”
The dealer had hollow eyes, she was probably as surprised as everyone else. “I’ll go get your earnings….”, she trembled with each step.
‘My condolences.’, I genuinely felt bad for them.
She came back with a bag of money, the sound of coins rattling on each other could be heard. The amount in question was in all possible ways absurd.
“W-well done Azure, I’ll make sure I’ll get you something nice.”, in one hand i was grateful, but in the other I wasn’t sure if I should be happy for what she did.
I grabbed the bag of money together with Willows and mine, and left the casino. ‘This game, wasn’t won by chance I’m sure of it’, I left the casino with that thought in mind.
“By the way, how did you always know what it would play? If you tell me it was chance I’m never trusting you again.”, I asked Azure who was whistling my happily.
“I cheated, tee-hee~”, she sticked out her tongue.
Willow was as unsurprised as me. “And how did you do it?”, I asked the imposter herself.
What Azure did to cheat was quite simple, right at the moment we reached the table, she secretory extended a small portion of her slime like body and covered the silver ball that was used to roll on the wheel.
Her slime body is almost like muscles, she can move any part of her body even the substance that’s disconnected from her body.
“You sly dog.”, was the only comment for her, what had hidden itself behind the mask of innocence was either a strategist or the dirtiest of them demons.
“NOOOOO!!! PLEASEEEE!!! CAN I AT THE VERY LEATS HAVE A LITTLE BIT BACK!!!??”, I heard a familiar voice in the distance.
“I apologize, sir it’s the rules if you lost, you lost.”, the barmaid whom the shape of a person was clinging to said, he had adventurer equipment and a short sword I recognized.
“Gray? What are you doing here?”, I asked Gray who had tears running out of his eyes like a fountain.
Gray suddenly clung to me. “SHIRO!! DO YOU BELIEVE THIS, THEY RIPPED ME OFF OF ALL MY MONEY!!!”, her cried into my shirt covering it with snot and tears.
“It’s okay, let daddy Shiro take care of all your problems.”, Gray rose up his head and looked into my eyes. “Really?”
“Hell no.”, I answered and he fell to despair again. “Is it a friend of yours?”, Willow asked, i was quite surprised how sane he was after the jugs of beer he had taken.
“Yeah, I joined his party temporarily.”, I answered.
“Pathetic, isn’t it.”, Laila said appearing out of nowhere. “What are you two doing here?”
“I could ask you the same thing.”, Laila said, she glued him off of me and supported him just like last time. “We’re passing by, there’s going to be a tournament here. So, as the party leader he said he wanted to join the tournament, thus we followed him.”
“But he ended up spending all of his money on gambling, even I’m surprised he’s this stupid.”, Laila commented. “Hey, words can hurt my feelings, you know!”, Gray who was shedding our tears whimpered.
“They were meant to hurt.”, Laila sighed. "What are you doing here? I thought you were maybe staying in 'Ashen'?"
"I have some business here.", I responded, I didn't want to give her too many details. “Anyways, what’s this tournament about?”, I was curious as to what she was referring to. “There’s a tournament happening here, it’s going to start in two days and the prize is a single platinum coin.”
A platinum coin is worth one hundred thousand ‘Zelts’, only nobles could possibly own such a huge amount. “Alright, I need to bring him home now. I’ll see you around, Shiro.”, she once again left.
That night I learned that my trustful friend is a genius at cheating, and valuable information.
Money earned from Casino: Six-thousand-three-hundred Zelts.
